Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

WASHINGTON -- California's increasingly severe and largely self-inflicted economic crisis will deepen on May 19 if, as is probable and desirable, voters reject most of the ballot measures that were drafted as part of a "solution" to the state's budget deficit. They would make matters worse. National economic revival is being impeded because one-eighth of the nation's population lives in a state that is driving itself into permanent stagnation. California's perennial boast -- that it is the incubator of America's future -- now has an increasingly dark urgency.

Under Arnold Schwarzenegger, the best governor the states contiguous to California have ever had, people and businesses have been relocating in those states. For four consecutive years, more Americans have moved out of California than have moved in. California's business costs are more than 20 percent higher than the average state's. In the last decade, net out-migration of Americans has been 1.4 million. California is exporting talent while importing Mexico's poverty. The latter is not California's fault; the former is.

If, since 1990, state spending increases had been held to the inflation rate plus population growth, the state would have a $15 billion surplus instead of a $42 billion budget deficit, which is larger than the budgets of all but 10 states. Since 1990, the number of state employees has increased by more than a third. In Schwarzenegger's less than six years as governor, per capita government spending, adjusted for inflation, has increased nearly 20 percent.

Liberal orthodoxy has made the state dependent on a volatile source of revenues -- high income tax rates on the wealthy. In 2006, the top 1 percent of earners paid 48 percent of the income taxes. California's income and sales taxes are among the nation's highest, its business conditions among the worst, as measured by 16 variables directly influenced by the Legislature. Unemployment, the nation's fourth highest, is 11.2 percent.

Required by law to balance the budget, the Legislature has "solved" the problem by, among other things, increasing the income, sales, gas and vehicle taxes. This, although one rationale for the federal government's gargantuan "stimulus" was to spare states the need to raise taxes which, in California, will more than vitiate the stimulus.

Proposition 1A would create a complicated -- hence probably porous -- spending cap, and a rainy day fund. Realists, however, do not trust the Legislature to obey the law, which may be why some public employees unions cynically support 1A. Another May 19 proposition, opaquely titled the "Lottery Modernization Act," would authorize borrowing $5 billion from future hypothetical lottery receipts. The title is a measure of the political class' meretriciousness.

If voters pass 1A's hypothetical restraint on government spending, their reward will be two extra years (another $16 billion) of actual income, sales and vehicle tax increases. The increases were supposed to be for just two years. Voters are being warned that if they reject the propositions, there might have to be $14 billion in spending cuts. (Note the $15 billion number four paragraphs above.) Even teachers might be laid off. California teachers -- the nation's highest paid, with salaries about 25 percent above the national average -- are emblematic of the grip government employees unions have on the state, where 57 percent of government workers are unionized (the national average is 37 percent).

Flinching from serious budget cutting, and from confronting public employees unions, some Californians focus on process questions. They devise candidate-selection rules designed to diminish the role of parties, thereby supposedly making more likely the election of "moderates" amenable to even more tax increases.

But what actually ails California is centrist evasions. The state's crisis has been caused by "moderation," understood as splitting the difference between extreme liberalism and hyperliberalism, a "reasonableness" that merely moderates the speed at which the ever-expanding public sector suffocates the private sector.

California has become liberalism's laboratory, in which the case for fiscal conservatism is being confirmed. The state is a slow learner and hence will remain a drag on the nation's economy. But it will be a net benefit to the nation if the federal government and other state governments profit from California's negative example, which Californians can make more vividly instructive by voting down the propositions on May 19.

Remember the story of the mule that paid attention only after being walloped by a two-by-four? The Democratic-controlled state Legislature is like that. Fortunately, it has handed voters some two-by-fours -- the initiatives. Resounding rejections of them should get Sacramento's attention.

Meretricious, meretricious,meretricious!
OMGawd, learned a new word today!

And when I think of the word meretricious, I think Obama.

Per Dictionary.com:
Meretricious 2.based on pretense, deception, or insincerity.

That be the big O.

California secede? Wow, there is an empty threat if I ever heard one! Go ahead. That means no more money coming from the federal government. Then where are you going to get the money to pay your huge deficit? If California seceded, it would go instantly bankrupt. It could issue its own form of money instead of using U.S. dollars but its money would be worthless. There's just something about a state/country going bankrupt that makes other nations not trust your money at all.
Instead of making empty threats on TH, you should be badgering your politicians and telling them to cut spending by eliminating thousands of government jobs - but NOT police or firefighters.

Mexicans Will Keep Fleeing Mexico To CA
No matter how bad it is in California, the Mexicans and Central Americans will continue to invade because CA will always be better than their hellholes. Plus we have freebies for the illegals like WIC, food stamps, "free" health care.

California is....
but a microcosm of where America is headed under the Obama regime. The electorate of any state stupid enough to put the likes of Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, Nancy Pelosi, Henry Waxman or Maxine Waters in the U.S Congress deserves whatever comes to them. That stupidity has expanded nationwide with the election of far left radical Obama making it only a matter of time before the country as a whole faces the same fate as California.

Why 1A will pass no matter what
The headline reads "LIMITS STATE SPENDING." The fine print reads "COULD limit future defecits and spending"--which means it absolutely will NOT.
What it will absolutely, positively do is raise $16 billion more taxes from 2010 through 2013. ALL of this additional tax revenue will go directly to the same state employee union workers who have helped bankrupt the state.
Now, to invoke a last remaining California treasure, Albert Brooks and paraphrase his hilarious speech in Lost in America: California politicians no longer have no right to use the words "rainy day" fund. They shouldn't be even able to use the words separately. They should have to say "It is precipitating outside" and "Have a nice NOT night."
Let me explain it to those of you with a California public school education: a rainy day fund would mean that you save when the state is doing well for a "rainy day." So why would we beraising $16 billion a year in tax revenue through 2013 IN THE MIDDLE OF A FINANCIAL CRISIS? Fine print: "IN SOME CASES the state would set aside more money in one of its "rainy day" reserve funds. Higher state taxes recently passed would be extended for up to two years." (UPPER CASE emphasis is mine.)

But look around you: THIS IS the rainy day! It is exactly when you DON'T collect taxes!

Why can't I pull up Opinions ?
Why can't I pull up Opinions ?

Imagine 1,000,000 Nancy Pelosis
Trust me on this one... When you're dealing with public officials in Cal - you're dealing with the incompetent, the arrogant, the corrupt, and the bloated.
Anyone that would argue that we're getting a good deal for our tax dollar is either delusional or a complete liar.

Former or latter; they caused them both!
You think too much George. California has been by far one of the biggest contributors to the entire immigration fiasco buy encouraging them for years to break into our country and raid the treasury. Of course this worked very well for CA for a long time until Fed money started to run out. So they are directly responsible for the former and the latter. I take great pleasure in the failure of thier long misguided socialist utopia. They have thrown thier social engineering at us for many years and thier majority collectivist desires have done great damage to this nation. Then when they finally drive out most of the half hearted Liberals who draw the line at communism and move to a surrounding state then those half hearted Liberals proceed to immedietely try to turn the new state into what they just ran from.

My only hope is that they and socialism in general will show itself for how destructive it is before too much damage has been done. The chickens are coming home to roost in the "Peoples Republic of Kalifornia". Start reaping folks because there is anopther trillion dollars to come up with right behind all your previous promises which you can't even pay now. You'll probably just borrow it out of thin air like you've been doing for years but you will find that eventually the creditors will not give a hoot that you are "KALIFORNIA"...send payment or we cut you off. Then maybe you CA comrades will finally figure out the folly of your ways but I'm not counting on it. We'd love to help from other states but we'll be busy paying for the tens of trillions from the federal direction to pay for the same BS, CA social test tube asininity policies that you've been foisting on the rest of us as a whole, for decades. But hey, good luck with that trillions of dollars in ridiculous obligations that are breaking your back. My advice to CA. Either vote your socialist govt. out or shut up. We don't want to hear it!

Not one anti 1A-E commercial seen
I have not seen or heard one anti 1A-E proposition commercial at all. I have seen/heard dozens in support, which tells me the Unions are at it mightily.

This is precisely why democracy is so vexing: the self-interests of groups are at complete odds with the interests of the State as a whole.

Facts Matter .....
This is a recording . Radical over taxed States and Countries with a agenda that's Politicians devoutly believe that Govt. job is to create Powerful Unions and more Free things ,we formally paid for personally are in a heap of Trouble .
And those States and Countries that promote Union control , Welfare and and Entitlement mentally will fall on death ears by those that are pushed to move away to get away from that moronic Socialist Taxes and ridiculous thinking .
Leaving only those that pay little or no taxes to run those sick and dying states economies that is simply impossible to maintain .
The 7 highest taxed States in America are all in deep Financial trouble .
The 6 lowest taxed states and with few powerful Unions all have near stable economics the media never mentions .
Unionized England and France is approaching 50 % in taxes and the Countries are both near Bankruptcy .
California , Michigan , Md , NY , New Jersey and Conn. have huge Home owner and State Taxes yet their States are in serious trouble .
Texas, Mississippi , Delaware , Florida , North Carolina and North Dakota are not and in Financial trouble and Home owners taxes are few and Zero in Florida and near Zero in Texas as are the other State Taxes .
Enough said .

Don't get me wrong here, I'm a conservative-minded, capitalist, federalist (NOT a republican, they suck) Marine combat vet who feels angry about tax, illegals, etc. In a strange mix common to Californians, I'm also an environmentally-minded fellow (who doesn't believe in global warming) that seeks more responsible use of resources and wants to preserve nature wherever possible. I've participated in grass-roots movements on government enough to recognize the naivety I had thinking I could get something done.

Our government is a reflection of us. Always more. No program or tax ever gets rolled back or reduced. We pay more and more and get less and less. Roads are worse, services are cut back or charged extra for. Offices are closed 2 Fridays every month. Where in the heck does all that money go? Plenty of it winds up in the pocket of powerful people who aren't nice and don't care about collective good and will call the thunder down on you if you represent a threat to their power and/or money. Plenty more goes to freeloaders. There isn't enough left to pay the bills. Sad but true.

