A Magic Pen And An Empty Suit

President Obama is a genius, or so we are told. We have nothing on which to base that except the word of people who would find a way to praise him if he held a press conference while throwing live puppies into a wood chipper. So forgive me if I don’t swallow the hook on that line.

The one positive thing I can say about the president’s amnesty speech on Thursday is that I didn’t lose any respect for him afterwards. That is because me losing respect for Barack Obama is a mathematical impossibility at this point.

The speech had as much substance as the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. An empty man in an empty hall spoke empty words to a nation that no longer believes him. Only rank partisans, drooling drones, and the progressive media revere Barack Obama anymore. We are watching the tumbling of an empty suit in a dryer.

With all the sincerity of the leader of a banana republic acting unilaterally in his country’s “best interest,” GeneralissimObama decreed what isn’t to now be. On a temporary basis, the man who sees himself as king waived his magic pen over the illegal masses and granted them the ability to compete with millions of unemployed Americans for very few jobs.

The president didn’t concern himself with the millions he’s failed economically; he appealed to hearts, not heads. After six years of not acting—five of which he didn’t even try—the time to “act” was “now!” The leader of the party that routinely cries “democracy” looked at the results of an election in which his policies were on the ballot, every one of them, and acted deliberately in contrast to the will of the people.

The speech Obama’s staff constructed for him was read passionately, the way Robert De Niro might pretend to be a doctor convincingly. But just like you wouldn’t call Bobby when you’re having a heart attack, you don’t look to Barack Obama when you need leadership. Voters showed they understood this Nov. 4.

Loaded with sob stories, the speech and the spin after attempted to make our feelings overwhelm our brains. Unfortunately for Obama and the Democrats, tales of families being “ripped apart” because their child was born here while they are illegal are meaningless. If they love their kid they wouldn’t leave them behind. There isn’t enough money in the world to make me care about the “plight” of Astrid Silva, the human prop he used in his speech. She’s in the country illegally, not “through no fault of her own,” but because of the direct fault of her parents.

If, as the president said, “Astrid Silva is a college student working on her third degree,” she should have a good case for being allowed into the country legally, once she goes home and gets in line. Unless, of course, her degrees are in unmarketable areas like ethnic and gender studies. Either way, I couldn’t care less. This isn’t about sad tales of woe; this is about national sovereignty and the law.

The barking seal human props Obama spoke in front of Friday in Las Vegas were carefully screened to put the best face on this power grab. But the masses who stream across our border and overwhelm our hospitals, schools and social services don’t face that same screening. They, in fact, haven’t faced any screening at all. The “honor system” background check the president used his magic pen to create this week won’t change that.

No matter how magic the president thinks his pen is, it can’t make his lawlessness lawful; it can’t bring back California police officers Michael Davis and Danny Oliver, both murdered by an illegal alien who’d been deported at least four times; and it can’t distract from the fact that those men are only two of thousands murdered by monsters and drunks who have no business being in the greatest country to ever exist on the planet.

And sorry Obama, quoting Scripture doesn’t help your case when your administration is currently in a lawsuit against “The Little Sisters Of The Poor” in an attempt to force the sisters, and all religious organizations, to violate their deeply held religious beliefs. The man who spent 20 years’ worth of Sundays cheering Rev. Wright doesn’t have the moral authority to invoke Scripture.

The era of Barack Obama is over. All he can do is waive his magic pen around and sign executive orders. But the thing about executive orders is they can be undone by executive order. We will spend decades digging out from under the crushing failure of these eight years, but we will unbury ourselves. Once this disgrace leaves the Oval Office we’ll have to give it a Silkwood shower, but we will recover.
