Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Like the beat beat beat of the tom-tom, like the tick tick tock of the clock, like the drip drip drip of the raindrops, a voice within me keeps repeating, Obama Obama Obama.

With all due apologies to the author, Cole Porter's lyrics of "Night and Day" make a point lost on the president. No matter where he is, the Oval Office or Jay Leno's studio set, addressing Congress or holding up traffic in a motorcade on his way to a PTA meeting, the president is not an ordinary citizen. Like it or not, those days are behind him. The private man and the public man become as one in a president. What he does, says, or doesn't say or doesn't do, he does it before an audience.

Obama goes out of his way to seek a celebrity's attention, and he's still in his first hundred days. When he makes an off-hand jest about his bowling score and the Special Olympics -- the sort of tasteless attempt at dark humor that anyone might make within a tight circle of good friends -- the whole world hears it, and the pundits can't wait to leap. We should all "lighten up," but if a president can't resist going on television to banter with a comedian, he ought to leave the comedy to the comedian, who gets paid for sarcasm and irony.

It's a shame that the eye of the camera tempts presidents to try to be the entertainer in chief. Michelle might emulate Bess Truman after Harry couldn't resist playing the piano with Lauren Bacall in fetching repose atop the upright. Mr. Truman, on a night out at the National Press Club, was only doing what any red-blooded man might, but Bess was not amused. She told him it simply wasn't dignified, that he was definitely not to "play it again, Harry."

Dignity, of course, isn't what it used to be. Indeed, the concept seems faintly quaint in an era when almost anything goes. As comfortable as the president may look on the CBS show "60 Minutes," with Jay Leno or in a primetime press conference, he's spending valuable emotional and intellectual capital with the relentless exposure in the modern media. Confident and cool, he's nevertheless beginning to look a lot like a man afflicted with the hubris of show biz.

Since the campaign ended, the stakes have changed. He has yet to understand the lesson learned by Steven Chu, his secretary of energy. Asked what he likes least about his new job, he replied: "The fact that I'm constantly being told that I have to be careful what I say to the press and in public. I can't speculate out loud anymore. Everything I say is taken with total seriousness."

Even laughter can be suspect. Steve Croft, the president's interviewer on "60 Minutes," suggested the president might be "punch drunk" when he chuckled aloud in discussing the crash of the economy. "Gallows humor," the president later called it. But that doesn't work for a president, whether hot or cool. Most of us didn't expect Bill Clinton to feel our pain, and we don't expect Barack Obama to laugh at it.

None of this will matter much if, as he suggested it would in his press conference this week, the economic crisis soon eases. He'll get the credit, and that's how it should be. But there should be a bright line between behaving as the commander in chief and entertaining as a celebrity in chief.

The history of Washington and Hollywood eager to trade places is a long one. Politicians and entertainers imagine themselves as stars in the same galaxy. Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart campaigned for FDR, to the dismay of studio executives (that, too, seems quaint today). JFK enjoyed the company of Marilyn Monroe and was pals with Frank Sinatra (who later liked to hang out with the Reagans). Barbra Streisand sometimes slept at the White House (in the Lincoln Bedroom, of course) during the Clinton years.

Said Gerald Ford, in another context, "If Lincoln were alive today, he'd be spinning in his grave." Lauren Bacall understood the "natural attraction" between Washington and Hollywood. "They have access to real power, and we sing, dance and act."

The modern president crosses that bright line between statecraft and stagecraft at his peril. Obama would do well to remember that statecraft is what we elected him to manage. He should leave the barbs and yuks to the professionals.

king or jester?
hollywood types are the modern version of the old worlde court jester. Gaudy and jingling, they'd cart-wheel around the court, telling bawdy jokes and looking up ladies' skirts. Today's "celebrities" are really no different. Just as no one took the jester seriously, neither should we take hollywood seriously.

obama has positioned himself as our king. His and michelle's images are everywhere. Go to Wal-Mart and you can buy polar fleece with his beaming countenance! Simultaneously, he is convorting with the jesters! He is NOT statesman-ly, nor is he presidential.

