Secrets Are No Fun for Unions

Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Who are you voting for this fall? The answer to that question is none of my business. In fact, it is a fundamental American right to have your vote be as private as you wish. Unfortunately, Democrats and their financiers, Big Labor, want to abolish a worker’s fundamental, American right to a secret ballot.

Why are they doing this? Maybe because Democrats have openly admitted they owe their 2006 electoral success to Big Labor and have promised the elimination of the secret ballot as a return on investment. That is why during this Congressional session every Democrat in the House and Senate voted to abolish the secret ballot. Thankfully, Republicans in the Senate were able to stop this disastrous bill.

This is a moment when hyperbole is unnecessary. This unprecedented power grab by Big Labor and the willingness of Democrats to ignore such a fundamental American right threatens the very nature of our system of government.

Unions already spend hundreds of millions of dollars to influence elections. Imagine what they could do when entire industries are unwillingly coerced into joining a union and forced to pay dues – dues earmarked for the next election cycle.

In fact, alleged coercion for political gain is already occurring. Recently, The Wall Street Journal reported that the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation asked the Department of Justice to investigate the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). The basis for the request centers on this fact:

“The union adopted a new amendment to its constitution at last month's SEIU convention, requiring that every local contribute an amount equal to $6 per member per year to the union's national political action committee. This is in addition to regular union dues. Unions that fail to meet the requirement must contribute an amount in ‘local union funds’ equal to the ‘deficiency’ plus a 50% penalty.” (The Wall Street Journal, 7/28/08)

Can you name any other company or organization that could compel its membership to fund political organizations that rank and file membership may or may not agree with? As I said earlier, hyperbole is not needed on this issue. With November approaching, a potential Barack Obama administration promising to “play some offense for organized labor” and Democrats’ determination to eliminate the secret ballot, the need for a robust Republican presence in the Senate has never been greater.

So important is eliminating the secret ballot to Big Labor that a few weeks ago Democrat Senate candidates, Reps. Tom Allen (ME), Tom Udall (NM), and Mark Udall (CO), along with Kay Hagan (NC), Bruce Lunsford (KY), Jeanne Shaheen (NH), and Jeff Merkley (OR) all scurried to Chicago for a meeting when Union bosses beckoned. The three current Congressmen already voted to eliminate the secret ballot and likely, along with the other Democrat candidates in Chicago, pledged to eliminate secret ballot elections in the future as well.

Are such promises to Big Labor leaders representative of the will of the people? Absolutely not! Amazingly, Democrats don’t seem to care that their agenda flies in the face of public opinion. More than 85% of Americans oppose eliminating the secret ballot and even the media, across all political spectrums, has editorialized against such legislation.

“Abuses of workers’ true wishes not only are potential, they are guaranteed. There is no ‘free choice’ in this travesty, clearly a payoff to union leaders who contributed so handsomely to the Democrats’ November election victory.” (The San Francisco Examiner, 02/16/07)

“Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has decided to hold a vote this Wednesday on perhaps the most unpopular element of the Democratic agenda… Under the so-called card-check bill, a company would no longer have the right to demand a secret-ballot election to certify a union, thus stripping 140 million American workers of the right to decide in private whether to organize.” (The Wall Street Journal, 6/18/07)

Democrats continue to oppose the will of the people, instead working to reward Big Labor. In fact, this issue is so far out of the mainstream that even ultra-liberal former Democrat Senator and Vice Presidential candidate George McGovern has publicly opposed this legislation.

Additionally, elimination of the secret ballot will be the second payback for Big Labor, since Democrats already cut funding to the federal agency tasked with investigating union corruption. Without Republicans in the Senate to stop them, what fundamental right will Democrats eliminate next at the behest of their financial supporters?

This fall when you go to the polls, the choice is clear (and private); the choice is Republican.

First of all, your article conflates voting for public office, which is not at issue, and voting to join a union.

Second, Workers can still vote under the Employee Free Choice Act. At any time, if 30 percent of the workers want an election, they can have one. And once they have a union, workers also vote to elect their union representatives.

Third, This bill isn't about union voting, it's about the right of worker to organize if they want to. Companies in this country are doing all kinds of things to keep their staff non-union. Employees should be able to form unions if they so desire..

Labor Union Lunacy
Labors Unions are their own worst enemy. They have been responsible for losing more jobs than any other factor.

Not too many years ago I kept track of the negotiations at Newport Steel in the Cincinatti. Newport Steel was struggling against the Japanese steel companies at the time and was having trouble keeping the company profitable. The unions were demanding a 12% increase in benefits which the company could not afford to pay. Management made one final offer - 3% or they will shut the doors. The union voted against this final offer so the following morning the gates were cloed. All jobs disappeared.

