Bible Passage: Matthew 2:1-11, 2 Corinthians 11:3-4, Colossians 1:15-20, Hebrews 9:27-28

Discussion Question:

What does Jesus' birth have to do with my treasure?

How would Jesus describe the gifts you present to Him? Would they be considered "treasures" or simply "leftovers?"

Food for Thought:

Parents of small children know that the task of crafting a toy wish list usually begins months prior to Christmas. Autumn is practically overlooked by larger retail outlets since the Christmas decorations come out of storage once the back-to-school items are put away. There are many who overlook the meaning behind the Christmas story and put their treasure in the gifts beneath the tree. Mature Christians, however, realize that storing up earthly treasure means nothing in light of what awaits us in eternity. Moreover, God expects that we give Him everything we have: our time, our resources, our talents … everything. It's not enough to show up a few Sundays a year. It's not enough to put a few meager bills in the collection plate if we're able to do more. It's not enough to dig a hole and throw our talents in for safekeeping when we can share them with others. Give Him everything. After all, through His birth, life, death and resurrection He did much more for us than any of us deserve.