No, I'm afraid our dear president is a cartoonish joke...a jester wearing a crown.

THE TITANIC HITS ICE BERG
JAY LINO AND THE TONIGHT SHOW BAND PLAYED ON,THE SHIP IS STARTING TO TAKE ON MORE WATER,ITS MIDNIGHT,NOW IS THE TIME THIS IS THE MOMENT TO ASK JESUS CHRIST INTO YOUR HEART.HE IS OUR ONLY HOPE GET ON THE SONSHIP.

Barak
Obama was seduced by the approval of the moment to make that joke about Special Olympics. As the crowd got into his story about bowling, out it came, as if he was trying to keep the momentum going.

It was a telling moment. And it speaks to his personal discipline...and what he'll seemingly sacrifice it for. I will say, however, that at least the comment was meant to be self-depricating. Bush never would have made that kind of mistake, nor did he for the 8 years he was in office.

Who is the puppetmaster?
I wonder who is really pulling his strings as he bounces from one media event to another, avoiding "being Presidential?" He is like the child who wanted a puppy. Begged and cajoled, cried and offered he would take care of it. So, the parent relented only to find the child wanted to have a puppy, not actually take care of it. Obama's handlers wanted him to be president. He said he wanted to BE president. But he doesn't want to do what a president has to do. He abdicates to his puppet masters as he runs around being "cool." This is not a big surprise to those of us who actually looked into his past. Ever wonder who made the decision this was the guy to prop up, support, get into the best colleges, into the sewer of Chicago politics? The info is out there, but the "press" wasn't interested. They had to help elect the first Black president, and they did. We will all pay the price for not having this man-child vetted properly, opposed to the anal exam to which Sarah Palin was, and is still, subjected. While Obama and his sycophants in and out of the media call for "fairness" in everything we do, the press has shown fairness in years in covering political campaigns. No surprise there.

Figurehead in Chief
Someone asked right after inauguration what I thought of Obama. I told him I thought he was basically a figurehead who was going to do the bidding of his controllers (Soros, et al).

I was almost immediately concerned that I had been too flippant in my response, and that I should have answered differently.

However, watching Obama over the last two months, I think I may have been more accurate than I initially thought.

He's like the magician's assistant who distracts you while the the magician does his sleight of hand. He's the distraction while the con man operates the shell game. Just try and keep your eye on the ball! Nope. Sorry. You lose!

If I see this jug eared moron
on the t.v. I either turn off the t.v. or leave the room. He is so overexposed I can't bear to hear or see the punk a$$ anymore. What a fine mess we Americans have gotten ourselves into. All in the name of being "historic." Well, there's plenty of "historic" in our future and it is all bad.

Give obama a break
He's just doing what front men do.

Economic crisis
If and when the economic crisis eases....free markets and economic freedom should get the credit not Obama. What did anything he do help this situation? The money for ACORN, the bridges, the roads WHAT?

oooh
I think I hit a nerve, isn't that special, I got called a name by one of the resident morons.
Oooh I am sooo hurt.Of course they gave the
TOTUS the debates, they were in the bag for him and still are..that's what presstitootion is all about, they sold themselves for a mess of
Kenyan pottage.
HE still can't speak without his puppeteers writing it large on his crutch and I STILL won't listen to a liar.
One thing for sure, I had my issues with President Bush, but he and Laura at least have
class and would never, ever mock disabled people, nor would President Bush go on 60 Minutes and giggle and laugh at the pain Americans are feeling as one that's high on some
drug..he did tell us in one of his narcissist screeds he did do drugs, how do we know if he's stopped he is such a pathological liar.

