Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

When he was running for President in 1952, an excited supporter told Governor Adlai Stevenson, “All the intelligent people are voting for you” to which Stevenson quipped, “Yes Ma’am, but I need a majority.” Stevenson was hammered in two elections by the object of the liberals’ derision, five star General Dwight Eisenhower.

Stevenson’s supporters also betrayed their cultural elitism by smarmily joking that Eisenhower could not read if his lipped were chapped.

The same elitist contempt is now manifesting itself over John McCain choice of Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin.

All too openly, the Keith Olbermans of the world are making fun of Palin over things they either do not understand or believe they understand all too well.

She is—horrors of horrors---not only married to the same man, she also proudly pronounces him to be her hero. How unsophisticated.

Her idea of the out-of-doors is not a stroll through Central Park after a gourmet meal at Tavern on the Green but hunting and fishing in Alaska. She is a “Hockey Mom”—a North American sport in which it is permissible to use ones hands and not a European “Soccer Mom” in which not only are hands not allowed to be used but also in many leagues, neither is cheering by the parents or keeping track of the score allowed.

She wears dresses and high heels; in the words of an old perfume commerical, bringing home the bacon, frying it up in a pan and with five children, never letting her husband forget he was a man; she goes to church each Sunday and according to one elitist recently quoted, she has never appeared on “Meet the Press.” Never was there a greater self-indictment of the elites in America issued than this one statement.

Contempt for the “real people” by the elites in America is not a new phenomenon. Lionel Trilling, a liberal icon of the 50’s, famously said conservatism was not an ideology but a series of unintelligible grunts and gestures.

In 1964, a partially successful attempt was made by the campaign of Lyndon Johnson to portray Barry Goldwater as unbalanced. Curious in that LBJ was a notorious womanizer, boozer, racist and nest liner. Yet the elites deemed him the sophisticated one in the race.

In 1980, Ronald Reagan was assaulted as, “a grade B actor with premature orange hair” and this came from the elites in his own party. The GOP’s liberal elite then engaged in a “corrupt bargain” with many in the media to attempt to destroy Reagan’s last grasp as the ring and almost succeeded. Piling on was Jimmy Carter, who said that Reagan would divide America, “Christian from Jew, Black from White and North from South.” Carter, who ironically had come to Washington in 1976 contemptuous of the “Beautiful People” of Washington and New York---adopted their contempt of Reagan and tried to win by making fun of Reagan and all he represented---including what millions of Americans happened to agree with Reagan on about government, families, faith, community, privacy and individuality. Reagan of course smashed Carter in the fall elections.

Can anyone forget the audible snickering by Al Gore in his first debate with George Bush in 2000? How many of these elitist and impolite snickers cost him the populist and polite voters in the state of Florida?

The problem the Democrats have always to deal with are their “educated elites” and their influence over the rest of the party. Since these elites only talk to one another, they therefore think this is how the rest of America thinks. Therefore, it stands to follow that if Jonathan Alter and Rachel Maddow think Governor Palin is “tacky” it then goes that everybody in America must also think she is “tacky.”

When the Democrats resisted the smarmy elites, as in 1960 (John Kennedy always was contemptuous of the crowd around Eleanor Roosevelt) 1976 and 1992 and ran populist campaigns, they won the Presidency. When they ran elitist campaigns, as in 1972, 1980, 1984, 1988 (the “Belgian Endive” versus fried pork rinds campaign) and 2000, they lost.

No doubt that the McCain campaign has botched Palin’s rollout. Clearly, nothing was planned after the Friday announcement to define her to the GOP and the voting public. So a series of mini-cuts are slowly bleeding her, damaging her first and only chance to make a good first impression. Had the campaign thought about it, they would have given her an immediate mission or signature issue---as Carter did with Walter Mondale in 1976 (open closed union doors) or as Reagan did in 1980 with Bush (beef up the foreign policy portfolio of the ticket).

Sadly, they did not do this which has left her vulnerable to attacks by supporters of Obama. My impression is they will not work on this tough lioness. She still has time to define herself before her enemies and the incompetence of the GOP define her.

The Americans who live in the “fly over country” ridiculed by the elites are not disappointed in Sara Palin because her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant. They would be disappointed if Governor Palin and her husband Todd encouraged their daughter to have an abortion. They are not disappointed over Palin’s accused mistakes but would only be upset if she did not own up to them.

She still has time to make an appeal to the conservative majority in this country, something a Joe Lieberman or Tom Ridge could never do. By picking Palin, McCain has narrowed the ticket’s appeal and thus potentially broadened his base. A “McCain-Lieberman” ticket would not only have seen one third of GOP delegates stream for the Minneapolis airport, it would have been decimated in November, as a listless and meaningless ticket of two men who agree almost nothing. How compelling is that? The elites would have liked it---Populist America would have hated it.

