Bush's Imminent Rehab

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- Except for Richard Nixon, no president since Harry Truman leaves office more unloved than George W. Bush. Truman's rehabilitation took decades. Bush's will come sooner. Indeed, it has already begun. The chief revisionist? Barack Obama.

Vindication is being expressed not in words but in deeds -- the tacit endorsement conveyed by the Obama continuity-we-can-believe-in transition. It's not just the retention of such key figures as Secretary of Defense Bob Gates or Treasury Secretary nominee Timothy Geithner, who, as president of the New York Fed, has been instrumental in guiding the Bush financial rescue over the last year. It's the continuity of policy.

It is the repeated pledge to conduct a withdrawal from Iraq that does not destabilize its new democracy and that, as Vice President-elect Joe Biden said just this week in Baghdad, adheres to the Bush-negotiated status of forces agreement that envisions a U.S. withdrawal over three years, not the 16-month timetable on which Obama campaigned.

It is the great care Obama is taking in not pre-emptively abandoning the anti-terror infrastructure that the Bush administration leaves behind. While still a candidate, Obama voted for the expanded presidential wiretapping (FISA) powers that Bush had fervently pursued. And while Obama opposes waterboarding (already banned, by the way, by Bush's CIA in 2006), he declined George Stephanopoulos' invitation (on ABC's "This Week") to outlaw all interrogation not permitted by the Army Field Manual. Explained Obama: "Dick Cheney's advice was good, which is let's make sure we know everything that's being done," i.e., before throwing out methods simply because Obama campaigned against them.

Obama still disagrees with Cheney's view of the acceptability of some of these techniques. But citing as sage the advice offered by "the most dangerous vice president we've had probably in American history" (according to Joe Biden) -- advice paraphrased by Obama as "we shouldn't be making judgments on the basis of incomplete information or campaign rhetoric" -- is a startlingly early sign of a newly respectful consideration of the Bush-Cheney legacy.

Not from any change of heart. But from simple reality. The beauty of democratic rotations of power is that when the opposition takes office, cheap criticism and calumny will no longer do. The Democrats now own Iraq. They own the war on al-Qaeda. And they own the panoply of anti-terror measures with which the Bush administration kept us safe these last seven years.

Which is why Obama is consciously creating a gulf between what he now dismissively calls "campaign rhetoric" and the policy choices he must now make as president. Accordingly, Newsweek -- Obama acolyte and scourge of everything Bush/Cheney -- has on the eve of the Democratic restoration miraculously discovered the arguments for warrantless wiretaps, enhanced interrogation and detention without trial. Indeed, Newsweek's neck-snapping cover declares, "Why Obama May Soon Find Virtue in Cheney's Vision of Power."

Obama will be loath to throw away the tools that have kept the homeland safe. Just as he will be loath to jeopardize the remarkable turnaround in American fortunes in Iraq.

Obama opposed the war. But the war is all but over. What remains is an Iraq turned from aggressive, hostile power in the heart of the Middle East to an emerging democracy openly allied with the United States. No president would want to be responsible for undoing that success.

In Iraq, Bush rightly took criticism for all that went wrong -- the WMD fiasco, Abu Ghraib, the descent into bloody chaos in 2005-06. Then Bush goes to Baghdad to ratify the ultimate post-surge success of that troubled campaign -- the signing of a strategic partnership between the U.S. and Iraq -- and ends up dodging two size-10 shoes for his pains.

Absorbing that insult was Bush's final service on Iraq. Whatever venom the war generated is concentrated on Bush himself. By having personalized the responsibility for the awfulness of the war, Bush has done his successor a favor. Obama enters office with a strategic success on his hands -- while Bush leaves the scene taking a shoe for his country.

Which is why I suspect Bush showed such equanimity during a private farewell interview at the White House a few weeks ago. He leaves behind the sinews of war, for the creation of which he has been so vilified but which will serve his successor -- and his country -- well over the coming years. The very continuation by Democrats of Bush's policies will be grudging, if silent, acknowledgement of how much he got right.

Since Lincoln
Bush could turn out to be our greatest since Lincoln. The courage he instinctively summoned might surpass Lincoln's careful calculations. We will see.

Love Him or Loathe Him
There is no way Bush is going to get any good reviews from the mainstream media.

http://www.libertyshout.com/apps/blog/

They are too busy excusing Obama's foibles.

George W. Bush's third term?
Hmmm....

Tax cuts.

Lots of spending.