Freedom? I submit that we haven't been free for a long, long time. Do you even know all the laws you must obey? I don't. And the law factory keeps crankin em out. Same goes in Indiana and everywhere else, just maybe more so in CA. We wax proud about the land of the free and the home of the brave as we hand over rights and liberties year after year and dutifully follow our respective parties like sheep. I'm no better. I have good ideas that would work but I'm not doing them (for lots of reasons, some valid some not). If I'm not doing them I don't see the point in complaining.

An interesting byproduct of California's demise might be an improvement in our illegal immigration problem. If opportunities dry up here, they won't come. They'll head for greener pastures, maybe yours.

Ms Kelly in IN
About the rich watching millions vanish, that would really suck. I've never been that rich, so I don't know how it feels, but if I feel disgusted watching thousands vanish, then watching millions vanish might feel about 1,000 times worse. On the other hand, there might be some truth to the myth that the rich don't pay taxes. I really don't know.

The point I was trying to make is that we are in a quandry. I'm pessimistic about our ability to work through it. I'm not sure what will happen when the growing problem won't sustain itself anymore but it won't be fun. Still, I'm not leaving CA. Its the vast and varied natural resources here that we have done a pretty good job of preserving. Yes, preservation comes at the cost of growth and development. Its really hard to get both.

What drives our demise? I think human greed is the catalyst. Collectively we want more, always more. The more we get the more we want. New gadgets, cars, houses, clothes, bling, nails, hairdo, motorcycles, etc. If we own stock we want profit and growth quarter after quarter with no end. Don't show signs of slowing or breakeven, your stock price gets hammered by whom? Stockholders who demand perpetual growth will sell and buy the next thing they think will satisfy their growth and profit addiction. We buy houses thinking the values will go up forever. We leverage equity on our houses thinking values will go up forever. What do we buy? Just more stuff. We want big, clean well-lit stores loaded with stuff year-round. Its easy to scream about illegal immigrants, but what brings them here? Demand for goods. Your demand and my demand for fresh tomatoes, strawberries, lettuce, peppers, etc in the dead of winter that we can buy cheap. As long as consumers desire those and other things, producers will find a way to deliver, even if it requires illegal labor to make the math work.

The world will not end with

the fall of the U.S.A. under obama "the pretender". Just as it did not end with the fall of Rome.

Vrman
What is it about people from NJ? Have you been to Atlantic City, that hel-hole? Or how about Newark? Nothing in CA comes close to those two pits.

Eric
you live in a polluted state filled with mafia types, Chinese immigrants working at the casinos (they teach mandarin in the grade schools there, don't they)...and you criticize CA? You ever been here? Driven up the coast to Ventura, or up towards Big Sur? Been to the agricultural giant Central Valley, or economic powerhouses like LA and San Jose?

Nah, you believe the TH types. Silly people. CA COULD secede and do much better than any other state.

Milton Freidman said open borders
and the welfare state are unsustainable together. California proves him correct.

49 states
Give California back to the Mexicans. They can't do any worse.

Gosh
took me an hour to get to work this morning, no different than 1 or 2 or 3 years ago. Went to downtown LA yesterday, full of activity (three movie shoot crews, each employing at least 100 people).

Yeah, CA is sure on its way out, NOT. LOL.
Lakers will win the NBA championship, beautiful weather. We're doing fine even as our tax dollars help other states like Palin's Alaska and traitor-boy Perry's Texas.

I love LA! You flyover folks (and easterners who are afraid of earthquakes) stay home. We don't need you, or your envy. LOL.

California's Emerging 2 Classes
The effeminate ultra rich, and everyone else who serves them. San Fran and San Jose are 2 good examples. You either have multi millionaire, gay, eco-friendly venture capitalists, or dirt poor farm laborers, unskilled laborers, kitchen help, and pool cleaners.

No getting ahead in CA.
My wife works hard at her job in accounting. She ususally skips lunch as she needs the extra hour to keep up. She donates this time to the company. She also needs to work overtime frequently just to stay even with her workload. When her paycheck comes, it is divided into 2 checks because of the way her company charges her time. One check contains her 'normal' pay, and one check with her 'extra' overtieme pay. Except she doesn't keep much of her 'overtimes' pay. Most of it goes to taxes. So most of her overtime is donated to the company (her lunch hours)and to the state and fed governments. What madness!!

Compare
A supposedly liberal state that voted down making gay marriage legal.......

Yet, is close to financial collapse..........

Two interesting parallels..........

One is the will of the people.
One is the will of the legislators.

Vote NO on all May 19 initiatives.
Great article Mr Will.
California is in the process of killing the goose that laid the golden egg.
Way to go libtards.

Thomas: You forget ...
Rich liberals are not expected to pay taxes. Just look at the number of people that Oblahma has appointed.

Bailout
About twenty five years ago they got into a problem similar to this one. They got the rest of the country to bail them out so they could continue to have all their "freebies" without having to pay for them. Today is no different.

Note to CA Businesses
Hey, time to move East--SOutheast that is.

Just do us a favor a leave all your liberal workers behind--they bring down the property value.

De Oppresso Liber

Recall Petition
Impeach Schwartzenegger.
Install Greg Davis.

The HELL with them
I feel for the common people of Cali who want nothing but a fair climate to operate thier business', educate thier children and enjoy the weather. IF I were running things I would implement an ADDITIONAL 15-20% "HOLLYWOOD" tax on the fluffy, uber-elete liberal puffs who worship the socialist Obamanista doctrine. Give those idiots EXACTLY what they want. I hope every single productive person leaves.

Now thats change for a new America.

CA
What can you say. It proves that liberals can take a money making mega state like California and drive it right off the cliff. Why do people in that state keep electing democrats? It boggles the mind.

How about ...
more taxes on Hollywood and the rest of the California entertainment industry? Higher taxes on automotive use too. This way the transition from Mexico to California wouldn't be uncomfortable for 'undocumented workers'.
Sensitivety is important.

CAarchitect
Remember when they proposed the Calif Lottery, and, to sell it to the public, they promised all of the Lottery revenue would go directly to help the schools? They assured us that the schools would be wallowing in money!

Indeed, all of the Lottery revenue did go to the schools, but then the "geniuses" in Sacramento cut back proportionally on monies for the schools that came from the general tax revenues.

Talk about "bait and switch"!

"Only revolution will stop the liberal fascists."

I have been giving this plenty of thought shortly after Obama was in office at around the 2 month mark. How can it be avoided?

Through out the history of mankind, the hands that clinch the reins of power are never relaxed, nor are the voices that cheer them on ever silenced.

The simple request of those caught in it's grip to be left alone, often go unheard and unheeded. Then those very hands have to pried open thru force, just so those liberty and freedom loving souls can have some sort of peace.

Many of us, we just want small gov't that functions, stays small and leaves us alone. We seek no programs or anything other than trash pick-up, paved roads, strong military, border enforcement, etc. We just wanna be left alone...but the busy bodies will not stop.

This country is so divided and polarized, something has to give. You can't continue to stuff 5lbs. of crap into a 2lb. bag.

The statist will not stop until he has his utopia and all misery is shared equally. On the other hand, those that love this country, liberty, freedom and just want to be left to pursue his/her share of happiness. We will not trade any of it for the statist dream.

Yeap
Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada, Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Mississippi...all starting to look a lot better from this cesspool I standing in here in CA.

A LESSON TO ALL
Let this be a lesson as to what really happens when liberals have complete contol over government.

They will drive the train over a cliff!!!

I am not so sure the mindless voters will vote "NO" on this crap put on the ballot by the same clowns that show no restrain in terms of spending.

Example, who in his/her right mind would vote to re-elect the mayor of Los Angeles? The guy only spent about 11% of his time on city business during his first term.

Look at what the citizens of Montebello, CA did to themselves. In November voted themselves a 1% sales tax increase, which took them to 9.75%, then got hit with the state imposed 1% increase recently. So now in that city, they pay one of the highest sales tax rates in the state, 10.75%.

After the state increase, I watched several interviews with people living in that city...most were left with their mouth wide open, exclaiming, "how did this happen?" Others just said they would shop outside of the city. Truly amazing how people continue to cut their own throats with taxation.

This toxic soup in CA has been brewing for many years. Once many of the producers throw in the towel and head for less taxing states, who will pay the bills? Certainly not the tax takers.

CA is one big melting pot
But you might say that one or two ingredients in the soup are outflavoring the rest. I don't mind the diversity but not at the cost my kids have to pay. CA spends more per child than almost all other states, but at my kids' school we don't have PE, Art, music, science, playground equipment, etc. unless the parents pay for it. The parents at our school have to fundraise to earn money for those things. My sister in the midwest has everything at her school, and it costs here nothing (except property taxes).

Where is all the money going? Don't keep voting for bond measures and tax increases. The money is NOT getting to the schools!!!

Mostly Correct Analysis
There can be no doubt that Liberal Fascists have ruined California. These initiatives come from what may be the stupidest Legislature, if not the most corrupt. New Jersey and New York have a lock on that one. California arguably has the most marxist Legislature, which goes along with being the stupidest. As California sinks deeper and deeper into economic paralysis, the marxists are becoming more and more bold. For example, the enviro-nazis are now going to require that all farmers, truckers, and construction companies replace every one of their diesel engines. A great many of them will simply close down their operation rather than comply with this idiotic decree. Because enviro-nazis are insulated from the consequences of their idiocy, they will never stop making ever more ridiculous and counter-productive demands. Politics is not the solution. The political system is rigged. Only revolution will stop the liberal fascists.

Let Obamacites eat cake!
George, why do you bother or care? Let the people who support these liberal ideas experience the fruit of their labor (labor unions that is - pun intended). After all, it is their right to self destruct. Perhaps when most of the people are officially on welfare and hollywood is the only income producing industries, the liberals can move hollywood to another more lucrative state:) and begin an honest conversation (thanks Garafalo) about why this is not about a black man in the whitehouse but stupid ideas being peddled to americans as 'our salvation'.

Let obamacites eat cake!

George's one incredible claim...
...is that California has nothing to do with importing Mexican poverty.

No one who has lived here recently could credibly claim that.

Lunatic sanctuary city policies; teachers unions who want headcounts for state funding and Mexican scapegoats for the worst cost/performance public schools in the nation; perfect storm political accomodation between big industry and a corrupt government that screws working class legal workers, Mexican Americans included; legislatures who seriously debate whether illegal aliens should get in-state tuition rates instead of deportation hearings; and at least one Hispanic-only charter school in L.A. teaching white hatred training nasty, grievance mongering Marxist apparatchik's on the taxpayer's dollar; free medical care better than anything south of the border.

