Kerry Considered Entering the 2016 Race...But Won't Say When

John Kerry had a brief moment where he considered jumping into the presidential race last year, he told The Boston Globe this week as he prepares to complete his career in Washington.

“For a minute or two, maybe somewhere along the line, it crossed my mind — possibly,” he told The Globe. “But there are a number of reasons why I dismissed the idea. And I’m glad. I think it was right. I never really thought that seriously about it.”

When the editors pressed him on when he had these White House ambitions, Kerry refused to indulge, simply noting that he considered it when the campaign issues became too "complicated." He quickly suppressed the fleeting desire because he “loves” his job at State and wanted to finish it.

The secretary of state’s interview with The Boston Globe also made headlines because he appeared to praise President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary, Gen. James Mattis, and his State Department successor, Rex Tillerson. The editors noted that Kerry called Trump’s choices “thoughtful.”

Kerry plans to return home to Boston and work in the private sector once Trump assumes the presidency.
