The Democrat Convention: As Pagan As They Wanna Be

Anybody slightly to the right politically of Arlen Specter has been struggling to define the freak show that was the just concluded Democrat Party Convention in Charlotte.

Terms du jour such as liberal, leftist, Marxist, or even statist don’t seem to fully encapsulate exactly what was on display this week. There’s a reason for that. That terminology is the result of the worldview that has now been fully embraced by the leadership of the Democrat Party, as well as many of its delegates. But that terminology itself doesn’t explain why we saw what we saw.

The word we’re looking for here is pagan.

Dictionary.com defines “pagan” as: “A person who is not a Christian, Jew, or Muslim (the world’s dominant monotheistic religions). An irreligious or hedonistic person…a person deemed morally or spiritually stunted.” Synonyms for “pagan” include the following: heathen, hedonistic, idolater, profane, sacrilegious, atheistic, and unholy.

Yep, I would say that pretty much sums it up.

This was a convention whose most popular speaker was impeached—not to mention is a proven liar and serial philanderer who turned the word “humidor” into a verb with a White House intern. This was a convention that proudly applauded a Ted Kennedy tribute video lauding a series of Obama “achievements” that were either all unbiblical, unconstitutional, or both. This was a convention that literally booed God.

For the last few years I have said that we’ve reached the point with the Democrat Party where it now primarily exists as a means to promote child killing and homosexuality, and all other traditional Democrat Party issues and constituencies take a backseat to those two. Convention viewers this week sadly saw me proven correct. Child sacrifice in particular was so prevalent and celebrated at this convention, that if it had a theme song it would be Metallica’s “Kill ‘em all.” All that was missing was an altar to Chemosh in downtown Charlotte.

I do not write these words with a partisan spirit, and I’ve certainly written enough columns in the past to indicate how little regard and respect I have for the Republican Party establishment. If anything, I actually trust the leadership of the GOP less than the Democrats. At least the Democrats are now openly shaking their fists at God, rather than co-opting a bunch of “God-talk” for bumper stickers and talking points, only to grow government and not defend marriage and the unborn as the Republican Party establishment routinely does. I will at least damn the Democrats with faint praise for their pagan sincerity. Their conscience knows God disagrees with them, which is why some of their delegates were booing Him.

Rather, I write these words with a heavy heart for both my neighbor and my country. As a Christian I am commanded to love God and to love others. As a patriot I am convicted to love this country because of the eternal principles it has stood for that are enshrined in its Constitution. If at least half of the civically-minded portion of our population finds itself comfortable and at-ease with the hedonism on display at the Democrat Convention, then the future is very much in peril for both our neighbors and our Constitution.

No civilization that has followed the dead end the Democrat Convention was urging us to take has lasted long. It is simple common sense that if you punish those who produce and reward those that don’t, you’ll have fewer producers and thus diminished prosperity. It is simple common sense that if you continue to extinguish 4,000 of your own children per day, you’ll eventually be out-numbered by your enemy that continues to breed.

But when it comes to a worldview, common sense isn’t so simple.

Once someone, or a people, willfully intends on spiritual disobedience there is almost no turning back without the grace of God alone. As St. Paul put it in his letter to the Christians living in pagan Rome during his day:

For although they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools…Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie…For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice…Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

To sum up Paul’s words: as pagan as they wanna be = as nasty as they wanna be.

This explains why some of you who watched this spectacle reacted with a combination of disgust, bewilderment, and fear for the future. Spiritually you understand what is happening here, and you know this is so much bigger than just an election or what the unemployment rate will be a year from now. This is even so much bigger than the future of these United States of America.

What we’re really talking about here is the eternal fate of the souls of those cheering on such debauchery, just as the pagans in ancient Rome cheered on the brutality and gory viciousness of man’s inhumanity to man in the Coliseum.

What’s happening to the Democrat Party won’t lead to the end of freedom and liberty in America, but rather is the result of freedom and liberty ending in America. Contrary to what the emerging generation of Ayn Rand disciples would have us believe, we cannot have freedom without the One who makes us free indeed. The moral foundation built by the Church of Jesus Christ at America’s founding is what made America possible in the first place, and it’s no coincidence that as the Christian Church declines in influence as an institution in America, that freedom and liberty in America declines as well. Freedom doesn’t happen in a vacuum, or simply by enacting Austrian economics (much of which I agree with by the way), and neither does the rule of law or limited government spontaneously combust.

Rather, they are the signs of a healthy civilization that understands its proper place in the grand scheme of things, and who it is ultimately accountable to for its actions.

Finally, now that the Democrat Party has charted a pagan path it won’t deviate from – barring a providential act from the God it’s barring from its proceedings – it will get even harder for conservatives in the Republican Party (especially Christian ones).

That's because human nature always takes the path of least resistance unless forced to do otherwise, and if the Republican Party can get away with just not being quite as pagan and leftist as the Democrats it will. We’ve already seen this. It’s called the George W. Bush presidency.

Instead of the complete statist control over education the pagan left wants, we get “No Child Left Behind.” Instead of the national healthcare mandate the pagan left wants, we get a prescription drug mandate. Instead of the anti-Constitutional justices like Ruth Bader Ginsburg the pagan left wants, we get John “Obamacare” Roberts.

The more obvious it becomes the Republicans have no apparent competition for patriots who vote, the less the GOP will try to do to for those voters. The only way to prevent this is to see even more carnage in Republican primaries like we’ve seen in 2010 and 2012.
