A case involving an El Salvadorian ex-gang member has set the precedent for MS13 gang members to permanently stay in the United States. Now, because of the court ruling, foreign gang members may apply to stay in the United States out of the fear that, if deported, they could be harmed. These "credible fear" asylum applications have increased from 5,000 to 36,000 in the last five years.
