Will Congress pass Obamacare by the end of the year?

WASHINGTON -- President Obama's government-run healthcare plan has been hooked up to life-support systems as he prepares to make one more desperate attempt to pull it back from the brink of death.

The president's decision to remake the case for its passage before a joint session of Congress next Wednesday is based on the mistaken belief that his plan lost public support because it lacked a clear, compelling message. But the centerpiece of his presidency was brought down by much bigger and far more strategic weaknesses than Obama's confusingly vague and often contradictory arguments in its behalf.

Culture
of Corruption by Michelle Malkin FREE

Americans instinctively rebelled against it because they do not think that government can run any business efficiently and effectively, least of all the nation's complex healthcare system; that with the government running up trillions of dollars in new debts, we cannot afford to add yet another huge spending entitlement program to its bills; and because of the certainty that a new federally regulated healthcare system will rob us of the freedom to make our own medical decisions without government interference and the often unintended consequences that invariably flows from the nanny state.

Increasingly, as people considered what the Democratic-run Congress and Obama were contemplating, the idea of passing a trillion-dollar-plus healthcare plan (whose real cost will be much larger), they quickly came to the conclusion that this did not make any fiscal sense.

Last month, the White House said the government will run a $1.5 trillion deficit this year, followed by a $1.5 trillion deficit next year, a $1.12 trillion deficit the year after that, and a nearly $1 trillion deficit the year after that.

Before Obama, the deficit never exceeded $500 billion. With the U.S. economy still in a recession, and the government plunging more deeply into debt, enacting a new monstrously expensive social-welfare spending plan sounded crazy.

But the plan's strategic killer was the loss of public confidence that the government could successfully run the massive healthcare reforms Obama had in mind. When a new CBS News poll asked voters if the government or private health insurers "could do a better job of providing healthcare coverage," only 36 percent chose government -- a decline of 14 points since June. However, nearly half, 47 percent, said the government "would do a worse job," up by 13 points since June.

To say the White House's handling of the healthcare debate has been as disaster is putting it mildly. Americans have not only turned against the plans that Obama and the Democrats have put forward; they have turned against how the president has been handling the issue and the ensuing debate. He has lost his majority on both counts.

A CNN/Opinion Research poll reported last week that Americans were opposed to Obama's healthcare plan by 51 percent to 48 percent. Other polls showed support falling even lower.

Moreover, the declining support for his plan was spilling over into how Obama was dealing with the healthcare issue in general as the nation's chief executive. The CNN/Opinion Research poll found that 53 percent disapproved of the way he was handling the issue, a sign that this was also undermining his presidency. Continued...

Were the HC Plan the 'patient'...
my opinion only: When people get paid $15 an hour to protest FOR the HC plan, and some Senator's refuse to have town-hall meetings, using tele-conferences or whatever, and now BO
wants to get to the kids... SOMETHING SEEMS VERY VERY WRONG WITH THIS MONSTROUS POWER-GRAB aka Healthcare Plan!
To use some language from the HC plan: if IT
were the "patient," it would be counseled on
end of life, and allowed to die. It wouldn't have a meaningful existence. It would be
an extreme financial hardship of the families
(of America.) It should be buried with a resounding "NO" vote from sensible Senators!
We are paying billions daily just in interest.
We are broke. We cannot afford this power-grabbing, privacy invading HC plan.
Tort Reform was excluded, yet by including it,
it would save BILLIONS. (How powerful is the
lobbying for Tort Lawyers?)
50 million uninsured? Some making up to $75K a
year won't buy insurance; figure around 20 million illegals; add those who CAN get insured
thru their jobs, but WON'T, and it sure brings down that 50 million figure. As they say, figures don't lie; liars figure!
What this Congress has come to realize is: WE UNDERSTAND THIS BILL. WE DON'T LIKE IT. WE DON'T WANT IT. The Resident of the White House
is bound and determined to shove it down our
throats via this very liberal Congress.

Reform??
Why are we conceding Obama's point by buying into his use of the word "reform" in regard to his health care legislation?

Reform presupposes an improvement over current conditions. The bills being pushed by the Democrat leadership in Congress--with Obama's passive aquiescence--are clearly a step backwards and cannot honestly claim the mantle of "reform".