Not all the "American People"
nmi says"The American people were ready for change" and that is probably a TRUE statement as far as it goes.
The *Motto, Creed, etc* "HOPE & CHANGE" has a nice, calm sound. As a Life-Long believer in "Murphy's Law " I have always found Planning with due diligence and care beats "Hope" every time. It seems to me that, at the moment, we, the People, are not getting the benefit of much CONSTRUCTIVE PLANNING and are sorta heavy on HOPE..May I say I HOPE I AM WRONG!!

For LC, DARKNESS FISH & ANDREA:

Fact is, it was George Walker Bush who is most responsible for the fact that our President is now Barack Hussein Obama.

Obviously, after eight years of two disastrous Bush Administrations, the American people were ready for change.

Smoke, Mirrors, and Puppets!
Why should His Imperial Majesty spend all or even most of his time in the oval office - after all, it's not like he really IS the President; that distinction seems instead to belong to the Speaker of the House, Comrade Pelosi - assisted by her gang of merry thieves! What the left is about is "Symbolism Over Substance" (thanks Rush) - smoke and mirrors - deception, duplicity, etc. Obumma is nothing but a figure head - a front - for the pit of vipers hard at work behind the scenes and throughout the media and education! As long as he shines brightly, it is hoped that most Americans will be blinded to the reality that this is NOT a one man show by any means! We have got to wake up!! If someone would simply turn on the lights, the entire "operation" would become starkly evident!

Well said. I lived in NJ for fourteen years. there is a reason why the Sopranos is set in Jersey.

Jim

nmi N.J.
Give it up nmi. Bush has left the world stage. Deal with it!AND get over this ultra conservative B.S. that you're trying to dish up. I am not ULTRA conservative. I DO have common sense and an I.Q. above 75!

Let's see...,you are posting from the state that has people leaving in DROVES. N.J. has been run by dems. FOREVER! They've run it into the ground. And yet here you are....,apparently a proud democrat. Do you not EVER ask how Corzine and Company are working for you?Heads up Buddy...,they're not!

You act like we are still in Primary Season. Hello...,your guy is President.

Now is the time for you to try to wrap your brain around the insanity of what you have brought about. Take responsibility!

You helped elect a man for P.O.T.U.S. that has a resume that would leave space on a postage stamp! For whatever reason...,you thought it would work for you.

People like you who refuse to get their learn on are the reason for the the mess that this nation finds itself in.

Hey Nmi...,do me a favor. when you get your Barry Dunham prize in your mailbox...,let me know.

Don't know who Barry Dunham is? That's your guy. He was Barry Dunham till he went to college. Hmmm., bet you did not know that. You do not seem anywhere near informed.

nmi
Actually there has been plenty of conservative anger directed at GWBush regarding spending and open borders.

BTW who was it that got his insipid-er-intrepid nomination of Harriet Miers pulled? I don't recall a single conservative supporting her. The only support that nomination garnered was from Dems, RINOS, and CINOS.

Jim

nmi
Who's being the hypocrite here? You libs trashed Bush for eight years and now you're offended that we criticize Obama? The pot calling the kettle black, I'd say. Plus, you libs invented political correctness and reminded us constantly how Bush didn't have "gravitas"--time you got a taste of your own medicine.

DESTINY BENDER
YOU are hilarious! That post is the funniest I've ever read on TH. Unlike BHO, the wannabe, you should be in show biz.

Hugh Grant went on Leno, too!
Press Spokesman Robert Gibbs (Family Guy) - "Fresh off his Tonight Show appearance, the Bongo-Bongo room @ the Las Vegas Hilton is proud to welcome President Barack Obama to an exclusive week-long engagement. Next week President Obama will be sitting in for Judge Judy while she's on vacation and later this month, America's favorite President will make special Guest Appearances on American Idol, Dancing with the Stars and NBA Basketball on TNT where he'll go one-on-one with one of his biggest supporters (Sir) Charles Barkley (fresh out of 3 days of incarceration ). During this time, Michelle Obama will compete on ESPN's World's Strongest Man Competition as well as WWF Smackdown, where she'll be teamed with recently defeated Divas Champion Maryse. Presidential Campaign Manager David Plouffe has emailed our on-line supporters with Free WWE Mobile on AT&T codes to watch the First Lady kick some Conservative butt! Rush - are you listening? Additionally, Mr. Obama has instructed me to be perfectly clear – he will continue to spend America into oblivion without interrupting his busy television schedule.

