Soros-Backed Trojan Horse: Nicușor Dan Would Undermine U.S.-Romania Relations and Empower Putin’s Agenda

As Romania edges closer to its next presidential election, a storm is brewing—and at the eye is Nicușor Dan, the current mayor of Bucharest and a declared candidate for the presidency. While he markets himself as a clean-cut reformer, the evidence tells a far more troubling story. A Nicușor Dan presidency would be nothing short of a disaster—not only for the Romanian people but for the country’s strategic alliance with the United States and the broader fight against authoritarianism in Eastern Europe.

This is not just about local politics or ideological squabbles. This concerns the West’s weakening grip on a region teetering between democracy and Russian influence. And Nicușor Dan, whether by design or delusion, is poised to hand Vladimir Putin a win without firing a shot.

A Puppet for Soros? Follow the Money

Despite his repeated public denials, Nicușor Dan has been exposed as having received financial backing from George Soros, the billionaire globalist whose Open Society Foundation has spent decades meddling in national politics across the globe.

Let’s look at the facts:

  • In 2008, Dan’s “Association for Urban Development” received a $19,950 grant from Soros’s Open Society Foundation under the “East East Partnership Beyond Borders” program.
  • In 2016, Dan admitted to receiving funds from Soros in an interview with HotNews.ro: “Yes, we received money from Soros, just as from many other sources.”
  • Yet, in a 2024 appearance on Romania’s Antena 3, Dan blatantly lied, claiming he never took Soros’s money despite public documentation.

This level of dishonesty and manipulation is disturbing on its own. But more troubling is what it represents: a politician willing to obscure foreign funding ties to maintain a false image of independence. That’s not transparency. That’s a Trojan horse.

The Putin Factor: A Dangerous Global Signal

In a bombshell Politico Europe report, Dan was described as signaling openness to closer ties with Donald Trump—and, by extension, the U.S.—while simultaneously advocating for a “balanced” approach to Vladimir Putin and Russia. Let’s be clear: There is no “balanced” approach when it comes to a tyrant who’s invaded Ukraine, murdered opposition leaders, and seeks to destabilize NATO.

Allowing a Soros-funded politician with documented dishonesty and a questionable stance on Putin to take power in a NATO member state is a geopolitical gamble with severe consequences.

A Dan presidency would:

  • Erode Romania’s pro-Western posture just as Eastern Europe needs unity against Russian aggression.
  • Undermine intelligence-sharing and military coordination with the U.S.
  • Embolden European populists and global actors pushing for “neutrality” in the face of tyranny.

A Liability for U.S.-Romania Relations

At a time when the U.S. is trying to reinforce Eastern European alliances, electing a man who lies on national television about Soros’s funding and waffles on Russia would be a disaster. Romania is a trusted American ally and a linchpin in NATO’s eastern flank. That trust would evaporate if Dan, a man compromised by ideology and association, assumed the presidency.

How can U.S. leaders trust a man who misrepresents his financial backers, downplays the threat of Russian expansionism and prioritizes image over integrity?

Final Thoughts: Romania Deserves Better

Romanians have faced enough instability and deception. They deserve a leader who tells the truth, defends national sovereignty, and stands firmly with the West. Nicușor Dan has proven he is none of those things.

This is not about right or left. It’s about truth or deception. Freedom or manipulation. Strength or surrender.

A vote for Nicușor Dan is for George Soros’ agenda, Vladimir Putin’s geopolitical ambitions, and the weakening of one of America’s last reliable allies in Eastern Europe.

America should take note. And Romania must choose wisely.
