Desperate and Dirty

Howard Kurtz, now of the Daily Beast, write about the heavy spending of the Democrats and their party apparatus on "ugly stuff" -- that is, highly incendiary personal attacks on their Republican opponents.

Obviously, it's a tactic borne of profound desperation, especially when Democrats resort to it.  After all, they're the ones who want all of us to trust government more, even as they tar many of those running (who ultimately will win) as untrustworthy sleazebags.  Ironic, no?  And damaging in the long term to everything Dems hold dear.

What's more, it's a tacit admission that independents are no longer receptive to any policy-based messages Democrats could peddle.  Everybody knows that independents are particularly repulsed by ugly personal attacks; by employing them, Democrats realize they'll win over precious few independent votes.  Obviously, they've concluded that their only hope of converting a potential electoral cataclysm into a mere disaster is by goosing their liberal base and frightening them all the way to the polls.

So much for all the "hope and change."