Of course the union claimed it was foreign competition.

In NY after 9/11 many people tried to volunteer to help in the cleanup. Unions, however, was requiring everyone to join the union before working.

Unions don't create jobs, businesses do!. When businesses have had their fill of nonsense, they move on. The auto industry is a perfect example of the coming self-destruction.

This is about coersion
Most workers, when presented with a choice on whether or not to have a vote on union representation, will choose to have the vote. This will eliminate any potential for strong arm tactics by union reps--so long as the vote to unionize is per secret ballot. If the ballot is not secret, many will vote to unionize simply to avoid poor treatment or loss of their jobs. When any worker is forced to contribute to political campaigns or causes that they do not believe in, it constitutes a loss of personal liberty that is contrary to the principals this country is founded on. I think many people in this country are finally waking up to the fact that unions are destroying American industry and government schools and the Democrats can see the writing on the wall. This is nothing more than payback to unions that have been the most ardent supporters of the Democratic party for years. WAKE UP! Ford lost over $23 Billion dollars last year (union). Honda turned a healthy profit (non-union). Coincidence? I think not. All American automotive manufacturers are laying off thousands of workers to cut costs or moving plants out of the country. As for our schools, how's that working out for us? Want to lose your job? It's easy. Unionize.

This is a Surprise?
The Democrats have ignored over 80% of the population of the U.S. who wants the border sealed. They have ignored those of us who want to win in Iraq and not surrender to the terrorists. They are convinced the people in the U.S. wants to pay higher taxes.

How much further can they get from what the people want?

Unions
Unions were organized because business ignored the workers and endangered their lives. The workers were also paid very little for their work.

In the Sixties, the owners of businesses realized that the trained worker was one of their most valuable assets. In many cases, it takes two or three years to properly train someone and you don't want to lose that investment.

As a result, companies basically gave the workers what they needed and listened to their complaints. The unions weren't needed. The workers realized this and decided it was useless to pay high union dues for something they didn't need.

But the union officials now were finding less and less money for them to spend. This is only a first attack by unions. You will see more.

WHY NOT?
Look the fact is the REPUBS have blown most of the chances they have had to redeam themselves on soooooo many issues. They for the most part are holding stron on this one but, I have not seen to many more issues where they can be trusted. The DEMS are SCUMBAGS and for the most part they know it and admit to it and at the very least they wont deny it. I would not vote for any DEM running in my area because they are what they are but, show me an indpt of liertan and the repub is sucking wind for my vote..... We can not afford to have the dems control all three house of the elected government. We have things like the JUDGES to put in place who belive in the RULE OF LAW not EMOTITIONS to JUDGE. So I will have to watch this byt I WILL NOT be BLACK MAILED INTO VOTING for any repubs..........

And If They Pull This Off
you know the Unions will grow. They'll be crawling with Communists and God knows Who else in a Heartbeat. One reason behind Unions was keeping the Communists out.

Who IS Big Labor? Losing the right to your secret vote is losing your status as a citizen of the USA. We were born here too. Illegal aliens get more consideration than we do.

God Help the USA before the Democrats destroy everything it stands for.

It's no secret...
We all know what the democrats are up to. These are the shameless tactics of a party that must always resort to cheap tricks in order to win. And they’re willing to do so because they have no shame.

If you think about it...
...unions are Communistic by nature. Everyone gets the same pay rate regardless of skill, knowledge or work ethic. And the "State" in this case are the union big wigs.

unions
All unions do is drive a company out of business, see steel. The next is cause inflation of a product, see automobiles.
Unions use to be for employees now they are self serving.

Unions
I agree with Clendon, I used to live west of Buffalo NY where Bethlaham Steel used to be, I say used to be until the United Steal Workers Union struck them out of business. I remember every year like clock work they went on strike until Bethlaham Steel just gave up and closed the gate forever. By the way Bethlaham made some of the best steel in the world.

Dave

The Anti Walmart Law
The Employee Free Choice Act is the latest fraudulent offering by our congress to reward labor unions for their money and other support. The law, if enacted, would place non union employees in the uncomfortable position of refusing to sign a representation card offered under implied physical threat by a union goon. Believe me, union goons appear in more than B rated movies.

The Employees Free Choice Act would replace secret ballots with one on one sign ups. It is anything but “free choice.” Obama has stated he will sign the legislation. McCain has stated he will veto it. This is the legislation thought to be the only way the unions can finally “get” Walmart. What a sad day that will be for all of us.

