A judge in San Francisco has ruled against a Trump administration policy which would defund localities that call themselves sanctuary cities - cities that harbor illegal immigrants and fail to cooperate with federal authorities.

In the decision, the judge concluded that Trump does not have the authority to determine federal funding based on his immigration policy.

In March, Attorney General Jeff Sessions made a surprise appearance at a White House press briefing to warn sanctuary cities that if they continue to skirt the law, they would be punished financially.