Hillary Clinton as Sec. of State to be tough on terror.

This looks like George W. Bush's third term to me!

Surprise Obama voters!

Actually, Ranger Robbie,
To compare you to Captain Binghamton is a real insult to Joe Flynn. He, even in his role as the Captain, was much smarter that you'll ever be.

I'll have to agree with the USMC Lt., you're probably much closer to Captain Dunstall.

I hear you've been at Building 39 giving airstarts a lot lately. Any truth to that?

Nonsense

Rehabilitation? The only reason Bush was not impeached and held for war crimes is the complicity of some democrats and the many media hacks such as Krauthammer.

As for rehabilitation, of course the hacks such as Krauthammer will attempt to rewrite history. It might have been halfway easy with Reagan, but it will never work for Bush. He exploited the tragedy of 9/11 to build political power based on fear and hate. He lied the country into an illegal and disastrous war. He undermined our morality as a nation with his policies of torture and rendition. He initiated illegal spying on Americans, he politicized the judiciary, he undermined and misused science, and he tried to cover up all these crimes through secrecy and obstruction of justice (3 million emails disappeared!). He destroyed government agencies such as the EPA and FEMA, and along the way the city of New Orleans. He botched afghanistan as well as Iraq. He has destabilized the middle east and increased the threat of terrorism.

Krauthammer is another conservative liar. You might be able to buy the media, but the history can't be completely rewritten, and the tragedy of Bush will live forever.

Rehab?
It is the people with BDS who need to be rehabilitated. They are an irrelevancy.

Those of us who can view George W in an objective light are going to have a lot more to say about the future of this country than are
the Bush haters.

Two obvious upshots:
... how stupid the Bush-bashers are & how effectively Obama played on their stupidity.

Neocon Rehab over Lambchops...
Krauthammer's confusing "careful" with "continuation"...Obama WILL close Quantanamo...Obama WILL get our troops and money out of Iraq...Obama WILL establish diplomacy with bad actors...Bush tried these approaches after he watched Obama come on the scene...The real "rehab" that Charlie wants is the Neocon Rehab..THIS is the group which has been criticized MOST during the past 4 years...Charlie WANTS "continuity" so that the Neocons can get off the hook for being the biggest proponent of the Bush Doctrine in Foreign Policy...Charlie knows that Obama will be careful untangling the MESS that Bush has left him (see Guantanamo,Afghanistan,Iraq,Gaza and Wall Street)..Charlie got the assurance that he wanted over lambchops at George Will's...The Neocon Rehab begins! "Fly fly fly little Starling."

Chaney said it best. People are alive ..
in the US because of terrorist who were busted before they could act. He outlined specifics.

Look what the 911 group did to us. We are still paying for what a handful of men did. What would it be like here if the others had made their acts happen?

Mr. Krauthammer gets it right

As usual, Charles Krauthammer gets it right, even after Obama tried to woo him and other conservative writers recently. Mr. Krauthammer is one of our nation's finest columnists, if not the finest.

Noble Public Servants.
Reading Krauthammer's approval of D.C. denizens making nice-nice, I get the feeling there is much "between the lines." Yes, indeedy, none of them, whatever side they support, want to lose their power and their sense of importance.

Pundits like Krauthammer really imagine themselves as the keepers of civility among the power-mongers of this people's republic. Their only fear is of the hate going too far. They know history.

This last year, maybe the last couple of years, divisiveness amongst all the factions was approaching critical mass. It still is, among some -- certainly among some of the posters here.

Just off to one side of where all noble public servants (our Krauthammers do imagine themselves as among them) practice their doings, is the Pentagon.

The Pentagon represents the ultimate authority of our government. What our noble public servants know is, if hate ever divides our nation beyond the threshold of critical mass, it is the holders of the instruments of violent force that will become responsible.

When this has happened, throughout the history of all republics and democracies, it has taken only a general, at the head of his division, or even a colonel, at the head of his regiment, to arrest the legislature, suspend the courts, and politely, sometimes, request that el presidente, and his family, go home, for a while.

Between the lines, that is the only fear our Krauthammers have. It is not a misplaced fear.

Then, the haters only hope will be that the general, or colonel, is on their side.

Bush Derangement Syndrome
The Bush derangement syndrome is strong with this one. Everything bad is Bush, everything good is Obama. For all the elitist eyerolling they give the regligious right, they sure are suckling at His Emminence of the Left, Obama.

