At NRA Convention, Sheriff Explains What Words He’d Add to Second Amendment

Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. gave a powerful speech at the NRA convention Wednesday, receiving a standing ovation when he told the crowd the seven words he’d add to the Second Amendment if he could: “Keep your hands off our guns, dammit.”

The Blaze has the details:

His comments about amending the Constitution were aimed at former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, who said in his recent book that he would change the Second Amendment by adding five words in the middle: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms when serving in the militia shall not be infringed.”

“My reaction was, ‘What!’” Clarke said, adding, ”Just what part of ‘shall not be infringed’ does Justice Stevens not understand?”

Clarke made a name for himself in the gun rights community last year when he put out personal defense radio ads urging citizens to consider taking a firearms safety course because “simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option.” He’s since been a vocal proponent of gun rights for law-abiding citizens.

“Firearms in the hands of law-abiding citizens saved people’s lives,” he said at the convention.

“We’re partners now. Are you ready?”