Enjoy the veal - I'll be here all week."

LAWYER JOKES
Know any good lawyer jokes to send BHO? He could add them to his witty routine.

Easy to Forget, Why So Hard to Remember?

SUZANNE FIELDS writes: "Like the beat beat beat of the tom-tom, like the tick tick tock of the clock, like the drip drip drip of the raindrops, a voice within me keeps repeating, Obama Obama Obama."

Ultra Conservatives (UCons) on Town Hall.com are having a field day heaping criticisms upon Pres. Obama, some of them deserved. These are the same UCons who incredibly never had -- and still don't have -- a harsh word to say about the former occupant of the White House, George W. Bush, who was essentially guilty of the same "sins" of which Pres. Obama stands accused.

Obama's insensitive comment on the Jay Leno show was tasteless and
just pliain stupid, but having UCons charging en masse to condemn Obama is conveniently hypocritical.

These same Ultra Conservatives for eight years overlooked and defended the many gaffes uttered with predictable regularity by Pres. Bush that they seemed to be scripted screwups. After all, Mr. Bush, an Ivy Leaguer like Pres. Obama, is a graduate of Yale, and also holds an MBA from Harvard so GWB, like BHO should also know better.

HE THINKS HE'S FUNNY
He is his own best audience...But then he would be wouldn't he? I think this essay gets it...he'd really rather be in show biz. Being president is dreary after all. He has to spend all that time in the White House, and has to import show biz on Wednesday nights for entertainment, cause all those antiques and honky portraits get so BORING day after day.

Teabag
"Whenever I see his mug on t.v. I either turn the channel or shut the thing off. I WILL NOT listen to anything that liar says."

Who cares.

"I DO NOT get what other people see as his great oratorical skills."

Of course you don't. You probably thought W was brilliant because he sounded as uninformed as you do.

"To me, a great orator can speak well in any venue..."

Hmm. Like a town hall setting or a debate? I'll remind you teabag that most commentators thought BO won all three against McCain.

"Rena..he's a signing puppet for Nazi, Dingy
and Fishhead (Emmanuel)and I might add Soros who made 2 billion out of this mess."

Do you feel crazy saying these things? You sound crazy.

"It seems like what's happening is like a James Bond movie, only there is no James Bond."

You writing feels like Dumb & Dumber, except there's no Dumb.

BHO on Leno
I just wonder what was the carbon footprint for BHO to travel to LA to talk to Leno for a few minutes. I guess that is not a real concern, but we must enact cap & trade to tax the masses, uh, I mean save the planet.

A 1988 political cartoon
published in Canadian rag-chain Canoe's "Sun" (various cities) detailed it very well.

Basically, the subject of the cartoon was Pakistan's wannadabe-queen Benazir Bhutto, upon her first taking office as that nation's PM--an advisor telling her (in between a tiger, bear and magnified Persian-cat) "ma'am, there are no bars or moats in this zoo".

Analogously, 0bama wanted to be POTUS (and achieved it) but is clueless on how to deal in the barless/moatless zoo of world-politics.

John of Virginia
Believe me when I say that I hate to say this as much as you hate to hear it, but he is OUR president.

and we're stuck with him for the next three years nine months and twenty-four days

Start getting ready for the mid-terms.

the reason bo is pushing so hard is that he knows that people are gonna get REAL fed up with his agenda and so the sooner he gets it through - or as much as he can - the better off he (NOT WE) will be.

AND he knows that the dingbats he's gotta deal with are already thinking of the mid-terms (picture a senate without chris dodd or harry reid, picture a house without nancy pelosi, barney frank or john murtha) so bo has to move FAST.