You can have him. This overrated library card checker (oh excuse me, "community organ grinder") better keep the policies in place that have kept this country safe, because His Cluelessness hasn't really ever had to make any big decisions where lives were at stake.

Religious Liberals like Robert are fun at parties though. You just sneak up behind them and then shout "Dick Cheney." They jump a mile.

Grim

Obama has changed
Obama ran on change and now he is. Krauthammer nails it again with this column. I noticed that once Obama started getting the security briefings his positions on foriegn policy pretty much did an about face. It was graceful and so deft that the Obama sycophants actually took credit for changing Bush to mimic Obama.

As to Bush's rehab long term, it may take a while. The truly deranged like our friend Wittle Wobbie have lost that part of their brain that deals in fact and logic so they will never recover any objectivity. But since the academicians who write history are pretty much leftists, the revulsion of Bush may last a couple generations. Examples? To most college professors of history, FDR is still the object of the utmost admiration, facts be damned. Joe McCarthy is still viewed as the incarnation of pure evil, in spite of the fact that he was absolutely correct in his estimation of communists in the government. The truly rabid cannot be cured.

Welcome The Vorex
...because it won't be going away anytime soon! Consider a man whose entire past has been hidden and censored by our stentorial press corps who cannot write five adjectives in a paragraph without breathing life glowingly into his emminences' bloated aura.
Yes, I can hardly wait...the economy will continue to slide while the printers work overtime pouring out Franklins and the rest of the world licks their chops awaiting the signal to rush the buffet, picking the bones of what the short-sighted liberals from the Carter thru the second coming of Clinton and spilling into Clintonia 3 (third version ca. 1/20/09, the Billary Chronicles)have rendered up as an offering that vaguely resembles the once powerful United States of Reagan. Our ports almost wholly owned by China, our borders non-existent, our grandchildren destined for indentured slavery...all thanks to a populous mass who refused to demand real answers and proof of eligibility from a man who would be king (if he could!)

About that "Vortex"...
...too bad it'll take 'til Hell Freezes Over (or Algore's 'Global Warming' actually does gather steam) for us to climb out of the hole the delightfully stimulating Stimulus plan is cheerfully digging for us teeming masses...gotta love our constituents that just voted themselves another pay raise too, while they were at it!

About that "Vortex"....
....Yeppers, It seems that it should probably coincide when Hell Freezes Over (or when Algore's perennial Global Warming prediction actually DOES kick in) that we will EVER be able to dig ourselves out of the unconscionably deep hole that our painstakingly engineered Stimulous Plan is creating...and we can also thank our conscientious constituents representing our "most heartfelt wishes" on Capitol Hill for also going that 'extra mile' and voting themselves a pay raise while they were at it...stimulous shmimulous...: Vibrators for all!!

No surprise
Newly elected Presidents and commanders in the military assume their new roles with a vow to “straighten things out.” They usually make alterations to procedures and policy, but none live up to their earlier declaration.

Wisdom
Charles has again shown perception beyond that of almost all other commentators. It's only drawback is that it draws out blather from so many ignoramaces. Warrior Princess seems to be talking to herself in some kind of mirrored echo chamber. I hope she keeps the lights on.

Katrina
History will show that the Dems sabotaged the effort to help during Katrina - from so-called "civil servants" to a sitting Governor and the Mayor of N.O. It's an old story: employees ruining the project because they hate the boss.

A better analogy: the pharmacist deliberately gives the patient the wrong medicine, making the doctor look bad. Eventually, the pharmacist is found out. the Ray Nagin Memorial Motor Pool is already memorialized in pictures. Wait until the research shows that if the government tentacles had been half as efficiant as Walmart, the Katrina debacle would heve been the Katrina miracle.

That's only part of the picture.
But it represents what a lot of Americans recognize, out of earshot and camera range of the looney press.

GIRLIE MAN OBAMA VS HE-MAN BUSH
With a girlie-man about to become president, a man who stupidly believes that global warming is a greater threat to America than global terrorism and that the real world war is over climate change, the he-man who is about to leave office will definately grow in stature over the years.

We Republicans...
...should give Obama the respect and support that the Democrats gave Bush,no more,no less.So let me be the first to say:...

IMPEACH OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Good Bye and A Good Luck
Good bye President Bush. You and Laura were a credit to the office of President of the United States.

Good Luck soon-to-be President Obama. Your success is our success.

The Doctor's Projection
As "Dr." Douglas proves. Point by point:

"He exploited the tragedy of 9/11 to build political power based on fear and hate."