How has California NOT encouraged the export of Mexican poverty?

At one point in the blooming defecit, the state was down almost exactly the amount that the city of L.A. pays out for illegal aliens (minus school and jail costs).

And Prop 1A is deceptively written courtesy of Moonbeam Brown, so don't be surprised if it passes. A "rainy day" fund sounds like fiscal discipline; in fact there is no cap on spending, so the only thing that will come of it is taxation we've voted for, all going to the public employee unions that have already bankrupted the state.

NO MORE TAXES, NO MATTER WHAT
This special election was put together by the same a. holes that got us to this budget melt down place.
Most voters will vote against all propositions.
Nothing in these propositions will change the over spending.
It is impossible to replace the Sacremento criminals in any election.
only apartment dwellers and illegal aliens will vote yes.

It's not just immigration
Half of the budget goes to educaton (with illegals in the mix). Can you imagine 60 billion dollars not being enough to run public schools? And this is not counting federal money. The waste and corruption is appalling.
One way to stop the debt: spend no more than you take in. This statement is like a plague to government everywhere.

California claims to be in dire straits and wants the taxpayer to bail them out because of "vital" programs that need to be funded. Yet they start new muti-billion dollar projects like a new bullet train and agricutural water products for rice production in desert areas. A BULLET TRAIN NOONE WILL RIDE AND RICE WATER PADDY PRODUCTION IN THE DESERT!!!!

Ms Kelly, I don't think the loss of cons
is going to help California.

I agree Mr. Will
"eventually you run out of other peoples' money." - Margaret Thatcher

Californians are required to pay directly or indirectly for electricity, health care, car insurance, natural gas, unemployment benefits, food and housing for 4 million illegal aliens.

Our Governor is nothing but a teachers union pet. Our legislature lives in La La Land (Pelosiville).

America, witness this. America Save Yourselves.

The Terminator fiddled while California became the ugly basterd step child of Mexico.

Time to Pay the Piper
California got just what it deserved. The people kept voting the spend and tax Democrats in and found a "Republican" governor to go along with them. They have spent us into massive debt and now want us Californians to bail them out. Classic California politics. I heard one californian Democratic senator express shock that the last round of tax raises did not produce more revenue. Maybe Obama should pay attention to what's happeing here.

In the meantime, the governemnt continues to increase spending and raise taxes, oblivious that many tax paying businesses are fleeing to other states and the debt continues to rise. If you are not from California, don't feel to relieved. Obama will do it to America next. .

Hey Grubby,
your reference to the Body Snatchers really cracked me up. I did a whole thing on that movie a while ago that really upset the local leftists. I did it after watching some of the Man In the Street interviews on Leno, etc.

I pointed out that people walking on 42nd St or where ever they happened to be looked just like normal people. Then they opened their mouths in response to questions. Their ignorance seemed unbelievable. I tied those interviews to the leftist where I live. They resented it. I didn't care.

The bottom line is that we are looking at a population that has gone through public education in America. They might as well be from mars. They are the people who voted for Barack Obama. It took decades to create an electorate that ignorant and gullible. They are the Pod People.

Harrier
"Sure, California's taxes are high and the business climate is poor - WHY? BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO SUPPORT ALL THE ILLEGALS - THAT'S WHY!"

Milton Friedman already said it: the social welfare state and open borders immigration cannot exist simultaneously.

The social systems (i.e. SS, SSI, medicare, medicaid, calcare, welfare, etc. ad nauseum were already on a crash course before the various 'stimului' and budget.

These people are accelerating the crash - and the sheep are standing around while the fascists are poisoning the pasture and burning the barn.

The painful, drawn out, agonizing death is exactly what the sheep deserve for agreeing to allow the butchers to cut their throat one inch at a time.

The US is Next
There is a lot of truth to the saying that California is the bellwether for the rest of America.

CA is on the ropes and will be significantly worse in another 5 years and a shadow of its former self in 10. Other than the super-rich and those to poor to move out of the state, it will become similar to the banana republics in Central America. Thousands are leaving every week while illegals pour in. Frankly, the media are in disbelief of how bad things are in CA and will never report what a hell hole the majority of the state is becoming for fear of being labeled racist.

Only when the rest of the country sees the rot and decay of CA, will people wake up and say enough is enough.

How can we be so stupid to allow this. The idiots in CA who can't fathom this will wake up and wonder what the hell happened. They won't get a bailout because the US will be bankrupt for all practical purposes.

california and it's debt
but less anyone forget, calif also pays it's legislators $100,000. and more just to spend their state into bankruptcy.

Seems the dims fully understand as long as they are passing out the gravy they might as well take their share as well.

I wonder how much in perks the calif legislators give themselves in addition to the salaries they vote themselves

California
I remember, and it wasn't that long ago when Orange County CA was the bastion of conservatism and controlled politics in CA. The state was Golden, everyone wanted to move there, the economy was booming, CA was almost the Garden of Eden. What happened? Easy to see-the liberal demos took over, paid state union workers unjustifiable salaries, and spent way beyond there ability to pay for--sound familiar. This is exactly what the federal government is doing now under control of the demos and the U.S. is quickly headed for disaster. I see the Chinese have cut back on buying our debt and now we are buying our own debt--how long can that last?

JD's son
"Dude, California's too big to fail. We simply can't let that happen. Too many Mexicans and Central Americans depend on us to feed, clothe, cure, and educate them."

JD's son, I know I'm not talking to you, but:

There's one thing about a check you've earned that the welfare controllers can never give a person - pride and self respect. That's why they hate with particular contempt: the wage earning free independents who contribute to society and earn their daily bread.

Remember: he who pays out the money controls the recipient just as the slave holder owns and controls the slave; and he who takes the money is just as beholden to the slave master as the slave.

The first step to being a slave is having your productive effort appropriated; the surrender and designation comes when you accept the handout.

Let me ask on your behalf: Is your dignity and pride as a human being worth nothing? Is one more day of watching television worth living it?

Reply to JD's Handsome Son.....

"they'll have to work and maybe go someplace else than the welfare offices for their checks."

lol....you crack me up....lol...

Another predictable result...
Illegal aliens and liberals are enriching California...yea right...let em reap what they sow. Every single city and state controlled by liberals is in the same state of decline. In the name of diversity, liberals have surrendered what their fathers and forefathers sacrificed to provide them. Then, the uninformed/idiot voters continue to elect more of them. I say screw em...let them suffer.

Good conservative posts-
I fully agree withthe good conservative posts here, and hope that the good conservatives in Cal. can survive or successfully move to a better state.
One of my relatives recently left Cal. or as he calls it mexifornia. He along with other relatives of ours were raised there, went into the military, and worked hard for their families only to see the massive influx of illegal aliens. So the legal tax payers are stuck with the higher taxes to pay for these illegal parasites and their anchor rats. He told me that if, in his opinion, that the rest of the USA doesn't take notice soon that we will all look like mexifornia.
So if this shamnesty takes place, we all know what will happen. I think that all conservatives can agree on that.

Lights out
Would the last to leave please turn out the CFLs.

Who cares if the current host dies? Parasites always find new hosts to infect.

Mike and hoodaticus
I wish you luck, but it's not all about you. It's not even about those suckers you speak of. It's about the wealthy who are footing the biggest part of the bill.

Middle class people don't know what it is like to see millions of dollars vanish into thin air. Oh sure, we have had our 401K's hit hard, but most of us never know the sinking sick feeling of watching $50 million dollars disappear. We hear about such things, and it’s all just numbers to us, but to those who lose it, it’s real money that they did have and don’t have anymore.

The people who have the big money will not stay and allow California, no matter how great, to ruin them. And when they are gone (and they WILL be gone) there will not be anyone left to pay.

Then, everything that makes California such a wonderful place to live --clean water, good roads, nice parks and public spaces, will be gone and you will have a huge Mexican ghetto.

Ever been to the poorest areas of Mexico? Mexico has the same great weather and beautiful beeches that California has, and people can’t get out fast enough.

phase & faze
Why are so many people oblivious to the meaning of sound-alike words? This example has been repeated at least a few times lately. The words are Not interchangeable.

Harrier
You are absolutely right!!

As is the case
with most of those on the left, they don't care about outcomes. They only care about power.

The entire economy of California could fall of into the ocean and it wouldn't make a bit of difference to the Libs.

Our nations newspapers along with much of what passes for entertainment out of Hollywood are good examples. Even though revenues have been lost, people are turning off their television sets more and more and the newspapers are about to go bankrupt, it does not phase the Libs who insist on pushing their agenda on a country that is closely split between liberals and conservatives.

Expecting a liberal to have the sense of a mule is wishful thinking.

Summers
Many of us here have been telling the Government several years now to send them back, but the vote from these
people is more important than anything they could imagine.
We had a great Country and are now headed towards a third world status.

Very disgusting!

hoodaticus
if calif is so awesome why is your state gov't begging for bailout money from the feds, in other wards the rest of america.

And with your $42 billion this year, why shouldn't we think you will come begging every year, expecting america to help fund your penchant for socialism and rewarding every loser that takes up residence in your state which has more concern for illegals, losers and the sexually confused than for the citizens who are footing the bills for your grand give aways that never end.

And as for being awesome, it is particularly wonderful to drive through the central valley and see the yellow air people are breathing.

The problem for calif remains that the confused and the disenchanted continued migrating west until they ran into the pacific ocean. Now they find that the problem is the state gov't that ca n't stop spending money and seeing how many workers in the state can end up as state employees or recipients of more handouts from socialistic sacremento

No Way
Dude, California's too big to fail. We simply can't let that happen. Too many Mexicans and Central Americans depend on us to feed, clothe, cure, and educate them.

We've got to bail California out. Midwesterners and others have too much and they must share. We'll have to take their money and give it to California.

The Hearland of America is just going to have to accept a lower standard of living, lower horizons, and do more with less. They can do it. I know they can. They've had too much luck in the lottery of life and it's time to make things more fair for California residents.

