The RNC's Scathing Response to Comey's Interview

Former FBI Director James Comey's ABC interview was full of inaccuracies, according to the Republican National Committee. Following in the footsteps of the White House, who berated Comey for his obsession with media attention, the RNC said that Comey is just trying to sell copies of his new books, "A Higher Loyalty."

“James Comey’s publicity tour reaffirms that his true higher loyalty is to himself," said RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel. "The only thing worse than Comey’s history of misconduct is his willingness to say anything to sell books. He has no credibility and President Trump was right to follow through on the bipartisan calls for him to be fired.”

In the same press release, The RNC debunked several points Comey made in his ABC interview. For instance, Comey told George Stephanopoulos that Trump told him to drop the investigation against former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The RNC offered “The Facts.”

"Even according to Comey’s sworn testimony we know this is a lie. In May 2017, Comey testified that he had never been asked to halt an investigation for political reasons.  And in June 2017, Comey admitted when pressed that neither President Trump nor his staff asked him to stop the Russia investigation."

The committee also called Comey's bluff when he suggested he handled the Clinton investigation properly.

"Comey broke longstanding FBI and DOJ protocol several times by publicly acknowledging the existence of ongoing FBI investigations," the RNC responded.

He acted with political inclinations, the committee noted, echoing White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. In October 2016, for instance, he publicly announced an investigation into new Clinton emails just 11 days before the presidential election, despite having these “new emails” for at least three weeks. He apparently thought Clinton would win and he wanted to give himself some cover.

White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway weighed in on Comey's ABC hit Monday and she too likened it to a stop on his book tour.