Have unions evolved?
Unions may have had a purpose to promote rights and benefits for employees, but I believe they have evolved into something as unfortunate as the greedy corporations they negotiate with. They became self important to the extent of practicing threats and intimidation similar to organized crime.

Union members would be wise to consider history such as the US steel industry. Namely, a very strong industry now mostly exists in foreign countries. If the next administration and congress does nothing or makes economic conditions worse, union members may find their companies might relocate or worse, cease operations. Our manufacturing exodus has not only created economic and strategic threats, it has made even non-allies wealthier through US imports of foreign goods, creating exaggerated demands that have led to our present condition of inflation and increasing unemployement. One could only dream of the jobs, federal taxes, and social security contributions those jobs could've brought to America's economy . I fail to see where modern day unions have helped many, other than their union bosses.

Unions create jobs for goons, only

Employees should be able to form unions if they so desire..

=========

I’ll agree with that. They can form unions in any company that the Union has established, and have created new jobs. Union have only created jobs for goons who threaten the workers. I can tell you that from personal experience.

If the Union has the right to “form” if they so desire, why can’t the company hire, pay, fire, as they desire. If no one wants to work there, the company will go out of business, and no other group of people will spend their money creating a company, if they know they will have to live with a union.

then us see what jobs are available.

I will agree that no union was ever started where the company treated them properly. but whose opinion of “treating them properly” are we supposed to believe?

My impression of SEIU
is a union for those pretty low on the ladder, such as janitors, hotel cleaners, waitresses, nurse's aides, orderlies, with a few higher-ups like nurses.

Fifty cents a month from every member doesn't seem out of line; but if any of those po' folks don't want to vote Democrat, too bad. Their $$ is only theirs courtesy of the union, so it's only right that they fork over dues and special lugs to those who control their destiny.

SEIU is already contributing $100mil toward Obama advertising, with Move On and a few other fiercely patriotic organizations.

The unions seem somewhat less interested in a member's immigration status than in his warm, Democrat-voting body. MEMBERS of construction, service, landscaping firms sometimes feel quite different.

The Unions
My Dad was a passenger conductor on the Pennsylvania Railroad. I remember so well that when a genleman named Whitney was president of the union to which my Dad had to belong to work came out in the Railroader Magazine stating that he was going to use all the funds available to fight Truman's election. My Dad was furious saying that he did want want his dues to support any political party. When the union pulled a strike during wartime, my Dad took his vacation in February and sat at home. He could not work, but he would not strike. Enough with the unions. Keep the secret voting.

More on the Unions
My Dad also felt that unions were started to protect the working man, but had become a corrupt organization protecting only their leaders. Years ago auto workers went on strike. Their incomes from the unions were higher than their salaries. What happened to Pittsburg, which was the steel capital of the world, when the unions were in control? What happened to the auto industry? The right to a secret ballot is a fundamental right of every American.

unions
One only needs to look at our educational system to see what unions have done there. My children went to catholic school where they still educate rather worry about whether about having a job because of poor performance.
Recently local 5724 United Steelworkers settlel their strike with Ormet Corp. While we were on strike if you made more than $400 a week you were denied strike benefits.Only 4 months after the strike was settled that we found out the union rep was in charge of the program was keeping the money for himself.

UNIONS
Unions made the middle class, then destroyed it.

Have any of you ever worked third shift in a
factory ? If not, you missed a lot of booz.

Have you ever had a union rep. visit your home,
while they were trying to unionize your work
place? His last words were,I HOPE YOU ARE WELL
INSURED,YOU HAVE A NICE HOME,IT WOULD BE A SHAME
IF YOU HAD A FIRE.
At that point,we became small business people.
Now, we find the goverment can cause you more
trouble than the union

And they complain about Big Oil
At least we know what Big Oil's trying to do. Thye're a business. Businesses exist to make money, nothing more, nothing less.

Big Labor is the biggest sham in the history of commerce. Labor Unions have so far outlived their usefulness that they make the UN look relevant. In the 1880s, when workers WERE abused (with long hours, little training, and unsafe conditions) unions were necessary. The problem is that the modern worker has so many legal protections that the Unions have become irrelevant.

Nowadays, they are just out for power and money. The difference between them and the companies they bully is that they try to hide behind lies like "We're just protecting workers." All they're really doing is getting rich off the backs of the very employees (who get less and less benefit from Unions all the time) they are ostensibly "trying to help."