Which is why there are interment camps filled with US citizens to this day. Oh wait, that was leftist icon FDR.

"He lied the country into an illegal and disastrous war."

Which is why he pretended neutrality while covertly aiding a warring nation and seeking an opportunity to bring the US into war. Oh wait, that was leftist icon FDR.

"He undermined our morality as a nation with his policies of torture and rendition."

Which is why he executed US citizens after a brief military tribunal. Oh wait, that was leftist icon FDR.

"He initiated illegal spying on Americans,"

Which is why he instituted an Office of Censorship to censor all US communication. Oh wait, that was leftist icon FDR.

"he politicized the judiciary,"

Which is why he decided to pack the Supreme Court. Oh wait, that was leftist icon FDR.

"he undermined and misused science,"

Which is why he directed the Manhattan Project to create the most destructive weapon in human history. Oh wait, that was leftist icon FDR.

"and he tried to cover up all these crimes through secrecy and obstruction of justice (3 million emails disappeared!)."

Which, again, is why he instituted an Office of Censorship to censor all US communication. Oh wait, that was leftist icon FDR.

"He destroyed government agencies such as the EPA and FEMA, and along the way the city of New Orleans."

At least FDR doesn't take the rap for this. Of course, since the EPA, FEMA and New Orleans still exist, this is simply delusional.

Projection (def. 6b): " the attribution of one's own ideas, feelings, or attitudes to other people or to objects ; especially : the externalization of blame, guilt, or responsibility as a defense against anxiety."

Mr. K
Thanks for the article. as usual a good read.
Loved your "take" on the luncheon on Fox :)
I wish Pres Bush the best and pray the new administration knows what the heck they are doing.
If they are successful the country will be
successful. I can only "hope"
(there's that over-used word again)

wobbie da wanger spews:
The GOP use to stand for something...maybe when the "god squad" (small g) and the right wingers are flushed...we can have the party become something again.

You are nothing but a small drunken master. The tripe you have posted on TH proves who you are.

Three questions.

1- What is your demorat congress excuse who has a much LOWER approval rating?

2- Are the demorats who voted for the war just as guilty as peso george and will you compare them with the same vigor you have peso george?

3- Is the way Obambi going along with keeping stuff and some of the same people in place the "change" you expected?

Yup, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

GOOD NIGHT CHET--GOOD NIGHT DAVID
Those days are gone.
Watching Special Report on Fox last night, listening to dr. krauthammer state the insignificance of e. holders treasonist past and t. geithners criminal past, I couldn't help but wonder what barry has promised the dear doctor.
Though President Bush has disappointed us all in many ways, we are STILL HERE because of him, enjoying the Freedom to critisize him.
Going forward, it is highly unlikely we will enjoy that Freedom of speech to critisize barry.
In regards to holder and geithner, did any of President Bushs Cabinet get in bed with terrorists by defending or pardoning them, or criminally neglect paying taxes until caught?
President Bush and his Administration may indeed be responsible for not communicating directly with the American people the factual reasons for their decision making. But, obviously they did with barry after he was elected, for barry has changed his tune on a number of issues.
It is ironic that the American people were convinced (mainly by the liberal MSM) to 'hate' President Bush and to look back at his eight years as a failure, when the known histories of our incoming leaders make a 'farce' of the government we are facing going forward.
And you, mr. krauthammer, unless you are being blackmailed by barry, are a 'turncoat' and example of what is 'wrong' with our Country.

fishy sayz:
Though President Bush has disappointed us all in many ways, we are STILL HERE because of him, enjoying the Freedom to critisize him.

BINGO! Well said. And as far as Obambi, they might try, but they will have to go very far to shut us up. In fact, I plan to be the first to develop the first case of ODS!

Good Comments With One Major Exception
Of course, The Lost Ranger will be joined by other left-wing loons.

But Charles K. really got under the skin of the liberals today. A strong conservative like Krauthammer sees at least some common sense in Obama! Yikes! Obama is actually vindicating President Bush!!! WOW!

Bet this drives the George Soros crowd (some are here at TOWNHALL) right up the wall.

Turn in your presidential kneepads, Dr K
You were definitely one of Bush's media lapdogs along with Barnes, Rush, and Hannity.

But you DID have the smarts to say McCain's pick of Palin threw away the "experience" argument against Obama.

GW Bush
My policy on Bush is simple. I actively hate people who hate him.