What most Americans understand is that---as Hamilton, Jay and Madison argued in the Federalist Papers—this is all about character. These contests are not about whether the candidates have clay feet but whether they aspire to lead the country and address those issues surrounding the future and the future for the children of America that matters most to them.

And that these things are not just about experience---after all, would anybody vote for the experience heavy Richard Nixon or LBJ for President today---but also about judgment. They know it is not about the avoidance of adversity but how one handles that adversity which counts.

Good judgment that—as flyover Americans know--- comes from superior character.

Back in the day
we used to say "If character doesn't matter, why isn't Ted Kennedy President?"

P.S. Now that it has been revealed that Mrs. Palin's daughter's intended is a red-hot hockey player I am predicting that over the women of Canada will fall an eerie silence as they consider their own hockey-playing sons and what they have been doing out there in Winnipeg 500 miles from Mommy....

John McCain's Character
About McCain's character surplus--there can be little doubt. And this was long before his VP choice; long before 2008.

But the choice of Governor Sarah Palin speaks volumes about the character of the man. Those who think they know her understand. We understand that McCain will risk it all for his beliefs--it's the character, almost, of a Chrisitan martyr.

McCain met his new world-historical partner in February, possibly after a major magazine published an intriguing introduction to her character, her story. This story unwittingly or knowingly revealed a potential--now actual--American Superstar. I'll go that far. (And why not? You don't even know me.)

That McCain would pick a person possibly his superior in brains and character says volumes. What gives me hope now is not that she is from energy-conscious Alaska; not that she is pro-life; not that she is a woman; not that she has five kids, one of whom will have special needs (like the kids I taught in public school for 11 years); not that she adores her husband; not that she has more experience than did Bush or Carter or Clinton. Rather, it's that she has a reputation for "swimming upstream," as Sam Walton, an American Original, liked to put it.

An American Original
Like Sam Walton, who took pride in "swimming upstream" (see his amazing autobiography with John Huey), Sarah Palin is an American Icon, as of now.

The comparison is an apt one if only in terms of the issue of size: Alaska is the Wal-Mart of States--the unsurpassed Giant.

This comparison, at this moment in history, deserves a book in its own right, no pun intended.

Let me just say that Sam was a chintzy guy--for all the chintzy souls who flood the Wal-Marts around the Globe with their two million associates. Starting out at a Ben Franklin, another money-saving name, Walton...well, go see for yourself what Sam Walton created. Go shopping at Wal-Mart. It is the best of stuff...and it is the worst of stuff. We are currently in the best of times...and we are currently in the worst of times. (Someone stop me; I'm carried away.)

Bottom line: Sarah Palin is what the doctor ordered at this "kairos," this world-historical time. For the false reading of the Kairos, talk to Reverend Wright. For a hint of the true meaning of the Kairos, keep reading this comment.

Our Holy Father would approve of the Palin Family's Choice, I think of John McCain's choice, and perhaps of your choice, in November, as well!

And I didn't even get to the main point: This gal took on corrupt Republicans and won. I repeat the words, CORRUPT REPUBLICANS.

Five-starrer
eom

We must find
a way to counter the brainwashing our young people are forced into, in schools & universities.
The children are also fed the Socialist lines by the movies they watch.

Republican professors are not allowed in universities, nor are Republican actors allowed in most movies.

Then there is abc, cbs, nbc, cnn, msnbc & most news papers(our version of Russia's TASS).

It is very clear to me that if something isn't done to correct this abuse of our country, we will come apart in 50 to 75yrs.

CHARACTER
I read the article (09/02/08) by Dr. Paul Kengor in TH about Joe Biden who was grilling one of President Reagan's friends for a staff position in the State Department. Joe Biden humiliated the man while his family was watching and listening.

Joe Biden uses the same tactics for every person appointed by the GOP for a position in the administration.

"I’m referring to William P. “Bill” Clark, also known as Judge Clark. Clark, now 76 years old, living in Paso Robles, California, was Ronald Reagan’s confidant, closest aide, and the single most important adviser in the effort to take down the Soviet Union."

The definition of character does not fit too well for the Obama/Biden ticket or their surrogates.

Moral character or character is an evaluation of an individual's moral qualities. The concept of character can imply a variety of attributes including the existence or lack of virtues such as integrity, courage, fortitude, honesty, and loyalty, or of good behaviors or habits.

When someone is a moral character, it is primarily referring to the assemblage of qualities that distinguish one individual from another.