Why should Californians do without the things that are rightfully theirs? Dude, it we don't bail them out, they'll have to work and maybe go someplace else than the welfare offices for their checks. Dude, this can't happen, man!

hoodaticus
Did you happen to read how much debt your state has? Your state is the harbinger of the entire country of America after eight years of Oblaba. I remember when Californians led the way in fiscal responsiblity with Prop 13 and the recall. You've allowed the gays/illegals/celibs/dims dictate and now like one of their proud spokesmen based in Chicago might say,"The CHICKENS----have come home to roost!"

It's the Immigration Policy, Stupid!
Incredibly, or maybe not (this IS George Will, after all), there's nary a word about our country's immigration policy in this article. Our porous border, welfare, driver's licenses and free medical care are what's driving California to bankruptcy. Not some overwrought droning about tax law. Sure, California's taxes are high and the business climate is poor - WHY? BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO SUPPORT ALL THE ILLEGALS - THAT'S WHY!

But!
Sure they can leave California, but PLEASE Do NOT Come to Nevada, we have enough problems of our own! We have Harry Reid.

Mike I'm With You - California ROCKS!
Born in Tennessee, raised in Florida, and lovin California! It's simply the best state. Everything you can get in any part of the country you can get here, near the beach.

California truly is an awesome land and its people LOVE LIFE and are active and fun. You have canyons and forests and redwoods and skiing and camping and deserts and beaches and rocky beaches and islands and Mexico. You have the pride of knowing that your state is at the forefront of technology; indeed, of human civilization in all of history.

Props to the South because Dixie culture RULES, but the California lifestyle is the Pinnacle. The best place to live in the best country in history in the best part of its history. Go West, young man, Go West.

So true
All of it, Mr. Will. And we fully intend to vote those props down, trust me. Businesses and families are leaving California in droves. We are being taxed and fee-ed to death here and no one wants to cut back or sacrifice. Liberalism is destroying this state. It's been happening for many years. The wolves are now at the door. We are reaping what we have allowed liberals to sow

LD35
Ronald Reagan was knuckle-headed enough to sign an amnesty. It only encouraged more illegals to come in. Another amnesty will be no different.

No jobs, no housing, no welfare checks and they will go back the same way they came.

A big chunk
of Ca's spending is on illegals. That alone runs the State in the red.
In one county the 'takers' outnumber the 'givers' 63% to 37%. ???

But have no fear cause Soros's puppet Obama, will have the stimulus package there in time.

In the news this morning Obama claims his stimulus has already created 150,000 jobs and believes that another 10 or 12 trillion will have the Country on a roll.

The producers of the 'monopoly game' are pleased to have been asked assist in printing the money.

Taxes
BO is a smart Marxist, his desire is for the entire US/Federal Government to become a third world country so all the popualtion of the world will be equal. Read his mentor,Sal Alinzke and James Cone. You will see BO and his plans.
The mentally disordered Bush/Fox hate America left and media will enable BO along the way until the US is CA.
My county is being destroyed! What can we do?

California is the future of the USA
Four years from now or less the USA will look like California or worse if we have amnesty for illegal aliens and a little longer if we don't secure the border and start enforcing our immigration laws. Who actually believes that it is a coincidence that California has the highest deficit in the country despite the highest taxes, the most illegal aliens, (percentage and overall total) the most violent gangs, the most minimum wage earners, and the most high school dropouts! As taxes are raised all tax payers suffer a drop in standard of living which will continue to drop as illegal aliens increase!! America better wake up NOW!!

Mike
'Enough of us feel that way, so California will always have a nice base of suckers to draw from. I hope for an implosion of our state government, but the solution could be even worse.'

Trouble is you're running out of suckers i.e. those who pay.

The republican party in CA is just about a joke: it is ossified with decrepit leadership, leftovers from the ones who've already left. It is willing to compromise on any political front but one - prop 13, property tax.

Oh, I'm not saying the legislators don't fight hard against the taxers in Sac - that's what keeps their contributions rolling in. BUT, in most cases, what the local GOP has come down to (and all politics is local) is organized resistance to messing with Prop 13.

The funny thing is that the GOP's failure to fight on the other fronts has weakened it to, and created the conditions for, being flanked - sort of like the German's at Stalingrad.

And then the fascists will get the property tax they want - or the property.

Born in Cal. & wished I was still there
I lived in Pismo Beach and went to school there, born in San Luis Obispo. When my folks moved us to Utah I about flipped. I love California. The view of Zion National Park is not a bad deal here.

But; I went back in August for a glass bead makers convention in Oakland. I had to cut three days off my trip due to under estimated taxes. My budget didn't count in 13% tourist tax. Lord knows what it is now.

NewDeal
It is a shame that none of the columnists here want to make people aware of the gang problem that we have in this country. While California has certainly suffered from it, no state is exempt.

why is California so expensive?
Answer: because its worth it.

True, I really wish we were in better shape, had lower taxes, more freedom, supported fewer deadbeats, etc, etc... But the grim reality is that I won't leave. I've traveled all around this amazing country and California is my place. Not the cities North and South, the vast open spaces between. Most people don't know that outside of metro areas California has massive rural spaces and folks are pretty conservative.

So, I'll continue to vote, have my vote defeated by hardcore lefties and the sheep that follow them, and just go right along living here and paying whatever they say I have to. If the choice is between obeying laws I disagree with and leaving California, I'll continue to grudgingly obey the dumb laws, pay the government thieves, and live my life the way I always have. It sucks but its still worth it.

Enough of us feel that way, so California will always have a nice base of suckers to draw from. I hope for an implosion of our state government, but the solution could be even worse.

Tim
If I've made one person see the truth of these people, I've been successful. It's time to know them for what they are and insist on saying no - with a raised club in hand - just as one would do to feral, out of control children.

CA state employees benefit while we pay.
Ironically, the liberal state legislature has handed California's state employees' unions an additional bone. As a member of a teachers credit union I recently received an brochure in the mail for retirement services in which I was informed of NEW changes just enacted regarding state pensions... It seems that in the recent compromise on the state budget, state and school government employees were granted additional pension benefits and entitlements which allow state employees to take advantage of new programs which will increase their retirement accounts (having fallen so precipitously over the past year) as well as other benefits 'without working additional hours or contributing any additional moneys'. CLEARLY, a 'kiss' from the liberal legislature for the unions at the expense of additional taxes burdening the rest of us in order to bolster the most powerful unions anywhere in the country... CalPers and Cal Teachers Union.

1a - 1f 'Just one more fix...'
The junkies last refrain. That's what Ahnold and and the spending addicts promise here - one more huge tax increase and we'll quit, promise, cross my heart, hope to die...

More lies from congenital liars. They no more intend to quit spending anymore than the junkie intends to stop using.

They have no appreciation for the value of the money they had no part in creating - they are sick, twisted, criminal power mongers who steal everything in sight: individual liberty, choice, freedom, productivity, claims on the productivity of others, fairly earned leisure time, life and health.

They will never admit to their meglomania but merely refer to their corruptly attained legal 'authority' to do as they will.

Some day, their reams of law and code will not save them from justice.

I see no victims in this quote:

You can not bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You can not strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You can not help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
You can not further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred.
You can not help the poor by destroying the rich.
You can not keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.
You can not build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence.
You can not help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.

Abraham Lincoln

Didn't this state start out as a......
Spanish Catholic mission? What happened? The Gold Rush? Hollywood? Environmentalism? Too bad to see 1/8 of the US population taken down by liberal insanity. Is this a portent of the entire US of the future with the liberal-provoked overspending now going on in DC?

NOONE can talk "Bush bailouts" to me. EVER. The reason? From January 2007 until and including the present time, the Democrats have had the majority in the House. ALL money measures must be be originated in and passed by the House. Nuff said.

mauricio
I'm no a victim, nor is Sarah Palin. Her life is under a microscope.
I have never considered myself a victim. When I was a single mother and a democrat I thought I was, then I grew up, pulled myself up and quit blaming all my problems of poor life choices on other people.

Thought you guys loved victims? So much easier to use. Why do go for nasty when so one disagrees with you. As you will notice I used your full screen name out of respect for you as a person.

Socialism Does Not Work
The democrats that run the statehouse still have not realized that socialism does not work. Even during this current budget crisis, the benefits to illegal aliens has never been on the table. That would mean fewer democrat "voters". CA has put themselves in this mess and deserves to make the choice of whether it will support Americans, or illegals. CA is a microcosm for what the fraud-in-chief has in mind for the rest of the country.

LET'EM SINK

I for one am not too happy about paying Kalifonistan taxes by way of Washington D.C. The writing was on the wall when I left there in 1983. The worst part of the migration from Kalifonistan to Las Vegas is that the liberal idiocy was in their moving van. If that’s not proof of the liberal's inability to learn what is?

Like the automakers, states that are broke should be in bankruptcy. The policy of rewarding failure will only create more failure.

Sacramento IS the problem - Saivucio
I have NO idea why one of the posters on this site would bring Ronald Reagan into this debate.

I note that you live in Florida which does not have a income tax.

I, however, have lived in CA for 30 plus years. The liberal spenders in Sacramento have control Congress ALL those years.

California a very vidid example of what the Federal Govt. is doing in Washington,DC. Spending our way into prosperity.

BTW, Ronald Reagan turned around a national economy after Jimmy "dufus" Carter drove it into the ground.

No President is right all the time but it sure appears to me that the country has elected a President who in my opinion does everything WRONG all the time to push his leftish and green agenda.

People in this country are mad as hell and they ain't going to take it any more...the sooner the better.

Onesimus and Not of this world
Great ideas since it's all going to be under water anyway because of global warming. Ok, not the Sierra.

No, No, No, Mario

Arnold has always been a Liberal Republican. He has never been a social conservative. He was elected as a Republican, who would govern as a fiscal conservative. He did not govern that way.

GWB used the term "compassionate conservative" to describe himself. He did not govern as a fiscal conservtive (bailouts, TARP, big spending). He even signed the Medicre drug bill, which no fiscal conservative would do. If he governed as a Conservative, then Obama is even more Conservative because he doing many of the same things.

Fiscal conservatism already has compassion in it; i.e., we believe that letting people keep more of their money IS COMPASSIONATE. We also believe in charity, which IS COMPASSIONATE.

CA proves without a doubt that
that government of, by and for public employee unions is a unmitigated disaster. We now have a charred firefighter in TV ads proclaiming the end of the world if the tax props are not passed.