Liberals are abject cowards
I see Dr Douglas is practicing without a license again

Where to Begin?
8 years of BDS, venom, hatred, lies, deliberate undermining and stonewalling by leftist idiots just because they looked down on President Bush from their intellectually and morally superior white tower (in their opinion of course).

While I did disagree with him on a number of things (illegal immigration and border security for example), this man has sacrificed more than we will ever know to try to keep us safe in the last seven years. How many of us would be willing to take the scorn and derision this man has absorbed and hold fast to our principles? Unlike our incoming glorious leader, who will change his opinions and positions as often as a germophobe washes their hands. I may not always agree with someone, but I can respect an individual who holds true to what they believe, even in the face of unreasoning hatred. When you show me a liberal who has that kind of spine, maybe I'll give serious consideration to what they say, until then (and I may be waiting a long time), I'll take a George Bush over Gumby Obama any day.

Sorry Jack
As I have said before, The COW, formerly known as BHO, now know as the Citizen of the World will be a one-termer.

We have another bank holding its hand out for more of my hard-earned money and it isn't going to do jack shitt. It is going to be held by the banks while people continue to be foreclosed on and values continue to fall. How does that help stimulate anything?

GWB stood his ground and leaves standing tall and taking blame for things that were not his fault. WMD's- did exist. Katrina- not the Federal gov't's fault- and the economic policies of Bush had zero impact on the current credit/lending practices of the people who are still making money hand over fist.

Apparent "Moderation" of BHO
Before the election BHO made many statements about what he would do - and most were foggy. Repeal tax breaks of the rich and reduce taxes of 95% of those who pay little or no taxes. In the end, the latter will be out of jobs - whoops, forgot the WPA and CCC programs run by the gubmint. BHO doing kissy kissy with our enemies will do nothing except to lower our guard. They do not like us, our legal system, our fashions, our religions, our treatment of women, our easy life, etc. and will resist being friendly. BHO will decimate the intelligence and military as did Klintoon. After BHO got the attention of the libs, women and young (=ignorant) voters, he is changing his words. In the end, 2012, we will have dipped farther into the abyss of leftism and socialism.

not much potential for rehabilitation
Socalled rehabilitation of
Bush is not whether a premature withdrawal would jeopardize "stability" in Iraq.

The point was initial decision to invade in the first place, which Bush now concedes is all about remaking the Muslim world.

Why didn't Bush say that at the time?

Probably because Americans would never have supported the war based on that rationale.

So the rationale became wmd.

A U.S. withdrawal from Iraq is based on tactical considerations.

The strategy was the decision to invade, for it was designed to remake the Muslim world.

Iraq was to be the first installment in that process, and a beacon for others in the area to emulate.

So Krauthammer is incorrect in suggesting that Obama's retaining Gates is an endorsement of Bush's strategy.

Bush's socalled strategy certainly preceded the appointment of Gates.

In assessing the success or failure of Iraq, one has to examine the extent to which a Shia Iraq will work in concert with a Shia Iran...and assuming some likelihood the two nations will share a common vision, the extent to which this Shia theocratic vision poses a threat to the mostly Sunni secular despotic regimes who now control much of that world.

Will it end up destablizing an already difficult area even more?

Another factor is the cost to the U.S. treasury, as well as cost in human lives.

Most estimates have the ultimate costs of Iraq to be between 1 and 3 trillion taxpayer dollars(with the latter figure being more realistic).

What did we get for this expenditure?

Has it limited what we spend on health care, energy policy, infrastructure, here at home?

Lastly, what impact did the invasion have on our reputation around the world?

Most of the Muslim world, as well as Europe, holds the U.S. in very low regard as a result of Iraq.

There is no doubt whatsoever our reputation has suffered greatly.

I don't see much potential for rehabilitation here.

Bush haters
These guys are always behind the curve, even with regard to their own kind. Just like there is smart money and there is dumb money, there are smart Bush haters and dumb Bush haters. The smart Bush haters at least understand they are gaming the dumb Bush haters, but the dumb Bush haters are too stupid to understand they are being gamed. The Bush hating was not about Bush, it was about vying for power, position and money among the Bush haters. Future people, who always leave behind the past people like the Bush haters, and don't have some psychological "dog" in this fight, will see the advantage of an Arab democracy in Iraq and in the Middle East, Bush's most important legacy. This single success, more than anything else, changes the game in the Middle East, and though it does not win the game, it gives the USA a fighting chance to defeat the Islamists (with which we are really at war all over the world). The dumb Bush haters are just too stupid to see any of this, but the future people will see it clearly.

