Speak Softly and Carry a Big Schtick

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

My wife and I have five wonderful grandchildren – four boys and a girl. We await the arrival of another grandson in a few weeks. Dealing with our children’s children is vastly different than what it was like raising our own – especially in the area of discipline. As parents, we tried various methods and tactics to effectively influence the behavior and mold the character of our kids.

As grandparents, we do nothing. It’s very cool.

Well, actually, there are times – occasionally – when I watch my wife attempt to muscle up and scold one of the grandkids. Me? I avoid such moments, usually by finding the most readily available refined sugar delivery mechanism. But once in a while the mother of my children tries to play tough with an errant grandchild.

It’s amusing to watch. Usually it starts with a warning: “Don’t do that.” Then, the always pointless counting, “one, two – I promise, I mean it – three, three and a half.” And it’s always the same - an exercise in familial futility.

Why? Because our brilliant (really, they are!) grandchildren simply don’t believe she has the resident resolve to actually follow through on a tough love tactic.

In a very real sense, this is similar to what we seem to be seeing and hearing these days from the new administration with respect to its foreign policy machinations. Gone are the days when the mantra “speak softly and carry a big stick” was the coin of America’s diplomatic realm. These famous words were first uttered by Theodore Roosevelt two weeks before he ascended to the presidency in the wake of the assassination of William McKinley. We speak softly these days, but there is no big stick.

The stick has been traded for schtick.

The new diplomacy, advanced at every stop on President Obama’s recent foreign tour, is about reaching out, waxing cathartic about America’s shortcomings, flattering Europe, and bowing toward the Muslim world. And when the nation-formerly-known-as-part-of-the-axis-of-evil defies us by lobbing a missile into the air and sea, our voice is slightly raised, but not too much.

Everything is being tempered by a new international ethic of “moral authority.” The idea is that if enough nations will say to naughty North Korea, “Shame on you,” Kim Jong il will get – as we say in church – “under conviction” and “repent” of his roguish sins. And the nations will sing with one voice the song Cum-bay-ah.

We can all then look forward to even bigger geopolitical goose bumps as we are led toward a brave new world.

The problem with all this, though, is that a “moral authority” approach to behavioral change only works when someone really wants to change. Trust me. Ask Dr. Phil. Moral instruction requires a teachable spirit and an open mind. No matter what the motives for the recent presidential “we”a culpa tour, there is simply no precedent for the idea that speaking softly will soothe the savage terrorist or that any of it will work. Widsom: Part Three
Another triumph of conservative ideas over liberal fallacies was also shown to the world today. One of the most basic tenets of liberal thought, outcome based development, was exposed as a total fraud.

We saw that in the final analysis, when a real solution must be achieved, and when a progressive’s reputation and political capital is put at risk, that progressive resorts to merit, not egalitarian doctrine. Obama used our elite military, the SEALs, the epitome of a meritocracy. He did not call on some rainbow coalition, some cross section of our tolerant, diverse melting pot. He called on a macho, chauvinistic and conspicuously non-diverse group of white boys to get the job done.

Acceptance to special forces is based on merit. Candidates are not excluded because of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or any other demographic. If they pass the acceptance criteria, successfully complete the training, and otherwise prove themselves, they become special forces operatives. Suppose our special forces were required to lower its standards some years back, admit unqualified persons, and be intimidated like all other segments of America to ensure graduates of elite training “reflect” the politically correct face of America? What might have been the outcome of today’s operation?

Liberal ideology was utterly debunked today. Anyone that continues to espouse liberalism is a mental defective and a menace. Like flies, liberals eat crap and annoy people, further evidence that they need to be disappeared.

Wisdom: Part Two
This hijacking went differently that all the previous ones because an American crew was involved and like real Americans, these men still had a warrior spirit and even unarmed, they regained control of the ship. The ship’s captain was held and diplomacy, negotiations, words were tried first. This is the tactic of progressives: meaningless words. But even our progressive messiah, when confronted by the futility of progressive solutions, had to confront reality and use military power. This conservative response to a threat resulted in the quick and conclusive resolution to the problem, as any clear thinking person would have predicted.

But now what? Do we continue to abide by the UN’s suicide pact whereby law abiding citizens of the world unilaterally disarm and third world savages are permitted to molest the world’s commerce and extort vast sums of money from maritime companies? Will the SEAL team now face UN tribunals at the Hague for their “crimes against humanity”? Will Spanish judges indict the Chiefs of Staff for advising Obama on the use of military force? How long will America and the West have to tolerate skinnies in rafts stealing our stuff?

How long will we be in peril from progressives and their insanity? The sooner we round up progressives and gas them, the better.