Even the LA Slimes must be getting at least part of the message with a front page investigative piece today on the utter failure of public schools to weed out bad teachers. Of course there was a quote from Obama (a complete supplicant to teacher unions) that America must accept nothing but the highest performance from teachers. This quote reminds one of Obama quotes about not wanting bigger government and wanting abortion to be rare.

Liberalism is a religious gospel that is taught without interruption in our public schools. The dumbing down of the electorate is complete with the media in a constant drumbeat of support for the Dems and constantly denigrating Repubs for "blocking progress" by not rubber stamping billions in deficits.

CA seems to indeed be the future of this great country and we are all in deep doo doo.

Palin in getting crucified
by the MSM and huffy post bloggers and one is about wearing a coat with the logo of her husband's racing team. Why is that unethical?

They are out to get her unfairly as it is, she will never be able to run for national office again. Thanks to libs who have nothing better to do then look for wrongs. What goes around always comes around.

Great example of where
the country is going if we stay the path of rewarding the unions and raise taxes on those who make money and pay folks.

Importing Mexico's poor is a real problem that is spreading across this country.

We are becoming a banana republic; shame on us for letting this happen.

Mauricio, that's absurd

You wrote: "Conservatism is a failed ideology, proven by GWB and Arnold."

That's like saying a duck is a caterpillar.

GWB and Ah-nuld are NOT conservatives, by any stretch of the imagination.

Now... if you want to say the GOP failed, I have no problem with that; because that's simply another failure of liberalism, as the GOP has become the Me-Too Party of Dem-Lite.

Traditional conservatism, as embodied by Reagan, has wildly succeeded every time it's been implemented.

George, Great Column
I live in CA. I've been telling everyone I know to vote NO on all the measures and that they are all tax hikes. I hope we clean house soon at the state and national level. Can't wait!

CA: the model of excellence
Okay, now that CA has been destroyed by activism, punishing taxation, and out-of-control liberalism, who are the Democrats going to blame? Sure, they'll blame a "Republican" governor for the out-of-control spending and fiscal crisis, but everyone knows the Wizard of CA is the legislature which is stuffed full of Communist loving Democrats. That's the problem. Liberalism doesn't create wealth, it only knows how to "steal" it.

So, instead of hearing "the failed policies of the last 8 years," (of which I'm still waiting to hear just "what" those policies were?), I want to know "what" the briilliant successes were given the failure of CA? Liberalism did not succeed; it has been proven the failure we conservatives have been opining about for decades.

Where are the success stories? Where is this big economic boom dear liberals? What happened? High taxes are supposed to be the answer. IF those damn evil businesses would just pay their fair share everything would be gravy.

What happened CA? What happened Democrats? People FLEEING CA should be a hint that liberalism doesn't work(I guess they're all rightwing extremists).

CA "should" be the campaign slogan for the GOP's revival and the WARNING signal of things to come for the entire country now that the Communist-in-Chief is running the ship aground.

Illegals Not CA's Fault?
California's sanctuary city policies have certainly made the economic impact of the federal government's failed border security more severe!

George Will is not entirely correct on this point, as the economic impact of those here illegally approaches $30 Billion annually (net CA expense after accounting for economic benefits of their labor).

But, if CA voters want to help out Mexico, it's the liberal way! Screw the U.S. children!

Tim, very good comments!

Liberals won't understand a single word.

They're pretty 'Dim'.

Nagin v. Biden

Yes, Nagin was the manmade disaster of New Orleans after Katrina made landfall. And, of course, the Chocolate City Mayor is still an unmitigated disaster.

But, look at Biden. After his panic-mode interview concerning Swine Flu, countries around the world urged their populace not to visit the US (in a deep recession, no less). And, Egypt ordered the slaughter of 300,000 pigs. Now, it is contemplating the slaugher of every pig in the country and the pig farmers are protesting in the streets.

Where is PETA, who only a few days ago applied for a permit to set up a PIG STY NEXT TO THE CAPITOL? They wanted to let the pigs muck up the sty, remove the pigs, blow up the sty so that it covered the capitol, just to proved that pigs did not cause the Swine Flu.

To tell you the truth, I have decided not to eat sea-kittens or meat in their honor. Pigs near the pork factory. Perfect, indeed.

grubby - I never thoguht of it that way
I believe that you are absolutely right. I bought into the "feel good" crap of helping folks. But as I read your post, it really all comes down to power. As long as they control everything, they are happy. I have listened to people on welfare talking about, if I could just work and not lose all of my benefits, I could get ahead and get off welfare. But, as soon as they get a few dollars from outside of the system, they lose all of the benefits, so it is better to keep the medical and food stamps, etc. than to go get a part time job that can lead to something better.

It is just more of the lies of liberalism. They don't want to help people, they want to control them. They will espouse tolerance for every deviant type of behavior, yet if you ever disagree with them on anything, they will attack you with such force it is unbelievable. This episode with Miss California is a prime example.

Here's the best one.

Biden said, "Run for your life!!!"

What he meant was, "Jogging is good for your health."

California out of control
I just moved back to SF and can't believe the ridiculous spending and policies. While driving into the state, Arnold just negotiated with the state's largest union, (i believe 95,000 employees), for the next 5 years no layoffs and no unpaid days. The state has over 10% unemployment, couldn't they take some of the hit? I guess that's 95000 votes for Arnold.
Parking meters in SF were $.25 for 10 mins. That wasn't bad enough, now they are $.25 for 6 mins. Gas,(already the highest in the Country just got taxed another $.20 per gallon. But the ridiculous spending just keeps getting worse. All Buses now have recorded messages telling you what stop it is. I Believe that cost $100 million for SF alone. I guess the bus driver was too busy to call out the stop. They just doubled the car tax. The list just keeps going. The sad thing is that people here don't realize that only they have this kind of crap going on.

Me? I'm keeping my residency in SC. So Arnold...you'll have to get your money from someone else.

Rob, LA
GREAT POST.

But where are all the liberals. No one is defending California. Are they starting to see the truth.Maybe.

Rob from Louisiana

Thank you.

You are right about Liberals not defending California, except, of course, Mario, who argues that Arnold governed as a "Conservative". He has never been a "Conservative".

Of course, I don't believe that they are ready to admit they are wrong. They believe that:

1) They didn't spend enough quickly and need to spend more. (Sound familiar? Yes, just like DC)

2) And/or, the bailout funds will magically solve their problems so that they do not have to deal with the cancer.

3) And/or, they like paying higher taxes because the number of non-paying Citizens is growing and results in a higher tax burden for a diminishing number of people.

4) And/or, a new green economy will restore its financial solvency.

5) And/or, if they keep trying the failed policies, they will eventually work.

For the state that delivered
Ronald Reagan to the country, you have to ask, How did this happen?

The criminals in the legislature have gerrymandered the state legislative and Congressional districts to turn nearly every district into a "safe" district. In the last several elections, the only districts to change incumbents were those that were (1) where the term limits 'termed out' the incumbent or (2) where the incumbent decided to retire on a magnificent pension provided by the tax payers.

Even in the cases where there was a change in representation, it never changed the party controlling the seat.

The taxpayers are totally screwed.

Sure, conservatives are the problem
mauricio, how typical of a moonbat liberal. You blame conservatism, then reference Arnold and Bush. Neither of them governed very conservatively. That is why you folks just don't learn. You can't add 2+2 and come up with 4 for an answer.

Do you remember what happened shortly after Bush took office, in a recession? The 9/11 event happened and destroyed the economy even more than it was already. Even with that, we managed to grow the economy by around 5% for a few years after the tax cuts took effect. Bush spent way too much money, that is for damn sure. But that spending policy was not conservative, and you blamed conservative, not Republican.

You might want to remember the Clinton loyalists that claim he balanced the budget. Remember how it was a conservative Congress that actually put that budget together. Clinton vetoed it twice, and then Dick Morris convinced him to sign it the third time because he wasn't going to win that battle. So he finally signed it, and now takes credit for the results.

Most of the additional receipts to the treasury are due to cuts in taxes on productive people, and the fact that they use much of that money to invest and grow their companies and so in doing that they create more jobs and income, which gets taxed. It is a very simple, almost automatic response. But, loons, such as yourself, will never understand that.

Mauricio
Its funny you are quoting Davis' recall. If you remember he was recalled for fiscal irresponsibility that Arnold campaigned not to do. Now here he is exponentially increasing the budget that has us begging for the days of Gray Davis.

Skip in MT
"The person who posted #3 was right. They are coming from California in droves into Montana. Some of these people came to escape that communist sewer. Others came to bring that filthy ideology to Montana."

There's no question that the the emigres are not content to leave their destruction behind - they continue to destroy wherever they go.

For all good lib fascists, individual liberty and freedom is never a goal - their power and control is.

The 1956 movie 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' was a good metaphor for CA (and even considered as one for communism at the time), only unlike the movie, the seed pods got out.

California is a great example
of why we should fiercely protect and adhere to the tenth amendment. If the states rejected unconstitutional federal mandates (and gave up the handouts) we would have 50 different states attacking the problems of today. Some would succeed and serve as an example for others to follow. Others would fail and serve as a warning. In between, the best and brightest minds would find the answers that simply cannot come from Washington, D.C. either for a lack of knowledge on the part of Congress and the administration (how many ever ran a business?) or simply due to the fact that regional interests cannot be addressed by national "solutions".

mauricio
so how do you explain California's prosperity during the years when that evil conservative Ronald Reagan was governor?

Leaving aside the dubious proposition that Arnold is a conservative--hey, I still love his movies--CA was in the tank before he ever showed up, enough so that his predecessor Gray Davis was recalled. And the exodus of actual working people from CA started probably in the late '80s.

Liberal Fascism is about Power
Tim:

"Liberalism is based on feel good attitude. It is not based on sound business practices. When you are dealing with the business of running a country, it needs to be done on sound business practices, not something that feels good. Liberal idea have been proven over and over to not work, when will liberals ever wake up and realize that?"

Liberalism cares not whether the country or its people succeeds or fails, just so long as they are in charge.

It's always been about power. The 'feel good' attitude is merely shtick i.e. a means to an end. They are not to be judged on the results of their measures, which is always carnage and destruction - only the 'intentions'.

