Whoa: Palin Calls Alaska Media "Corrupt Bastards" For Apparent Joe Miller Smear Plot

Very strong language from Mama Grizzly on this morning's Fox News Sunday:

[Palin] accused some in the Alaska media of being "corrupt bastards" who are conspiring to portray Miller negatively. "CBS reporters are on tape saying, 'Let's find a child molester in the crowd that supports Miller," she said, adding that she "can't wait" to air the tape.

Wait no more, Governor.  Here's the tape:

The local CBS affiliate, meanwhile, confirms the tape's authenticity while calling the whole episode an "absurd" misunderstanding:

"While the recording is real, the allegations are untrue," said Bever. "The recording was the result of a cell phone not being hung up after a call was placed to Randy DeSoto, Joe Miller campaign spokesperson, Thursday afternoon to discuss Joe Miller's appearance on that evening's newscast. That phone call was placed near the end of a coverage planning meeting in our newsroom regarding that evening's Miller rally in downtown Anchorage. The group of KTVA news personnel was reviewing potential "what-if" scenarios, discussing the likelihood of events at the rally and how KTVA might logistically disseminate any breaking news."

Bever continues, "The perception that this garbled, out of context recording may leave is unfortunate, but to allege that our staff was discussing or planning to create or fabricate stories regarding candidate Miller is absurd. The complete conversation was about what others might be able to do to cause disruption within the Miller campaign, not what KTVA could do."

Finally, consider this alarming dispatch from ABC News:

A high-level GOP source tells me that party leaders have essentially given up on Republican Senate candidate Joe Miller and are now banking on a victory by write-in candidate Lisa Murkowski as the best bet for Republicans to keep the Alaska Senate seat.

Murkowski defied party leaders by running a write-in campaign after she lost the Republican primary last month.   But with Miller's campaign faltering, the source tells me that Republican leaders are now worried that Democrat Scott McAdams has a shot of winning and that Murkowski may be the only way to stop him.

Hot Air says the NRSC is denying this report.
