Former President Bill Clinton offered President Trump some advice on how to handle the current impeachment inquiry.
While he was discussing gun control with CNN after Thursday’s school shooting, Clinton also said President Trump shouldn’t use the impeachment inquiry as an “excuse” to not “go to work for the American people.”
“Look at how much we got done in 1998 to 1999. And even in ’97. We had very productive actions in all three years,” Clinton said, referencing the time during which impeachment affected his presidency.
"We had very productive actions in all three years," Clinton said. "Once the public rendered judgment on what they thought should be done I kept working with [the Republican Congress]."
When CNN’s Jake Tapper asked him if he had advice for the president given his own experience, Clinton said Trump should continue focusing on working for the American people.
"What would your message to President Trump be? What would your message to President Trump be about when he says 'I can't work with these people. They're impeaching me'?" Tapper said.
“My message was, would be, look, you got hired to do a job,” Clinton responded. “You don't get the days back once they're lost -- every day's an opportunity to make something good happen. And I would say I've got lawyers and staff people handling the impeachment inquiry and they should just have at it, meanwhile, I'm going to work for the American people. That's when I would do.”
Clinton was impeached on December 19, 1998 for perjury and obstruction of justice. Five weeks later, the Senate acquitted him.