Poor Choices
I hope your dinner with The One will not jade your views. The One's poor choices for his cabinet are beyond belief. This shows a continuation of a past littered with Ayers, Rezko, Wright and the Chicago underworld. God help us.

Krauthammer, as usual makes excellent

points. BHO already has some of his "followers" up in arms... Code Pink, etc., so that will be interesting.

And with all the complaining and furor over all of Pres. Bush's spending, just as I've said before, BHO's spending will, by comparison, make Pres. Bush look like the biggest tight-wad, penny-pincher in history.

Not to mention that BHO has AlREADY warned Democrats of veto over bailout funds

http://townhall.com/news/politics-elections/2009/01/13/obam a_warns_democrats_of_veto_over_bailout_funds?page=full&comm ents=true&sort=asc#comments

"Tested before taking power, President-elect Barack Obama privately delivered a pre-inauguration veto THREAT to fellow Democrats on Tuesday, saying THEY WOULD NOT DENY HIM USE of the remaining $350 billion in federal bailout funds."

And then, the "inside" word is that he and Panetta are going to "eviscerate" the CIA, which has STOPPED 19 terrorist attack attempts since 9-11.

Dr. Douglas
Have another glass of Kool Aid and go nighty-night. When you wake all will be well.

Dr Douglas
Is everyone up in Oregon as Stupid as you are?

NEWSFLASH TO CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER
Chuck

What Bush has done in the past year for the economy is not a "financial rescue". In case you hadn't noticed, the mortgage industry is dead, the car industry is dead, industry is dead. This is not a rescue. This is the murder of an economy. The last year of Bush and congressional action has not "rescued" anything. It has added bullets to the dying corpse.

I don't blame you for this mistake. I know that you, a good man, have been taken over by aliens and are now a pod. Same thing happened to Fred Barnes when he said the Republicans who had some questions about the wisdom of voting for the original $700 billion bailout with only one day of discussion and no details, were "idiots". His brain had been seized by the same aliens, who must be taking conservative brains for some reasons, and substituting them with brains from Ridgemont High.

Because I care, Charles, I am asking you (even knowing you have the POD brain) to stay away from FoxNews. That is where the cranial theft is going on. Wierd, huh? It would make more sense at the Huffington Post, but brains are in short supply there. But now, the situation is the same at FoxNews, where poor Mara Liason, had to serve up the common sense but otherwise unstated fact that " . . . failing to pay obvious and significant taxes for several years is not a good thing for a Treasury Secretary, who is tasked with a superhuman task of reviving a dead economy (. . ." that he helped to kill)

Alternating betweeen anger and sorrow
I read of all the support and good will for Obama and recall the crys of "illegitimate president" from day one. I remember the brief support during and after 9/11, but remember the increasing rhetoric from the left suggesting a desire to see the war ending badly. Juvenile name calling on blogs, on front pages of major newspapers and nasty commedians making fun of the president prevailed even now at his last days. Letterman plans to have a summary of all the situations or slips of the president he ridiculed for 8 angry years.

In time, the country will remember a gentlemanly and good man who never responded in kind to his vulgar and angry critics. They will remember his helpful manner in aiding Obama as he takes office. Once again, we will see this helpfulness as part of Bush's always constant attempts to do what was good for the country and not what would make him popular.

Democrats should be ashamed of their conduct for the last 8 years, not for disagreeing with the president but for how they did it thus leading each day to a more and more divided country. Young people are quoted as saying now with Obama they feel truly patriotic not knowing how real patriotism looks because so many of their formative years were spent experiencing the democrat version of the "loyal opposition".

bush
wasn't the bush tax cuts supposed to stimulate jobs creation?just curious because clinton created 21 million jobs and bush 2.5 million.thats a pretty big difference.so who exactly did those tax cuts help?

Interesting
So Charles' argument is that Bush is validated by the fact that Obama isn't doing a 180 on Bush's policies.

In other words, "See, Bush isn't so bad because Obama is doing some of the same things."

Me thinks Charles' is impressed with Obama. He must not be as brainwashed by right wing rant radio as most Republicans.

The big differences between Obama and Bush will be transparency, communication skills, competence and honesty.

If Obama wanted to go to war with Iraq, he wouldn't make some phony narrative about why; he would be open and honest about it.

And the fact is, Iraq will probably fall apart some day. The forces pulling it apart are too strong. And we don't have the resources to stay there forever and hold it together. Of course, when it falls apart, the Republicans will blame Obama.