The real intentions are first, last and always to gather power to themselves. Solving problems is never the goal. In fact, the more problems there are, the better - the more or their 'solutions' will be applied.

These are heartless, brutal, vicious people who can survey vast sectors of destruction and think merely of how it can be turned to their advantage.

The mistake was made in ever listening or conceding to them in the first place.

Earleir this week....
...I postulated on another thread that it would be interesting to do an experiment:

1) Select two states, similar in size, geography, demographics, natural resources.
2) Run one state more-or-less based on the principles set forth in the U.S. Constitution.
3) Run the other based on a European, "government knows best" model
4) Come back in 20 years and see which state is making a go of it and which one is headed down the toilet.

It's occurred to me that my experiment has actually taken place, the state in Step 2 above being Texas and that in Step 3 being my native CA, which I left just over 20 years ago.

At one time, CA had it all...sad to see what's happened there.

An interesting solution
I swear this was suggested to me by a LAMD (Legal American of Mexican Descent). All we have to do to balance America's, and especially California's, budget woes is to stop paying the bills of ILLEGAL Mexican immigrants. They enjoy virtually all the financial benefits of American citizens without having to pay for them. That's it. It's no more complicated than that.

Path of Self-destruction.
California and the nation are on the path of self-destruction. I have already voted "NO" on all the propositions except the last, which suppends legislator's pay for a late budget. I suggest you do likewise.
Chuck - Corte Madera, CA

As California goes, so goes the nation.
California used to be the land of milk and honey. Always in the lead and so much started in California and spread across the nation. But, we can see what the liberal positions have done for that state. Now more people are leaving than arriving. Businesses are leaving due to too much regulation and high taxes. When do liberals come to their senses and notice that their ideas just don’t work. Over and over they have been tried, but I don’t remember a time that they ever succeeded in accomplishing anything good for the people.

Cold hearted capitalistic and business practices are not perfect, as there are business people that will take advantage. But the competition of business will always do better than government ever will. The USA did pretty well without an income tax for many years, and I believe funded the country on tariffs. The Bahamas has no income tax, and that is how they support their operation from what I understand. Penalizing success is not the way to encourage more success. And rewarding failure will only ever get you more failure. For liberals who don’t understand that sentence, that means giving money to people that don’t earn it, such as income tax refunds to people that don’t pay income taxes. And I know that we all pay taxes, like payroll, sales, and a host of others, but the “refund” is of income taxes, which almost half the people don’t pay.

Liberalism is based on feel good attitude. It is not based on sound business practices. When you are dealing with the business of running a country, it needs to be done on sound business practices, not something that feels good. Liberal idea have been proven over and over to not work, when will liberals ever wake up and realize that?

Surgery is not the answer....
Anglers Reward indicates the state needs something similar to Gastric Bypass surgery. The analogy has some merit. If the people in the state has decide to give the critters in Sacramento a gastric bypass, the reactions will be the same as someone actually having the surgery. There is the potential for substantial weight loss (in this case, reduction of spending/budgets and services), but after a year the people will be screaming for the stuff/freebies they use to get. What happens? Just like someone that had GB surgery, they start returning to past behaviors which will lead to weight regain...in the case of the state, the return of big deficits, taxation, and the nanny-state.

The bottom line is this...the state cannot and will not change unless there are fundamental changes in lifestyle and understanding on what government is really responsible for. To start, I would like to see a return of a part time legislator and remove most benefits such as a free car, etc. Also elimination of many "boards" such as CARB, etc.

Nagin's latest move in the campaign to mke NOLA a "chocolate city" is to change the name of Bourbon Street to the Hershey Highway.

They get the Government they elected.
Moron, Idiots and Fools.

calif dims and failure
seems the dims in calif are the poster children for the failures of gov't to do anything but enable failure.

The dims control and run the schools where their union lackeys indoctrinate rather than teach and then wonder why so many are ill prepared to enter the job market.

Funny the dims can't see any connection between illiteracy and failure at life. But in the meantime the inner cities with their high illiteracy rates and unemployment rates exceeding 16% again can't understand the conn ection with allegiance to the dims and continued failed lives.

But the lefties promorte calif as their shining example of liberalism and it's love affair with socialism. But for the dims there will never be enough taxes to fully support their dream of full gov't employment and a socirty totally dependent on gov't.

About the only real leftie failure is that chucky boy shumer is living in new york rather than calif where he would be hailed as a real hero for hating america and loving socialism and enabling more failure

GREAT POST.

But where are all the liberals. No one is defending California. Are they starting to see the truth.Maybe.

Cal's woe's
Moved here to the central valley back in the late 80's. Origionally from a small rural town in Illinois. Agriculture here is the bread & butter. People are very kind and down to earth.
Traveling from Oregon to the Mexican border through California you will find much more of the same.

We are patiently waiting for the big one to swallow up Pelosi and the rest of the left wing loons and provide us cheap available coastal property.

"THE PERPETUAL IDIOT
george will stated in this piece that it wasn't calif fault that illegal aliens are a part of calif decline.. say no more...george will is not worth reading."

George Will is correct. It is up to the Feds to seal the border. If the Feds are not going to keep them out what are we supposed to do? Let them die of starvation in the streets? Get real.

Both Will Fail
Like Obama, Arnold won because of his charm, personality and popularity. Unlike Obama, Arnold does not have the political support gained from a like-minded electorate or legislature.

Two more shoes to drop
that Will did not mention. They will drop first in California then nationwide.

Commercial real estate is the next shoe to drop, then the unfunded over the top public employee pensions. Look for more cities to file bankruptcy like Vallejo.

Perhaps if the CA GOP got busy something could be salvaged, instead they compromised with the libs so much they have become liberal. Then we have stupid California voters that have given this state forty years of Democrat control. Now wonder it is a mess.

TeamNRA
Realistically it was down to either Darrel Isa or Awwwwnold.

You can talk on the cellphone while driving in California, but you have to have an earpiece.

And yes, it was the earpiece manufacturers that lobbied for the bill.

Ha! That was good about the marijuana farming. One of the reasons it is easy to lay the charge of hypocrisy against liberalism is that it is a child's political philosophy, and like children, liberals want everything and refuse responsibility for when things screw up. So in a way you're right, the pointy headed San Francisco elitists who sit around drinking Starbucks and bemoaning the despoilation of the "environment" turn out to be the same people who get misty eyed at the thought of Juan making the desperate and dangerous cross border crossing just so he can feed Maria and his 14 children back home in Sonora. They think of their enemies as Orange County white people with their SUVs and Winnebagos and they hope to tax them and their filthy money-making businesses out of the state while at the same time, they swoon with pity for poor Juan, and demand the state "do something" for the poor amigo.

Like I said: a child's view of the world.

Get some sleep!

Califorication
I know some good people in Cali. from my many travils to that state. Ofcourse they all had real jobs, and were for the most part conservitives.
The biggest problim Cali has is this. a do nothing Illegal imigrent plan. a welfare hand-out frame of mind rather than a hand-up attitude, a bend over and kiss-kiss the smallest group who cry's the most rather than doing what is moraly and ethicaly correct. And a very corrupt political government, both at the state levle and the national levle.
Untill and only intill this changes Cali will continue to sink...

Hey Renny
Good Point about all the crude out here that we refuse to drill for that would be in our own self-interest.

What is it about libtards anyway? They don't want anyone tortured even if it will save thousands of lives, they don't want any law-abiding citizens to have their own guns even if it will save innocent lives, they don't want nuclear power even if it will provide clean and unlimited power, and they want to disarm in the face of terrorist state threats around the world.

And finally the ones that are killing CA, they don't want to keep businesses by making it profitable for them to be here, and they don't want to stop with the charity to deadbeats and illegals that is driving the productive away.

They are pathetic and they will be the death of us all. Libs cheer the Dim that will drive them right over a cliff.

Ronald Wilson Reagan :-)

So Right you are!

But they -the idiot Liberals- forget. Michigan wants the same thing.

We too -our Liberals- want to live in a Socialist Paradise of few people, funding our Utopia by selling marijuana to the rest of the Country.

Oh dear, dashed again!

Liberalism is a failure.

Moving
Will wrote: "...the best governor the states contiguous to California have ever had, people and businesses have been relocating in those states."

Unless he is talking about other Left Coast states, Arnold isn't doing the people of those states any favor. In the Rust Belt meltdown of the late 70s - early 80s, lots of people moved from those states to Texas. When they first arrived they said "Wow! No state income tax. This is wonderful!" Several years later, the whine was "Back in Ohio (substitute others) the state (or county or city) did X (substitute any profligate government spending to buy votes) for me, why doesn't Texas (or county or city) do that for me?"

Politically, Texas has less of the independent attitude now than we had even 20 years ago. There are even people wishing for an income tax (pardon the obscenity).

Initially these other states will acquire those CA citizens who wish to escape all of that, but as the flight goes on the states will also acquire those who will wish to change their new home state to reflect the ills of CA.

Skip:
You are not alone in the Calilibs moving to Montana. They are moving to Texas in droves as well, and scrrewing up the state royally.

yes, but they WANT people to leave Cal.
The dirty little secret behind the California mess is that the far leftist at the highest levels of goverment actually want people and businesses to leave california. These are the enviromental nutjobs who think Cal is overpopulated and creates too much pollution. Getting rid of people and businesses is the solution, in their minds. Once this is accomplished, the remaining folks can live in a socialist paradise whose main economy will be growing and selling marijuana for the rest of the country.

Governor Didn't Get Initial Support
While Will's statistics are likely accurate, he puts too much blame on the governor. It should actually be placed on the populace of California. Shortly after Gov. Davis was recalled and Schwarzenegger elected, Scharzenegger put forth several ballot initiatives to try and fix what ailed California. They all failed to pass. Weakened by the failure of those initiatives to pass, the governor was stuck trying to do business with the lefty loons in the legislature. If the populace had supported Schwarzenegger early on, he could have done some serious house cleaning. The citizens of California are at fault for putting the governor in the impotent position in which he finds himself.

RINO-in-Chief
Had Kalifornia elected Tom McClintoc instead of
the Hollywood Plastic Man, it wouldn't be swirling he drain like it is now... and guess what the good folks of Kalifornia have to look forward to when AHH-NOLD terms out in 2010 - why, none other than Diane Finklestein !! or maybe Gavin Newsome !! I moved to Payette, Idaho
last year and I aint ever goin' back...

