Cannon Loses to Immigration Hawk

Republican Rep. Chris Cannon (Utah) overwhelmingly lost his primary race to border enforcement advocate Jason Chaffetz.

Chaffetz, a former chief of staff to Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, beat Cannon by more than twenty points.

Bay Buchanan, chairman of the Team America PAC sent, out a glowing email to PAC supporters to praise his Chaffetz’s win. “Friends, Jason ran a great campaign on out of control spending, immigration, and $4 gas,” she wrote. “Bottom line: he pounded Cannon on abandoning conservative principles and for abandoning America in the battle against illegal immigration, and he won in one of the most Republican districts in America.”

The Team America PAC was founded by border hawk Rep. Tom Tancredo (R.-Colo.). Their website featured a prominent photo of Cannon Wednesday with the headline “Adios Amigo!”

Cannon is the third sitting congressman to lose his seat in a primary this election cycle. His loss follows two others in Maryland by Republican Rep. Wayne Gilchrest and Democratic Rep. Albert Wynn.
