Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

This convention also represents progress for the Democratic Party, which for years now has been the organ of identity politics. The old Democratic Party emphasized differences and grievances. It was the party that has been quick to see racism and quick to cry foul.

That old party is the party of the Under Convention in Denver -- the convention of Hillary Clinton supporters, who feel betrayed by Obama's nomination. They complain that Obama staffers haven't courted them -- they never call. Some of them were big wheels in the Clinton machine. Others were committed believers. None of them likes being treated as if they are yesterday's news.

The Hillary faithful at this Under Convention either think Obama can't win, or deep down they just want him to lose.

It must gall them to see that in winning, Obamaphiles transcend identity. The Hillary brigade knows that if Obama loses, his supporters will return to the fold of identity politics. They will say that Obama lost because he is black -- yes, even some of the Obama supporters who now scoff at Hillary supporters who believe she lost because of her gender.

I talked to a number of women attending the convention who straddled both worlds. They supported Obama, but identified with the laments of Hillary's femme fatales. They believe that the news coverage was sexist, but they want Obama to win in November.

Some believe that the media have overplayed the Obama-Clinton riff. Only time will tell if they are right.

ugliness

When I wrote it, I was thinking only of the unearthing of the old (but still redolent) dirt on Hillary and her disgusting attempts at obfuscation. But your post reminded me that some of her recent photos, depending on the light I guess, show her premature aging under even the best makeup money can buy. I saw one photo of her without the makeup. Tremendous, the work her inner rage and mounting bile is doing on her. We needn't worry about her in 2012.

Suggestions for GOP convention
For the GOP convention, I would like to see the following - and would not be surprised to see them - as additional keynote speakers: McCain’s vice president (for obvious reasons), Pres. George W. Bush, Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, Colin Powell, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, former NY mayor Rudy Giuliani, and other former Rep. presidential contenders such as Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and/or Fred Thompson. Some other individuals to consider as speakers or participants: Cindy McCain and their children; McCain’s sons who are currently serving in the military; Sen. Joe Lieberman; Dr. James and/or Shirley Dobson or another high profile Evangelical leader; and, a Vietnam war veteran, preferably one who served alongside McCain. I would also like to see a biography similar to the one featured about Obama, though it would have more substance since McCain has had more life experience and a more compelling life story! The message should focus on McCain’s long history of public service and experience, his conservative Republican or traditional American values while remaining a “maverick,” his qualifications to be commander-in-chief and his ability to get things done while working with both sides of the political aisle. When Bush or Giuliani get on stage, I hope they emphasizes the fact that this nation has remained safe from another major terrorist attack since 9/11 (esp. with anniversary coming up) - and that McCain is the best candidate to pass on that monumental task of protecting this country.