I won't
even visit California. My daughter is upset with me because I won't come back down there to spend some time with her. The freeways alone are enough to discourage me from another visit, but actually what that state is disgusts me.

The person who posted #3 was right. They are coming from California in droves into Montana. Some of these people came to escape that communist sewer. Others came to bring that filthy ideology to Montana.

I don't have an answer for the problem. I moved here from another place and I can't, in good conscience, want to deny the right to come here to others. The problem is that I hate to see them come. We fight them when they burrow into school boards and planning boards and become county commissioners.

We fight their zoning and their impact fees. I have come to hate the word mitigation. I also despise concensus. That is what leftists from everywhere seek in order to advance their agendas through stealth.

America seems doomed. If the president continues to force communism on the people with the help of brainwashed products of the educational systems there is going to be civil war in this country. The Tea Parties are just the beginning of the people waking up.

I am really glad that I am now an old man. I have lived through to best days of my country I detest what the leftist scum has done to it. One way or another they have to be defeated. Not countered. Not convinced to modify what they are doing. I mean defeated. Crushed. That is the only hope for the greatest nation the world has ever seen.

R: Thank you. And of course I'm right because I never lost the sense of ethics, responsibility, individualism, civic and community duty, moral absolutism, and fair play I got from growing up in the state you're in right now!

I: I mentioned Butte but couldn't think of any other cities in MT our ex-Cals have ruined since it is all the rage for superwealthy Californians to move to ranches in Montana, put on a big hat and suddenly become Western environmentalists.

It doesn't work of course, because an "environmentalist" is a city boy who went to nature camp a couple of times in his youth and has never lived at the end of a dirt road. An "environmenalist" thinks the earth is very very small and very, very fragile. Those of us who know better, who respect the earth for what it is, not what we imagine it is, who hunted, fished and love unspoiled nature are called "conservationists," and "environmentalists" are our sworn enemies.

My Take
Here's what they do in Kaleyforneeah. They chase out business. They overregulate everything. They tax the citizen into finanacial disaster. They run up huge deficits. Then they immediately cut police, fire, and education - robbing the taxpayer of the services they deserve. They do this all while giving out freebies like it's going out of style to deadbeats and illegals.

That is how they do things in the liberal laboratory.

Trouble is.......
The trouble is that all the da** libs are leaving the hell holes they created (Cal, Mich.,NY, NJ) and infesting the rest of the nation. Between B.O., ACORN and running Libs, we, and the nation, don't have a chance.

Donnie
Don't give libs everywhere any ideas.

I Have The Solution....
For California's problems,RAISE all taxes to 90% across the board.

GOT TO GO
Im off to an only RIGHTWING CHRISTIAN THING . CHURCH

Most of you LIbs on here might need to go talk to the REAL MAN AND NOT OBAMA. Whens the last time you went to a Real church and listened to a Real Pastor, not REV WRIGHT whom Obama didnt hear for 20yrs. Yea RIGHT, another LIE to the People who he claims to Care about.

SEE YOU GUYS AFTER CHURCH

Has anyone noticed lately????
How when the Progressive shill media talk openly on their MSNBC/etc newscasts that they almost let the cat out of the bag. That hey, we don't have to bs you all about actually believing in the Constitution and all that white, outdated democracy crap. You can see them stop and sort of go "deer in the headlights" for a brief moment as they realize that they just told the real truth about what they believe and that they are wondering if anyone noticed. Or perhaps if anyone is smart enough to understand that maybe they shouldn't have admitted that on a nationally broadcast show. Then of course they just shrug it off and return to the chirpy chatter with their other liberal talking head. The end may not be here yet, but it is getting close. I can hear Madame Defarge clicking her knitting needles in the front row.

Tommy is right.
The basic problem this country has is in it’s education system. Academia is now completely controlled by the liberal left and turns out a new crop of liberals each year, after 12 to 16 years of indoctrination, that then go out and vote to save the world from conservatism. Add that to the tax code that takes 50% of the voters of the tax roles, then the leaders can raise taxes for the rest.

Tommy
Don't forget Montana. This must be their latest find. Got there just in time to help the "Hope and Change" Bus. Next in line to go under the bus, Nepolitano. I predict a terrorist attack where we do a massive search for Tim McVeigh copycat.

John Lennon wrote "Imagine"

And if we read the words, John may quite well be writing about the Communism manifesto or The Second Coming.

Kinda tricky. Christians believe we will Live as One 'After' the Second Coming has arrived: No borders, no Governments, a New World (heavenly) order.

Communists on the other hand: Believe 'They' are - or can create - the Second Coming all by themselves. Creating Heaven on Earth by the hand of man.

In the end, as always, God will remind us - and our leaders - we are not the masters of Heaven.

And we will, as always, fail at this Atheist form of Heaven on Earth nonsense.

Obama's "Transformation" -His Second Coming- will fail. We will suffer greatly, our children will be cruelly indentured to Caesar Obama's future Tax collectors.

It's always the same story, eh?

Just GIVE IT UP!
Let aanold the rino, retire, let jerry brown, ultra liberal take over as gov. again, and just plain let CA fall into the abyss! And take ALL your illegal aliens, left wing commys, and tree huggers with you. And just remember ...if your going to sanfrancisco, don't forget to put some flowers in your hair!

The California Disease
We rightly castigate our insane Democrat legislature for this nightmare and we are right to do so. This is the most irresponsible moronic group of power grubbers probably ever assembled. For chrissakes, some Rep Wong or another from SF wanted to change California building codes to require Feng Shui.

But the voters put these people into place and vote them back in again and again, even when they prove to be criminally liberal.

So, liberal Californians, hypocrites all, complain and move away to other nearby states ande bring Cal-style liberal stupidity to those places like an invading virus. So far, we have ruined Santa Fe, Jackson Hole, Park City, Denver, Boulder, Taos, Telluride, Aspen, Butte, Phoenix, Scottsdale, and so forth.

If Western states want to not be destroyed by the invading virus, they'd best figure out a way to make Californians illegal.

We're a disease and the pathogen is liberalism.

Wagner and Onesimus
marvel at the examples of failed left wing progressive policy. Its usually the inner cities that lead the way. California would be a red state, but for LA and SF. Detroit, Chicago, NYC, Miami/FT Lauderdale--these population centers swing the whole state they are in. And yet fools have voted to get Detroit and south Chicago coast to coast.

As posted, California is actually losing legal taxpayers, even as the increasing number of non-taxpayers increase the cost of providing services. This is happening all over the country. What will happen when federal policies turn Nevada, Arizona and Utah into the same sort of business disaster as California? Same thing on a national level. The ongoing departure of capital will soon be followed by the departure of people. Caribbean real estate is booming. Like the poster who has already built his niche in Ca, i have nice roots here in Fl. But when the DC taxers have driven all the wealthy to low tax countries, they will come after those of us merely comfortable. That's when i depart. If one can't vote for decent government with a pen, one can vote with Bahama Airlines.

Fed Libs will try to save CA
The national liberals will not let their collectivist flagship (CA) go down without a fight. One, they will say that the nation as a whole has a responsibility to help those states in need (CA first, then maybe MI, NY, ...), and provide massive federal dollars to keep them afloat. This, of course, transfers wealth from the conservative, responsible states to the liberal, irresponsible states. (Terribly unfair.)

And then there's the problem of the wealthy and productive population exodus. That's easy -- the feds will cooperate with with liberal states and forbid businesses and certain kinds of investments from leaving the state. They'll call it "patriot regulations" or something equally misleading. (Classic facist policy.)

Don't underestimate the liberal leaders when it comes to saving California. They won't let CA sink without pulling the whole country down with it.

THE PERPETUAL IDIOT
george will stated in this piece that it wasn't calif fault that illegal aliens are a part of calif decline.. say no more...george will is not worth reading.

Forget not, not only is CA losing its
business base but also it has DRIVEN all energy production out of state, so that one of its most expensive state purchases is electricity--that's what drove Gov. Gray out of office--but it still plagues the state, even as huge amounts of crude leak through domes and fissures off Santa Barbara and pollute the Pacifici worse than the famous 1969 oil spill.

Since CA actually has great resources and the size and ec. to practically support itself independently as a nation and yet SPECIFICALLY refuses to do so even in its own self interest shows the real downside and stupidity of so-called liberalism, which is just a form of selfishness propagandized by the elite millionaire-invested MSM and entertainment goons, who film almost anywhere but Hollywood because Vancouver is so much cheaper and non-union, too. What drivel.

Howdy cousin
As a resident of New York I sympathize with our West Coast cousins. I don't believe our state government is quite as screwed up, but we're real, real close.

Watchout for George,
he demonstrates he gets it, but the next thing you know he'll be blaming it on a republican governor.
He's like Bill O', trying to keep a warm seat in the lib. media spotlight.
He says this...The state's crisis has been caused by "moderation," understood as splitting the difference between extreme liberalism and hyperliberalism...so you know he gets it, but then he'll attack the tea parties if he feels a cocktail party invite in the offing.

Kevin
Thanks for a new great conservative link to bookmark. I am bored with the GOP.

The War on Achievement is being fought..
If you want to have a FUNNY read from a black conservative Republican, then go here...http://theblacksphere.blogspot.com/search/label/state%20budgets

This guy gets it, and is a hysterical read.

The answer is....
Taxes stifle economic growth. Eliminate all corporation and business taxes and all businesses will flourish. Prices will drop at least to the amount of taxes and even the auto companies will not need a bailout. The water in the auto industry's boat is taxes that need to be bailed out. Eliminate capital gains taxes. People will take more business adventures knowing that huge amounts of their profits will be kept rather than handed to government. All government does with tax money is pay government employees. High pay, generous retirement pensions for doing what? Just collecting taxes and checking up on our private activities. That's all they do. Government should perform only essential services that the rest of us cannot do because we are working and living out our lives. Government should not be doing anything else. Essential services are: Military, Police, Fire, water and sewer. Nothing else is essential. Now you know.

