N.Y. GOP to allow 'gay marriage' vote

ALBANY, N.Y. (BP)--Republicans in the New York state Senate decided late Friday to allow a vote on a "gay marriage" bill, according to multiple reports.

The vote could take place late Friday and would include religious exemption language that many social conservatives says falls short of what is needed to protect religious liberty.

For instance, the language would not prevent discussion of "gay marriage" in elementary schools -- a primary conservative concern.

Republicans control the chamber, 32-30. Only two GOP senators publicly support the bill, which as of late Friday remained one vote shy of the support needed to pass. But there were at least two uncommitted Republicans senators. The bill already has passed the Senate, and the governor has promised to sign it.