"Psychologist Lawrence Pervin defines moral character as '“a disposition to behave expressing itself in consistent patterns of functioning across a range of situations.”

I am not so sure that the Republicans
botched the rollout as I am that the rollout got interupted by the hurricane.

Of course a hurricane will not interupt the stupid pond scum of the average Kossite. They peddled their lies for several days now and the MSM ever on the lookout for good libelous text tried to find some way to use it.

Let's cut to the chase
The bottom line for most conservatives in this election is:
Morally Straight Sarah Palin is a Breath of Fresh Air.
Conflicted and Confused Obama is Morally and Ethically Repugnant.

I don't believe Obama because he changes his stated views to fit the political weather.
I don't trust Obama because he has no credibility after retracting virtually everything said at the beginning of the campaign trail.
I don't like Obama's lies about who he and his wife are in their heart of hearts.
I don't like Obama's racist attitudes, race card and distain for other races.
I don't like Obama's cold and calculating demeanor.
I don't listen to Obama's rhetoric anymore because he offers false hope and doesn't speak his own true words.
I also believe that Obama is very dangerous and will follow in the far left Carter MOS after the election.

Lack of moral, identity and ethical confusion is the one thing that insures I will be voting for McCain-Palin. The choice is clear in my mind.

Response to McCains Choice
The unrelenting tidal wave of furious despicable attacks on Governor Palin or "Sarah" as more people every day refer to her, shows what a grave threat she is to the hard left. Her selection gave the left a hard right full in the face and they are now babbling incoherently flailing about in confusion. This could very well be a watershed in American history.

Jack
Good posts.

May I add that I don't believe for one second that Obama's campaign didn't have anything to do with smearing Sarah and Bristol. He's very careful not to have his fingerprints on anything nefarious, leaves it for his unhinged stooges.

What we are seeing is the attack on Stanley
Kurtz for ferreting out the truth about his
connection with Ayers; attack on Corsi for his
book times 1000. Sarah Palin energized the base, which the Dems complacently believed wouldn't come out for McCain because there are so many axes that needed grinding. This change the whole landscape and they are running scared.
The same cut and run cowards that cause the bloodbath in s.E. Asia 30 odd years ago, the same cowards that forced abortion on demand on
the American people without their consent; foisted Planned Parenthood pornographic "sex" ed on our children on our dime; the same cowards
who said about the rapist in chief..it was only about sex, not caring that millions of school age kids got the idea oral sex isn't real sex so permissable even to this day, almost 14 years later. The same cowards who want to cut and run, and kiss up to the mullahs of Iran and the European socialists. The same cowards that have to hide behind the anonymitiy of the internet to viciously smear a 17 year old girl, and her mother.
These same cowards that smear our troops, accusing them of all kinds of atrocities in a
solidarity with Lurch Heinz Kerry's lies in the 70's.
And media are Obama's cujo's, snarling, and
attacking the Palin family just as they did the Bush family.
And Barack Hussein Obama, the supposedly all American "patriot" is quietly cheering them on while throwing them under his big, BIG bus.

two way street
"It is the Character; stupid"
And on the other hand;
"God must love characters, He made an awlfull lot of them"
Positive character: Senater McCain / Governor Palin
Negative character: Senaters; Obmama and Biden

tea party
You know, you just might be right about Senater Obmama's campaign, I felt that he would not condone the attacks against Miss Bristol, but what you write is so true.
After reading the "Governor, who's the leader" Senater Joe Blow Biden would. For sure.
I takes a big medium caliber magnum rifle to Moose hunt. They take guts and personal fortitude to shoot well.
Governor Palin has character for damn sure.
MSM: she used a hockey puck, bare hands while ...

Palin the Hockey Mom
Sara Palin has indicated the main difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull is the lipstick. I hope she proves her character by exposing Chicken Little (afraid to confront America's enemies, and little accomplished) Obama and his wimpy pal Biden as the moronic Marxists they are.

Democrats are afraid of Sarah Palin

Democrats are saying Palin doesn't even have experience as a 'Community Organizer' like Marxist Obama did, she wasn't even taught by Communist Saul Alinski.

Democrats are saying Palin never left her babies to die in a 'Dirty Linen' closet like Obama has fought so hard for - how can she understand the 'Obama Hope'?

Democrats are saying Palin was never 'Mentored' by 'God Damn America' black racist Jeremiah Wright - how can she understand the plight of the ordinary black American?

Democrats are saying Palin is a Capitalist and was never trained by Marxists like Obama - how can she bring the 'Obama Change' to America?

Democrats are saying Palin never voted present 129 times - how can she bring the political experience Obama has to the White House?

