'The Pro-Life Movement Is Led by Strong Women:' President Trump Makes History By Addressing March for Life

Friday marked the 47th annual March for Life, the largest annual gathering in support of human rights worldwide. The yearly march is a peaceful protest against abortion, on or around the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s ruling on Roe v. Wade. The march’s attendance is overwhelmingly encompassed by Republicans every year, but no GOP president had ever addressed the march’s attendees directly, until this year. President Trump made history, and set a new standard for Republican presidents, by addressing the March for Life directly, in-person:

President Trump has been a staunch ally of the pro-life movement, and has brought pro-life values back to the forefront of the Republican agenda, as he promised during his bid for the White House. President Trump renewed the Mexico City Policy, defunded Planned Parenthood via Title X funds and protected taxpayers from having their earnings used to fund abortion. President Trump reaffirmed his unwavering support for pro-life values in front of the energetic crowd of pro-life Americans:

“We are here for a very simple reason, to defend the right of every child, born and unborn, to fulfill their God-given potential," Trump said.

President Trump also told the truth that is often lost in the hyper-partisan politics surrounding abortion: the pro-life movement is dominated by women who value the sanctity of human life:

"The pro-life movement is led by strong women," the president said.

Trump also condemned the radical abortion policies embraced by mainstream Democrats. The president named the Governor of Virginia, Ralph Northam, who infamously advocated for not only late-term, but post-birth abortions. Mediaite attempted to pounce on the president's claim:

The quote in question from Governor Northam indicated that mainstream Democrats have abandoned the traditional pro-choice ideology:

 “The infant would be delivered, the infant would be kept comfortable, the infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother,” Gov. Northam said.

Northam is not alone in his radical views on abortion; Democrats no longer view abortion as a solemn choice, but rather a procedure worthy of celebration. President Trump is correct to condemn these views.

President Trump made history by addressing the March for Life in person as the leader of the free world. President Trump's move of solidarity not only broke precedent, but also set a new standard for Republican presidents to come; support for the fierce advocates present at the March for Life from GOP presidents is long-overdue. Past Republican presidents have identified as pro-life ideologically, but no president has taken as much tangible, decisive action on abortion as President Trump has. Republicans should be proud that President Trump stands up for the unborn, those who cannot stand up for themselves, not only in verbiage, but in policy.