And stop with the "George Bush kept us safe." mantra. No he did not. 9/11 happened on his watch. He was warned, and did nothing. And he dragged his feet on the 9/11 commission recommendations like securing our ports.

Phylo out.

roy
Don't bother these folks with your facts. They have an ideology to protect at all costs. Things like reason and information cannot penetrate their walls of intentional ignorance.

They believe there were WMDs and a connection between Saddam and 9/11. They believe tax cuts for the rich increases the revenues to the treasury. The believe George Bush kept us safe, even though the worst domestic attack in our history occurred on his watch. They believe that Bush honored the Constitution and the rule of law. And they believe that dumping millions of tons of green house gases into our paper thin atmosphere every single day will have no effect whatsoever on the health of the planet.

"The big differences between Obama and Bush will be transparency, communication skills, competence and honesty."

Transparency as in his business dealings with Rezko and Ayers?

Communication skills like, "Um, ah I have been to all 57 states."

Competence as in how masterfully he accomplished what? (Other than snowing you guys and a lot of others into thinking he's the messiah)

Honesty as in "I will accept public funding for my campaign, Oh, never mind."

Give all of us a break. Obama is and will always be a hack politician from Chicago.

FYI - the fact that you are still here to add your two cents to the thread, rather than incinerated by some whack-job jihadi is all the proof anyone needs to know that Bush has kept us safe. If there were mistakes made prior to 9/11, as in Clinton neglecting to get Osama (easily confused with Obama)when he was presented the opportunity several times, I think the actions taken after have been sufficient to the cause.

If WWIII breaks out
it will be in the middle east. How it good it will be to have a democatic Iraqi ally in this area. The left continues to congratulate themselves for being so perceptive in knowing we shouldn't have gone to war and pounding themselves on the back not just for being so wise but also so kind and caring. All this aside, thinking geopolitically, Iraq will be a good ally.

No weapons of mass destruction? Come on, this is kind of like criticising the person who subdues the robber with a gun only to find the gun wasn't loaded.

As I see it
Is this not the canard of every politician who has not held the office of President to spout off:

"We shouldn't be making judgments on the basis of incomplete information or campaign rhetoric"

Rarely, if ever, do candidates have ALL the information needed before popping off about how someone else is doing the job wrong.

Do you walk into an interview and tell the employer everything that's wrong with the company and the CEO who's running it or do you present your credentials for being able to take the job and managing things as they present themselves creating confidence in the employer to hire you.

Leaders are people who take action to manage things well in the face of adversity, not people who feign a credential by criticizing those actions.

odd world
Krauthammer lives in his own little world doesn't he? Obama's Iraq policy will not be that far off from the shifts in Bush's policy towards where Obama has always been and away from what Krauthammer has favored, and Krauthammer sees this as vindication.

Obama puts someone in charge of the CIA who has been adamantly opposed to the torture policy of the Bush Administration, and Krauthammer thinks this is a contintuation of the Bush policy because he is not pushing for prosecutions.

It must be nice to live in a world that conforms to ones beliefs even when it does not conform to reality.

http://townhall.com/news/politics-elections/2009/01/13/obam a_warns_democrats_of_veto_over_bailout_funds?page=full&comm ents=true&sort=asc#comments

"Tested before taking power, President-elect Barack Obama privately delivered a pre-inauguration veto threat to fellow Democrats on Tuesday, saying THEY WOULD NOT DENY HIM THE USE of the remaining $350 billion in federal bailout funds.

"Obama coupled his threat with a promise to revise elements of the original bailout program that have drawn widespread criticism, pledging that billions will go toward helping homeowners facing foreclosure."

And as far as what happens Tues.? Well after he's spent four times as much on his coronation as was spent on Pres. Bush last inauguration (for which the libs roundly criticized him) you'll see the country take a header...

You know, like your headers off your bar stool when you don't wear your seat belt????

A Kinder, Gentler History...
Yes I agree. Future generations will look back on this Presidency (Cheney too!) as a strong leader who made many right decisions though they were unpopular. And here's a short video you might enjoy called The Fallen Obama Supporter:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtE9olkWTSI

The jury is out
I don't know if Bush's rehab is imminent, but it is likely that he will be seen in a better light over time, much like Harry Truman.

One thing that will need to be recognized is just how much a President is responsible for events that happen during their administration. One of the major problems Bush faced through most of his presidency was a lack of leadership and communication skills.