TOO BIG TO FAIL?
NO--It's too BIG to survive.
Extreme obesity is a KILLER.
And the extremely obese, can't 'get healthy' or 'recover' by EATING more.
We have an extremely obese Federal government eating more and more taxpayer money, adding more and more weight. California and many other State governments are doing so as well.
Just like the human body, there comes a point, the fine line, and when it's crossed there is 'total system failure' and all internal organs shut down.
Unless the American people realize and recognize the FATAL condition of our Federal and State governments, and demand they undergo a surgical GASTRIC BYPASS, we can all kiss our own fat behinds 'goodbye'.

arnold
Just another RINO,except his wife is prpbably running the show. The repubreputation is bad enough, but he is really soiling the repub diaper.

"More Is Not Enough"
My subject is the true motto of all the people of the USA. When one digs under all the baloney, there it is -- picking on California will not change that. California is merely letting the rest of us know where we are headed.

"More Is Not Enough" worked well for Rome, with her powerful, conquering legions. The conquering armies idea worked less well for Great Britain, though not by much.

Talk, talk, talk, I don't believe will sustain "More Is Not Enough." No, only legions can do that. And, so far, humans have found no other way. Basically, we are talking ourselves to death.

Who cares?
Real Americans hate California anyway. Don't they? Maybe the real americans left in Cali can move to real American Arkansas and Nebraska.

good for them
The liberal a@#WIPES in california say they love the poor dirty illegal aliens so much, so adopt 'em all and pay for them too. I hope Arnold and all the hollyweird jerks flame out.
They are reaping what they sowed, and that's a good thing. Yep, they mock God, and hate us Christians, and so they now live outside of God's protection and you see how good that is right? Well, too bad, so sad. We told them not to mock God and mock us. Hey libs, good luck with that anti-God lifestyle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sound familiar?
The fiscal responsibility (or lack thereof) and political agenda of California sound awfully familar to what is going on Michigan. And the lack of the East Coast's morality has "California" written upon its destiny.

When will we ever learn?

hoodaticus
"and we're going to end up electing a new one here if the legislature keeps raising our taxes."

No, they need to be replaced for what they already have done.

BTW, my dumb mayor is trying to do two more things that California would recognize. #1) banning smoking in bars in New Orleans! and, #2) banning cellphones in cars.

A couple of months ago, two of our hired Department heads resigned in the middle of the night and returned to their home cities, those bastions of ethical behavior Chicago and Boston. They both called New Orleans a "Banana Republic".

Even non-smokers and people, who refrain from using cellphones in their cars, are chaffing about "Big Brother".

Liberals are slow learners ...
... that is, if they can learn at all. Their central idea - that the state must reverse all kinds of inequality by force - has failed time and time again. For example, forcing law schools to admit students according to racial quotas has not increased the number of minority lawyers. And forcing the wealthy to finance the federal and state governments via income taxes has not reduced economic inequality. Instead, this policy has driven US$ 11 trillion offshore. And now we have California's example - a state that is loosing its tax base to its neighbors due to high income and business taxes.

Despite the repeated failures of their equality-based policies, liberals believe that they are justified because the intended outcomes are just. Thus, if intent is to be the measure of these policies instead of outcomes, then liberals will keep on trying and failing in perpetuity, that is, they will never learn.

Reagan came from California
and we're going to end up electing a new one here if the legislature keeps raising our taxes. Raises our taxes is supposed to be unconstitutional here.

Balloon Head Ahhnold
Will's totally right about the exodus - people with any liquid assets are fleeing for their lives while the non-producers keep flooding in demanding more and more. As taxes and fees leap to new quantum levels, and the fascist state authorities look for more ways to legally persecute in order to justify their authoritarian existence, the bitter irony is that he was initially elected to not do nor allow such things to occur.

Realizing that his star power and deficient language skills were not enough to thwart the agenda of the liberal fascist mob and the unions (and that his Kennedy clan wife threatened to withhold his sex allowance), he did what all spineless, amoral, unprincipled politicians do to stay in office: surrender to the opposition.

Schwarzenegger is a figurehead, a pathetic buffoon, with steroid shrunken gonads (and brain), who simply occupies the governor's office until the next election in 2010. His lib fascist Assembly/Senate masters, his chief of staff (a radical leftist also named Kennedy) and his wife let him know what his opinion is everyday.

When he's TERMINATED, look for B. Hussein, to appoint Ahhnold to some obscure federal office that requires no brain to hold - just as Clinton did for Garamendi. Rumor has it that he was considering returning to the movies - but that's got to be a joke. As a box office draw, he's finished. Listening to him has made most Californians too sick to ever want to pay to hear him again.

To Onesimus and Not of this World
I have been hoping that the San Andreas Fault would dispose of California to improve the rest of the nation. That having failed, perhaps the sale to China might be workable. Of course, there would have to be two stipulations: 1)the ChiComs are not allowed to bring weapons with them and 2) they have to take Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein, Taxinator and Gavin as part of the deal!

Case In Point
California just makes the case for why bigger government does not work. They always say they are in the forefront of the rest of us, well...they have proved it by going down the crapper. The governor became governor because he promised lower taxes and then turns around and does worse with bigger government. But don't worry California, Illinois is right behind you.

Not of this World
I like your idea. I also would like to recommend Reid, Pelosi, Frank, Frankin, Huffington, Soros, Dodd, B.O.and Emmanual criminals to the new nation. And if they set one foot over the line, they will be sent to the new nation's prison for life.

California or Katrina
California created a fiscal disaster. Parts of the Gulf Coast were devasted by a natural disaster.

Louisiana, as a whole, has begun to recover and even added jobs in March, the only state to have done so. Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, one of the causes of the manmade distaster that occured after landfall, did not seek reelection because she had failed so miserably. Bobby Jindal became Governor and turned the state around.

New Orleans still has Liberal, Mayor Nagin, who apart from being an unmitigated disaster is under federal investigation for corruption. In fact the whole "Idiot Box" (City Hall) is being investigated by the Feds. The City is caught in the web of corruption. There have been convictions for Katrina-related fraud; others are being prosecuted. Fraud, theft, and waste of Federal money has occured. The City has not recovered.

Mississippi has Republican Gov. Harley Barbour. Even though it took the direct hit of Katrina, it has made tremendous strides and is ahead of Louisiana because we had to suffer through the remainder of Blanco's term.

Louisiana is not raising taxes. It is making cuts. Mississippi is similarly situated.

I have argued for a long time that a Federal bailout of states and stimulus money would effectively replicated Katrina nationwide. There will be corruption and waste.

As desperate as California is right now, it does not want Katrina-style corruption and waste to deal with as well.

Geithner suggested that 10% of the TARP money would be lost to fraud and that is with the Feds nationalizing through the backdoor the very institutions. Why would we suggest anything else or even more would happen on a state level with bailout funds?

Ownership
The Chinese already have California. I work in the realestate/development world. They own much more than you think.

Onesimus
Better solution; We secede and keep our 7th largest GDP. Get our 11% we give DC back. We have food, oil, nuclear power, and that latent load of people from all over the world that live here. Many of which are smart enough to not do biz here, hence the crux. We could fix that by dropping the other 49.

And to appease the libs, we can make SF and Hollywood like a gay vatican city. They can be their own nation within a nation. Much like our dozen Indian nations we already have...all with casinos. We live in a very surreal world here.

Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.

California as a model for the country

The Dems have claimed they want to do for the country what they did for California. This, of course, before the record setting deficits and budget shortfalls.

The scary part is that 0bama, with Pelosi and Reid's help, just might bring this kind of California stagnation to the US economy with the "spend without limits first, worry about paying the bills later" approach to running a government.

California...New York...Michigan...
...has anybody noticed that the states run by liberals, for liberals, are epic economic disasters?

High taxes, high unemployment, high budget deficits, high exodus rates...perhaps this should give us a clue or two about what to do--and what NOT to do--nationally. Just a crazy thought.

ps...
As I wrote the last thread, I had the local news on. BO is coming back to Beverly Hills May 27 to hobnob with the A list.

That ought to be an interesting spectacle. At his last stop in LA, He talked about Obama in the third person? Like he was explaining a character on tv...or kabuki theatre?

Its Frustrating
I have lived here most of my life. Thankfully, my niche is carved out into the coastline south to central Cali. There will always be a latent load of our beautiful coast. The red tape to be here...10 miles high. 49th Biz friendly state.

As we friends lament often...Its amazing how the politicians can screw it all up when so much money was coming in (we are one of the biggest GDPs in the world).

One thing that hasn't helped, we give DC about 10-12% we don't get back. No one ever talks about that Tax much. California is a cash cow for DC. You'd think Princess Nancy and the senate sisters could have fixed that by now? It was the only reason I thought I could tolerate their place. And they failed that.

If this is a harbinger of whats to come nationally , I'd rather move West into the water as dolphin. I envy them...sushi,surfing, socializing, and sex (One of the few mammals that do it for fun)...and no "pockets" for money. Life should be that simple.

1 perfect solution for 2 problems!
Let's give California to the Chinese as repayment for all the money Bush and Obama have borrowed.

Sacramento won't even have to change its political philosophy.

That is the funny thing.
California is a disaster. The progressive model has failed and you still find people that want it and defend it. What will it take for people to pull their heads out of their .....? I wish that southern California could separate from northern California. Unfortunately, I have doubt that this would work. The progressives would move out of their cesspool that they created and try to "change" the model that actually works. They are so smart-just ask them.

IT DON'T MATTER
THE BLACK TAXER will have the hole country looking like california by 2017.

Just One Time!
Tell me of one thing the government, or any governmental agency, (other than the military) has ever done that has profited society at large. Tell me how said agency or government organ has empowered and made more profitable a private/individual concern outside corruption. Government creates NOTHING! It takes, then it takes more, then more, until nothing is left but the government. Bye-bye CA., we once loved and tried to emulate your freedom loving, open lifestyle. Now the rest of the country is beginning to see it was all fantasy. You gave up freedom for governmental nanny-ism. Have a nice retirement from a vibrant world and ecomomy, you've earned it through your elected officials.

But......
"None is so blind as...."
.......a liberal.

State bankruptcy???
In the period of time I was born in, 1955-1957 the total budget for the ENTIRE FEDERAL government was 70 billion with NO deficit spending.

California has a budget of over 100 billion annually, and runs a deficit comparable with recent Federal deficits all by itself.

It certainly is time for some fiscal restructuring before bankruptcy courts find California at the court room door.
