North Korea Detains Another U.S. Citizen

North Korea has detained another American citizen for "acts of hostility" against the country. The American, Kim Hak Song, was an employee at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. Evangelical Christians founded the school in 2010.

Song is the fourth U.S. citizen currently being held in North Korea. The BBC has provided information on the other three prisoners, one of whom worked at the same university as Song.

  • Kim Sang-duck, a lecturer who taught at PUST and was detained in April for allegedly attempting to "overturn" the government. South Korean media said he was 55 and had been involved in humanitarian work in the North
  • Kim Dong-chul, 62, who was sentenced to 10 years' hard labour for spying last year.
  • Student Otto Warmbier, 22, who was sentenced to 15 years' hard labour for trying to steal a propaganda sign from a hotel

The relationship between North Korea and the U.S. is extremely strained right now as the former continues to test ballistic missiles. During his trip through the Asia-Pacific region last month, Vice President Mike Pence said the era of "strategic patience" is over and all options are on the table regarding North Korea's aggression.