Democrats are saying Palin doesn't understand the 'Bitter Clingers' like Obama - the typical whites who cling to 'God and Guns'.

Democrats are saying Palin doesn't even have 'Cult Followers like Obama, who believe Obama is the messiah and will heal the world.

Democrats are saying Palin has a husband who has always been proud of America, how can she understand those like Michelle Obama who was never proud of America.

Democrats are saying Palin thinks babies are wonderful how could she understand the 'Baby Mistakes' Obama talks about.

Democrats are saying Palin has worked at real jobs, how could she understand the plight of Obama who has never had a 'real job'.

Democrats are saying Palin might bring real values to America not the phony ones they believe in - Democrats are afraid!

CAMBELL BROWN ON CNN-
HER GREAT GRAND DAD MUST BE JIMMY CARTER,WOW SHE HATES THE REBUBLICANS.I AM SO,GLAD PRESIDENT REAGAN WON.AND JIMMY CARTER LOST.DID YOU KNOW JIMMY CARTER GAVE YASIR ARAFAT,THE PLO DUDE,THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE.AND OL BILL CLINTON,LOVES JIMMY CARTER.MCCAIN-PALIN GET MY VOTE!

No you don't, Craig Shirley!

By attempting to shift and keep the focus on Sarah Palin, it's quite obvious Town Hall columnists -- and the McCain camp -- want to keep attention away from John McCain's longtime vulnerability - his uncontrollable, incendiary temper.

A temper which Amanda Carpenter wrote about in her April 1, 2008 column, 'MCCAIN ADMITS TEMPER PROBLEM." In her 4/1/08 article, Carpenter wrote:

"Republican Sen. Thad Cochran (Miss.)., a Romney supporter, told the Boston Globe, 'THE THOUGHT OF A 'HOT HEADED' PRESIDENT McCAIN SENDS A COLD CHILL DOWN MY SPINE."

Also: "Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R.-Pa.), another Romney supporter, also made recorded robo-calls on behalf of the Romney campaign in which he said, “As a conservative I don’t agree with McCain on many issues and I DON'T THINK HE (McCAIN) HAS THE TEMPERAMENT AND LEADERSHIP ABILITY TO MOVE THE COUNTRY IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION."

Last January, Town Hall columnist Michelle Malkin referred to McCain as 'SHORT-FUSED" and a 'HOTHEAD."

Town Hall columnist Mona Charen wrote: "There is a strutting self-righteousness about McCain that goes hand in hand with a NITROGLYCERIN TEMPER."

Why would anyone want to give the opportuniity to a "hothead" with a "short-fuse" and uncontrollable "nitroglycerin temper" to have his hand on the nuclear button?. The ultimate button?

Speaking of characters ...
Speaking of characters: it would really be nice if today's radical liberals were only characters and not real people! Where are the liberals I use to know and often voted for?

nmi
blowhard!

I'm thankful for Sarah...
I just got done watching a rousing speach by Fred Thompson at the GOP convention that had be clapping and cheering throughout!

This was followed by boring and lackluster follow-up by no other than that VP nominee most conservative feared the most, Jowe Leiberman. I honestly tried to watch more than approx. 7 minutes of the speech but couldn't ...I turned the TV off and read this column before heading off to bed. I have an early start for work tomorrow! (he was starting to put me to sleep anyway!)

But ... I couldn't resist posting a few words of gratitude the McCain made the right choice in Mrs. Palin, not only for a running mate ...but I hope and pray ... for the future of the Republican party!

Thank God that .... this time .... the maverick made a wise decision!

Voters See Through the Palin-bashers
Although I am appalled at the MSM and Obama supporter's smears against Gov. Palin, I look at it as GREAT for the GOP. The McCain campaign has lacked enthusiasm and throughout the campaign the Republican base has taken the position, "I'll hold my noise and vote for McCain, but cannot fully support him." Now, however, everything has changed. Finally, conservatives AND moderates are excited and getting on board. Gov. Palim will also attract the blue collar, small town Americans which Obama has been unable to convince that his CHANGE is right for America. And that brings real FEAR from Obama supporters.

Can we expect more smears? Absolutely . . . but BRING IT ON if you dare! The American voter is FINALLY paying some attention to the difference between the Obama/Biden "change" agenda versus the McCain/Palin call for a responsible, representative government.

I have little doubt that many American voters will be tuning in to listen to Palin's speech tonight that would not have otherwise. Sarah Palin will show that she is a loyal American, a professional woman and a mom, who is dealing with issues which we "common" American face ourselves. Sarah Palin has changed the dynamics of this election.
