White House Spin on the DREAM Act

Even a strong immigration restrictionist like Mark Krikorian says if he served in Congress he would probably be amenable to a Dream Act type program- but one that doesn't have the fatal errors of the versions Harry Reid is currently peddling. I believe it was in NRO you can find the column.

Some of the flaws:

1). Lack of provisions to prevent fraud. (millions are likely to be granted legal status even though not meeting the criteria) My thought is this could be corrected by providing Congress the right to review and reject applications they determine to be fraudulent. You can bet the new immigration czar, Steve King, will see to it that nobody gets away with fraud.

2). Is supposed to be for those who "grew up" in the US, but...

The key is: This program would be corrupt in a myriad of ways because that is precisely the kind of program the sponsors want.

I think it would show some guts if the Republicans actually produced a CLEAN Dream Act type program. I guarantee you the left wingers would be running for the hills, since what they want is immigration anarchy, not an orderly immigration system.

"Anchor Babies" is a misinterpretation of our Constitution. Amnesty is wrong. These idiots have ":broken our laws".... Do we reward US criminals who have broken our laws?? No, they go to jail. And if they are felons, they lose rights. Our laws are not meant to be discriminate & should be applied equally. I see no other reason for obama to push this besides broadening his voter base. OK, Richard's likely correct. Not that new amnestied illegals will have a vote. But many if not all Hispanics/Mexican-Americans who DO are going to vote for him. What did we expect?

All a granting of amnesty to illegal aliens by an Executive Order issued by Obama would do is to end law-enforcement efforts to deport them - and the plain and simple fact is, we ALREADY have de facto amnesty for illegal aliens under Obama by virtue of the fact that Obama refuses to police our southern border and by the sanctuary-city policies you referred to earlier. These 'dream act' receipents are just grown up anchor babies. Once the democrats legalize the children, the parents get legalized by default. Therefore we get aamnesty through the 'back door'.

Claiming it doesn't make sense to round up 10 million people and deport them is just an lame excuse for not doing their jobs. If the gooberment were to announce they were going to begin deporting law breaking aliens, law breaking aliens would pack up and head home. I would bet thousands of illegals interact with law enforcement every year. Every one of those interactions is an opportunity to send them home. Self-deportation should be the goal, not encouraging and allowing illegal aliens to break our laws. The gooberment fools who enable alien law breakers have lost sight of common decency and ethics. I'd be very surprised if the DREAM Act passes the Senate in a lame-duck session of Congress, because the Democrats have about two dozen Senate seats up for re-election in 2012, and many of them are red-state Senators - Ben Nelson in Nebraska, Mary Landrieu in Louisiana, Byron Dorgan in Montana, Jon Tester in North Dakota, Jim Webb in Virginia, Claire McCaskill in my own state of Missouri, and several more - who after seeing the election results on November 2 know that a vote for amnesty and other far-left wish-list items is in all likelihood a vote to end their political careers in 2012.

My belief is that these red-state Democrats aren't going to let Harry Reid do to THEM what Nancy Pelosi did to the moderate House...

We aren't even positive about how many out of right of center oppose amnesty, Standshiground. There is no trustworthy amnesty consensus. I say this not because of my own support. Here in this open forum the majority's opposed; but that's only here.

If you don't round up 10 million people who came into OUR country ILLEGALLY, but you allow them to stay and get jobs, get free healthcare, free schooling for their children, free lunches at school, begin drawing welfare on 'fake' documents, then you are awarding AMNESTY, and We,The People will not sit by quietly when and IF you do. We need to enforce the laws that are already on record and stop the flow of illegals across OUR borders. Why bother to round them up. Just enforce the laws already on the books and hopefully they will go home. If they can't get job, send their kids to school, collect welfare or go to the hospital without fear of deportation, they will probably just leave the same way they came in. There can be no amnesty until the southern border is secure. As a country we can no longer afford illegal immigration and all the woes that come with it.

BINGO. Many of them will self-deport (would that be called an "amnesty saved"?) as the pressure mounts to identify them or their employers. I think Arizona is already experiencing this phenomenon. The fact remains, though, that the border fence must be completed and the necessary forces and technology on the ground - or in the air - needs to be deployed.