Think? this is no time to think!!! just do as I say - I know best!!!.

(turn to camera, flash pearly whites and smile - YOU!!! Get on the phone, call your congressman/woman/thing, call your Senator, tell them to FOLLOW ME!!!!!

Don't Count on "Change" in BHO's Ways
Gestell, your prez is incapable of "realiz(ing) that he can't make up for any policy failures by being a celebrity," even if someone close to him tells him so. He is a narcissist. He cannot help himself.

Even though you are a liberal, you would be happier under a Ron Paul presidency. A government that respects the constitution creates an environment more livable for all ideologies.

Sad, but true
Unfortunately, Obama has a very wide streak of 'celebrity' in him. As a liberal Democrat and Obama supporter, I don't find this a very attractive feature. And yet, the allure of celebrity must be very great. This is often true of highly-placed liberals (and conservatives--such as Bill Buckley). They know they ar important and influential, and in our culture the place where all of this converges is 'entertainment.' Obama needs to realize that he can't make up for any policy failures by being a celebrity. I hope he has someone close to him who can tell him this. But I'm still waiting...

Whenever I
see his mug on t.v. I either turn the channel or shut the thing off. I WILL NOT listen to anything that liar says. Maybe if everyone that's sick of him turned the channel to one that doesn't carry his blather or better yet
shut the tv off, it will be noticed by whatever means they all know what we watch and when.
I don't believe a word he says so why listen, and I DO NOT get what other people see as his
great oratorical skills. To me, a great orator can speak well in any venue, with or without a script and/or telepromter..he's helpless without his crutch.
Isn't it said that overexposure of anything or anyone can cause the object of that exposure to lose it's impact?
Rena..he's a signing puppet for Nazi, Dingy
and Fishhead (Emmanuel)and I might add Soros who made 2 billion out of this mess. It seems like what's happening is like a James Bond movie, only there is no James Bond.

The Last Person....
...that I need to be entertained by is the president. It is his duty to protect and defend the constitution, this nation and its citizens. Not only is he Attention Deficit,, he has dyslexia as well. He thinks that he read REJECT and OFFEND instead of PROTECT and DEFEND!!

Modern technology and some clever deviates have combined forces to give us a new kind of leader: Sir LaughALot. He'll take you from riches to rags in just 100 days.

flap ears is so shallow
he is uncomfortable unless he is the center of attention of everything.

The country has been told that he is now the teller of scary tales and unless he gets everything he wants disaster is coming for all.

But now he has gotten his billions from the compliant dims in congress and where are the miracles and when will they begin.

But for flap ears, the pretend president, these early $ 2 trillion deficits are just the beginning of his insatiable desire to spend. He tells all that $10 trillion or more of deficits are still needed before he will be satisfied in remaking american as he thinks it should be.

And still the lefties are cheering the fool on, oblivious to the coming disaster caused by reckless spending, huge borrowing from china and the muzzies and running the gov't printing presses.

But there is no free lunch but why should the trolls care. Their messiah has told them there is a free lunch and he is running the kitchen.

Hollywood and the Dems
Lets be honest, Mrs Fields. Your generic use of the term "politicians and hollywood" should be further defined to mean the vast majority of hollywood and the democratic party.

Much like the rest of the media, the democrats enjoy a great deal of support from hollywood. The bias they create through manipulative pop culture against conservatives is extremely effective, especially with the 18 to 30 age group. And it doesn't cost the democrats a dime!! Does anyone have any doubt who Jay Leno and David Letterman wanted to win this past election?

The bottom line is the Jews control hollywood (and the media)and the Jews are the primary finaciers and supporters of the far left (see George Soros & Peter Lewis). Always have been, always will be. Thats why its perfectly acceptable, in any news publication in America, to print the words "the Christian right", but never "the Jewish left"

Narcissism
By now we all know Obama is a narcissist. It's all about him, his exposure, basking in the mindless adoration of his sycophant fans, and megalomania. Classic signs of a tyrant/dicatator in the making. If you aren't afraid, you should be.

