Breaking Bad in Albuquerque: Ending Late Term Abortions, One City Election at a Time

There are four late-term abortionists remaining in the United States, and half of them practice their gruesome profession in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico.

It’s there where boyfriends and parents often drag young women, half-way across the country, to end of the life of their child. On any given day, you can see the out-of-state license plates that fill the parking lot and perfectly detailed rental cars that have just come from the airport.

Because New Mexico is one of the few states left that allows abortion-on-demand up until the moment of birth, it’s there where abortionist Curtis Boyd and his cronies kill viable babies (babies that if born down the street at the University of New Mexico’s hospital would be given every chance to live). They use the infamous MOLD technique (Misoprostol, Oxytocin, Laminaria, and Digoxin), which injects a lethal dosage of digoxin into the baby’s heart and then leaves the mother 3 to 4 days to carry her dead child inside of her until her body is ready for labor. And if she gives birth before making it back to the abortion facility? The "doctors" tell her to just sit on the toilet, call them, and not to look down.

How does that even come close to what our feminist fore-mothers imagined when they sought equality? Sitting on a toilet, alone in a hotel room, too afraid to look down at the dead, fully developed baby that has just come out of you.

For years, Albuquerque residents have been painfully oblivious to what has been happening inside of Southwestern Women’s Options as they passed by on their way to work. However, the majority of them, like most Americans, vehemently oppose the brutal practice of late-term abortion.

This Tuesday, November 19th, Albuquerque residents will take a historic vote to ban late-term abortions in their city via a 20-week abortion ban called the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Ordinance. This is the first vote like in the nation, where grassroots activists have decided not to wait on the government and complain about the wishy-washy Republicans, who are too afraid of the word “abortion.” Instead, they are doing it on their own.

The other side has called in the money and messaging reinforcements, knowing this is going to be an uphill battle - defending, the indefensible - abortions on babies who can feel pain and who can survive outside of their mothers’ womb.

President Obama’s Organizing for Action has pitched in, Rachel Maddow is already setting up the conspiracy theories, and Stop Patriarchy (the anarchist group that has called for violence on pro-lifers) is preparing their bus tour.

In the last year, America has seen similar late-term abortion bans greeted with great success in states like Arkansas and Texas, and they know this is another battle they can’t afford to lose.

As we did in Austin, Texas this summer - Students for Life volunteers from New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, and Colorado will be driving and flying into Albuquerque this weekend, ready to do the hard work needed to make Tuesday’s vote a success. We’ve got the pro-life generation on our side, and we know, ultimately, it will be they who will change our culture and nation, no matter how much money the other side has in it’s coffers.