How much help is it when the UAW bullies car companies into practices that vastly increase expenses and lower productivity and quality? Ask an auto worker who got laid off by GM because GM couldn't afford them if the Union helped. Ask the driver of a car of such poor quality that (for example) the brake rotors were ground to the point of being unsalvageable after 7,000 (I repeat SEVEN Thousand, not seventy, not forty-seven, not seventeen: seven) miles and that had to be recalled several times for major safety issues (like the electrical wiring being prone to shorts and fires) how well union work rules and firing rules are helpful.

Unions are now just another corrupt political action group without which the world would be a much better place.

Roger
You only need to look a the civilian side of the Federal Government (as opposed to the Military which is most assuredly NOT unionized) to see the disasterous results from unions. For every productive government worker (and they do exist, I've known several) there's at least two other government "workers" whose work the productive member has to do in addition to their own. That 2/3 majority cannot be fired for lack of productivity (or practically any other reason) because of Union Rules.

Labor unions = legalized mob extortion
From dealings family members have had with unions I can say confidently that they are nothing but legalized versions of the Mob "protection" racket.

ohiodupe
Which union CONTROLS you davie boy.

To a union man 1
You oppose my Total Tax Reform plan called “One Tax And Done”. Do you really enjoy paying much more for everything than you should have to pay; and do you enjoy seeing many union jobs taxed out of existence? There is something that you haven’t considered:

It is your duty to sell the plan. It is your duty and responsibility to your union, to go to your union meetings and remind the other members that they pay a lot of money to the union as dues, and that a lot of that dues money (how much?) is given by the union bosses to state and federal Democrat-party politicians to keep them in office. Your union bosses don’t give any money to Republican-party politicians.

It is also your duty to remind the membership that these Democrat-party politicians are constantly passing more and higher taxes, some of which are to be used to give an additional 845 billion dollars to the UN. These taxes have forced and continue to force many tens of thousands of employers out of business, out of the state, and out of the country, along with all the many jobs these employers provided. This is called outsourcing, and taxes are one of the main reasons for it. Hershey’s closing of the Luden’s Candy factory is a good example of this. Luden’s is a union shop, and the union jobs are going to Mexico, India, and Red China, thanks to all the destructive taxes the Democrat-party politicians passed and increased.

These same Democrat-party politicians are also trying to get amnesty for the many millions of illegal aliens, so they can take jobs presently held by long-term union members. Ask members of construction unions, who have already lost their jobs to illegal aliens, about this. The politicians you are paying to keep in office are taxing millions of union jobs out of existence, and are trying to get illegal aliens into others.

To a union man 2
Remember that, in 1990, these Democrat-party federal-level politicians greatly increased these taxes to force tens of thousands of employers to put millions of Americans out of jobs, to anger the people and get President Bush out of office. In 1991, the democrat-controlled state government did the same for no apparent reason other than “they could”. How many union members lost their jobs? Did the politicians ask for union permission to destroy jobs? All union members are paying the politicians to cut union members’ throats!!!

You must get the membership to send the local union boss to the state union boss and to the national union boss. The state and national bosses should go to the state bosses and national bosses of all the other unions. All the union bosses should go to the state and federal politicians to tell them that they will not get any more money, support, and votes until they repeal all these destructive, union-job-destroying taxes and get rid of the illegal aliens who are taking union jobs. If they don’t repeal the taxes and deport the illegal aliens, use the primary election to give your support to another candidate.

At this time, the state and national bosses can give copies of “One Tax And Done” and “How To Get Rid of Illegal Aliens” to each politician. I’ll follow this letter with state and federal versions of it. You probably haven’t thought about it, but if all those taxes had been repealed by 1946, we would have one of the best railroad systems in the world, and you wouldn’t have to worry that Amtrak might go under and your job might not last for ten more years – a concern you’ve expressed to me. The money that these taxes take from Amtrak is needed by Amtrak to stay in business and provide jobs; and the jobs taken by illegal aliens are needed by you and your union brothers.

Who are you voting for this fall?
"Who are you voting for this fall? The answer to that question is none of my business." No. I have a better answer: "I'm voting just like you...by secret ballot!" Like most of you, that is.

Military Unions
We Americans often tend to look at the implemented ideas by foreign countries. Unionism in other countries is common and rampant. The Armed Forces of many west European countries are unionized. American union bosses are salivating at that prospect here.

OhioDave
I fully agree that employees should be free to vote to unionize free of undue pressure by management.

At the same time, they should be free to vote to NOT unionize, free from undue pressure by union organizers/bosses.

'Check card' ballots reek of the so-called 'free' elections in communist countries, where voting for someone other than the communist landed you in the gulag.

Secrets no fun for unions
So--Why not name the three congressmen who already voted for secret election?

Secrets no fun for unions
