Do We Want Nikki Haley As Trump’s VP?

In this column, I want to discuss Mr. Trump’s Vice-President—assuming his nomination. VP candidates are already being bandied about. Who will he select as his running mate? I have no clue, not really having given it much consideration yet. My first thought is for a strong conservative from a big swing state (if such a person exists). But there are some good candidates available all around the country.

However, talk is afloat that Trump might select Nikki Haley, and some have even suggested it would be a good move. It might draw in some RINOs, it might get Trump some financial support from those who back Haley, she might be the best candidate to help Trump win the Presidency. Maybe.

I have some grievous angst about this, but I do not want Nikki Haley as Mr. Trump’s running mate. An absolute NO!

But it is a serious dilemma.

We have a hideous enemy in America—the Leftist Democratic Party. White, brown, yellow, black, the color doesn’t matter. Leftists are all cut from the same stripe. Their leaders don’t—won’t—act honorably. Around the world, they have been utterly ruthless, without honor, decency, or righteousness, a cold people who have absolutely no conscience whatsoever. Whatever it takes to gain and hold power is what they will do, regardless of how many people are destroyed in the process. That is what the Left has proven over the last 100 years, even in America. The country will not survive these people, and they will eventually kill and mutilate millions more than they already have.

So, I understand totally that, for America’s and the world’s sake, we need to win in November. But what will the price of victory be? Do we lower ourselves to the Left’s level in order to win? We may have to, but are we the kind of people who can do that?

I’m sorry, but I’m just not the sort of person who is prepared to sacrifice principle in the name of victory. Some people are willing to do that, and if you feel that way, that is your choice. I don’t. I agree with Edmund Burke: “If I cannot have reform without injustice, I will not have reform.” There are nobler virtues than victory.

If we sacrifice our principles to win, we might as well not win, and go ahead and hand the country over to the Left. There are many, many people in America—too many—who have no decent, godly, honorable principles; they are called “Democrats.” If we surrender our principles, we become no better than they are. Which principles will we sacrifice next? And for what cause?

I find this to be an extremely excruciating conundrum. We need to win in November. But Nikki Haley is anathema to me, and most conservatives. But if Haley can put Trump over the top, do we abandon principles for victory? Again, I refuse, even to save America. An America that would do that isn’t worth saving. I would rather lose and hold on to my virtue than win and dishonor myself and my God. We have no good country without honor.

Nikki Haley is the wrong choice for Vice-President. Eventually, doing the wrong, errant thing comes back to haunt you. Maybe not immediately, and there might even be some circumstantial gain. But ultimately, you lose. “Be not deceived, God is not mocked. Whatever a man sows, that shall he also reap.” Sow Haley, in due course reap a whirlwind. And huge mistakes take longer to correct.

If Haley is the Vice-President, she will be one heartbeat away from the Presidency. Honor doesn’t do that to the American people; Democrats do, but we don’t—or shouldn’t. It’s not right. We would live in fear, for four years, that Donald Trump will drop dead. And he will be 78-years-old by November. The Democrats have kept Biden alive for four years; perhaps Republicans can keep Trump alive for that long. But the risk is great, especially given what that man eats. Since there are other good people available who could serve well, and faithfully step into Mr. Trump’s shoes if the worst did happen, there is no good reason to select Nikki Haley as his running mate. Putting someone like Haley that close to the Presidency is an insult to the American people. Again, Democrats don’t care what they offer America if they can obtain power. Must we now mimic them? As President, Haley would be only marginally better than Joe Biden. Do we wish to risk returning the country to the Republican Party of Bush-McCain-Romney?

We need a Vice-President who will do the right thing if he/she becomes President. Someone who will follow in Mr. Trump’s steps and continue whatever good policies he pursues. Someone who won’t throw away all he—and we—are trying to accomplish. How can we think of jeopardizing all that by having Haley as VP?

Plus, if Trump did survive for his four years, Haley would become the frontrunner for the nomination in 2028. So, we get Trump now, and then have Haley undo it all after 2028? Can you say “Reagan-Bush”?  The biggest mistake Ronald Reagan made was selecting George Bush as his VP. Have we learned NOTHING from history?

Donald Trump, Jr. said he did not want his father to select Nikki Haley as his running mate. Don, Sr., recently called Haley a “globalist” who is “funded by Biden donors.” Hopefully, that’s a good sign that Don, Sr., isn’t considering Haley for VP. But Trump criticizes everybody, so who knows what he is thinking.

Do we play by the Left’s rules? Do we lower ourselves to their standards in order to win, in order to save the country from them? Do we sacrifice our principles and agree to Nikki Haley as VP if she will help Trump win? What a dilemma.

Please, Mr. Trump. Someone else. Please.