A...freaking..MEN!
Thank you posters 1,2,3,4,5,AND 6!Well said.

I am so weary of him and it has not even been 100 days. It seems like he's been President for almost 100 years!

His strategy of appearing on Leno, his computer Town Hall, his online "TRUTH" website,etal..., comes right from Saul Alinsky's book,"Rules for Radicals".Get a copy. You'll see. It's all about keeping the stupid and the disenfranchised. loyal to his agenda.

Fields is making sure that the Fourth Estate stays dead!

Look for a TEA party in your area. If you cannot attend..., send a TEABAG via the postal system to your members of Congress that you think deserve them. Don't send any tea. Empty the bag first. The Fed. Postal System considers the tea a potentially dangerous substance and won't deliver.

Word is that a lot of empty teabags are arriving in Washington D.C. every day!

HONOR! DUTY! COUNTRY!

Edamon50
Yes, you are correct, but the distinction does not mean much. The sax show was still a first of its type for a candidate. And Clinton DID continue undignified TV appearances as President. Let's not forget that MTV "boxers, not briefs" performance; or his famous "I got called 'fat' by Rush Limbaugh" speech before the Press Club. My point was only to show that Ms. Fields has puppy love for the dapper BHO.

BTW, do you remember Nixon's "Sock it Me" on Laugh-in? That was a gas!

john
The difference between Bill Clinton playing his sax on Arsenio Hall's show and Barack Obama going on Leno is a huge one. If I'm not mistaken, Clinton appeared on Arsenio's show as a candidate for the presidency in 1992, not as a sitting President. He was doing exactly what a candidate is supposed to do, use every outlet to sell yourself to the voting public. But once he was President, i don't recall any stints on Letterman, Leno, or any entertainment shows. Obama, however wastes valuable time and resources flying around the country trying to win "Most Popular" credit like some desperate high school kid.

Isn't it all too much?...
I go to the news stand and at least 3 or 4 of the women's magazine have Michelle Obama on the cover. Shouldn't she be working on literacy or something? Why do the Obamas have so much time to "hang out" on TV or magazine covers, when the country is going down the tubes financially? I don't want to listen to Obama's light hearted banter on Jay Leno when my husband and I are slowly losing our pension because of the economy. So do me a favor, Mr. President, get back to work! and do your job for pete sack..has it even been a hundred days yet?

Obama's Indelicate Exposure
My mom always said there are consequences for
all the decisions we make.... Consequences
that will follow. Good or bad....

They will follow! I am so glad I am not in
his shoes, or those who played a part in
destroying our country and our life style!
What goes round will ultimately come back
round!

This column is just apologia for our narcisstic prez. Nice try comparing that cruel, cocksure quip about the retarded with Truman's stint at the piano. Truman had some musical talent, and battled a press biased AGAINST him. Attitudes sure did change when Billy Boy played his saxophone on TV. "How cute," I can just hear Ms. Fields squealing, as she stands in line behind Monica.

Sudden Celebrity Syndrome
I get the impression that Mr. Obama is a definite lover of attention. I feel that he is going to burn out sooner than he thinks while trying to be "Mr. Popularity" and our Commander In Chief, all at the same time. My job is not near as time consuming or demanding as his, and I would not have the time to do my job well and also to fly here and there do this show and that one, so I wonder how much time he is spending making sure that decisions he makes are GOOD for us...or is he just signing our lives away just to get his name in the paper? Hmmmm....

living down to expectations
I wish I could say I was surprised at his lack of self awareness but I'm not. This punk, unqualified and overwhelmed with self-importance has no clue or care of appropriate behavior. If McCain had been elected and acted this way he'd have been crucified by the press. Time to call this "wanna be" out - he is not qualified - for anything! Shame on the MSM and the stupid, stupid people who voted for this perpetual homecoming king.
