After Criticism of Immigration Order, Trudeau to Meet With Trump at White House

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Trump are polar opposites, leaving many to wonder how awkward their Monday meeting will be when Trudeau comes to visit the White House.

A few recent occurrences underline the tension that is sure to be in the Oval Office upon Trudeau's arrival. A day after Trump signed an executive order barring immigrants from seven countries deemed too dangerous, Trudeau welcomed them open arms.

The Canadian prime minister offered a counterpunch to another of Trump's recent policies. Trump, who calls himself a pro-life president, recently reinforced the Mexico City Policy that prohibits U.S. foreign aid from being used to fund overseas abortions. Trudeau's government, meanwhile, is hoping to award $600 million to International Planned Parenthood Federation.

Despite the leaders' obvious differences, Trudeau's team stated on Thursday that their meeting will focus on relationship building.

“They look forward to discussing ?the unique relationship between Canada and the United States of America and how we can continue to work hard for middle class Canadians and Americans, together,” Kate Purchase, Trudeau’s director of communications, said in a statement, according to the Star.

Since his victory in November, it is worth noting that Trump has demonstrated his willingness to give an ear to staunch opponents of him and his policies.
