Democrats Just Need to Feel Special

Democrats Just Need to Feel Special
PJ Media

Another round of “No Kings” protests kicked off over the weekend, as Democrats across the country rallied against policies of the Trump administration, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations nationwide, and Operation Epic Fury, both of which Democrats have repeatedly characterized as examples of authoritarian overreach.

The irony is striking: Democrats have at times appeared to side with regimes like Iran’s rather than their own country. But this is revealing of a broader Democratic ethos and a central flaw in their social policy: they must feel as though they are walking in the footsteps of Martin Luther King Jr. and other social reformers who genuinely changed the world.

Despite the very real problems facing society, Democrats often seem compelled to view their cause as uniquely important, as if they are the next generation of reformers, bringing the next wave of progress to society.

This is, of course, not the case, but it is interesting to examine key signs of why we know this.

First and foremost, most of the protesters are unable to clearly explain what they are protesting, let alone engage in a productive debate when confronted with opposing views. Instead, what we see is the mindless regurgitation of talking points, a refusal to engage with dissenting opinions, and an unwavering determination to march for a cause they scarcely understand.

Not only do many protesters lack a clear understanding of what they are advocating, but they also sometimes resort to random, and at times downright dangerous, displays to make their “point,” whatever that may be.

For example, even though the Trump administration has not made abortion a central focus of his second administration, some protesters were seen marching dressed as characters from The Handmaid’s Tale, a story meant to illustrate a dystopia in which women lose access to reproductive freedom and are reduced solely to their reproductive roles.

In other scenes, protesters can be seen waving communist flags, as well as the flags of terrorist groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and even the Iranian regime.

Why? Because, unlike the great reformers of the past, the left does not have a single issue they care deeply about, or even a single cause they genuinely seek to advance. They protest for the sake of protesting, for the sake of opposing Trump, and for the satisfaction of believing they are the next generation of freedom fighters. And they show little concern for keeping their own people in line.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s nephew, Isaac Newton Farris Jr., put the point perfectly, explaining that at Dr. King’s protests, marshals were assigned to keep both the participants and their cause in order. The organizers also made sure that any misconduct was treated as the responsibility of the individual, not the protest as a whole, a practice largely absent in today’s Democratic-led demonstrations.

Whatever your opinion of Dr. King, the effectiveness of his protests and the skill with which they were organized cannot be disputed. His cause was also far more precise than the causes championed by today’s liberals.

Rather than showing genuine concern, Democrats today prioritize performance above all else. They are less interested in advancing real causes than in opposing the president and convincing themselves that they are leading the next great political movement. It is about them, not the political landscape.

In doing so, Democrats have turned the First Amendment’s right to protest into a spectacle, ensuring that demonstrations become exercises in theater rather than vehicles for meaningful political reform.