Someone earlier listed a litany of FDR policies that, in retrospect, can be viewed in a negative light. What this poster fails to understand is that FDR was a great communicator who instilled confidence in a huge majority of Americans that he was committed to the nation as a whole, not a political party.

Reagan had the same skills, which is why he is spoken of in revered terms similar to FDR, even though both have certain legacies which can be viewed in negative terms.

It isn't Bush's fault that he wasn't blessed with good oratory skills; it can even be said that there have been many times when Bush just didn't sound very intelligent, though that may seem a bit harsh. Harsh or not, Bush lacks the leadership skills required to be viewed as a strong leader that can inspire confidence within the nation beyond a highly partisan constituency.

In time, as with Truman, the personality issues will fade and concentration on nuts and bolts will be more refined. In some ways Bush will be rehabbed, at least to the point where he's viewed as average, but with the best interests of the nation as his intentions.

To loco
During Bush II Term I the Republicans, who controlled both houses of Congress as well as the Executive, became well-known for such tactics as bringing up bills for a vote at 4 AM, giving 15 minutes to read a bill before the vote, and holding a meeting without notifying Democrat committee members. Meanwhile spokesmen for the Bush administration, ranging from Karl Rove to Sean Hannity, kept up a steady drumbeat that all who opposed or even questioned Bush policies were unpatriotic, un-American, pro-terrorist, Socialist, Communist, and seditious. Hannity regularly suggested that an anti-sedition act should be put in place to punish those who criticized the Iraq invasion. American citizens were arrested for wearing anti-Bush T-shirts in shopping malls. Voting districts were gerrymandered to achieve what Rove assured us would be "a permanent Republican majority". When you look at this Republican behavior, do you still think it was the Democrats who caused the divisiveness in this country?

Now, as we begin a new administration, Obama met for dinner the other night with George Will, Bill Kristof, David Brooks, Charles Krauthammer, Peggy Noonan, and other conservative journalists. Can you even imagine George Bush having dinner with Maureen Dowd and Frank Rich?

If Obama is so transparent then why hasn't the transition team posted any information about Eric Schwartz's meetings with Dec.6 of '08 with the Washington Working Group on the International Criminal Court (WICC) and the Partnership for Effective Peacekeeping. Both entities with ties to a "Global Governing" agenda which endorses a World Army financed by Global Taxes.....

Yes, 12 years and 17 resolutions does seem like a rush to judgment.

I can only hope
that the Right keeps close tabs on the lack of speed with which the Obamameister undoes all the things the Left has faulted Pres Bush for.

Let's see how long it takes him to close GITMO and how happy the Left is if terrorists are put in their backyards or they get to pay for taxpayer funded lawyers to defend them.

Let's keep track of how many warrentless wiretaps Obama uses now that the courts have determined that they are indeed legal.

Let's keep track of how many in the international community continue to love us when they realize that Americans have lost their b@lls and will cut and run when it becomes difficult.

Let's remember that every decision Obama makes should be mocked, questioned and ridiculed even when we don't have all the background information. I know I intend to do that.

The Difference is that President Bush GOT IT! He KNEW that we were and are in a FIGHT TO THE DEATH and that in such a fight, THERE ARE NO RULES! You can argue whether how we got ACTIONABLE Intel was torture until Rosie O’Donnell, Dr. Dingleberry and Hal Drunkahue comes home. The fact remains Al Qaeda was SHATTERED and America was kept safe! Thank You President Bush and may you have a long, safe, healthy, retirement.

Lilly, how soon you forget
Don't you remember Bush having Kennedy and family over for popcorn and movies and how he let Kennedy write most of the "no child left behind" law and other attempt he made to make nice with the "loyal opposition"? Where did it get him? Each incoming president has his own way of trying to make nice with the opposition in hopes it will get them on his side. It rarely works. Do you really think Obama met with those jounalists in order to have them change his mind or to change their minds. Soon...business as usual.

They loaded up on "sub-prime" mortgages to assure loans to people who didn't even have jobs, much less the ability to pay those mortgages. And then it's GWB's fault that they couldn't pay?

Bush
He made mistakes. He did a lot of things that I did not approve of-spending, illegal immigration acceptance, drug prescription added to an already grossly over-committed program, but he did not deserve the hatred that was directed at him. I believe he did what he thought was right without ulterior motives.
He hung in there when so many gave up on Iraq. To me he is not a hateable man. Those that hated him so revealed more about themselves than about him.
Donald W. Bales

Remember the song I can see clearly now
It's a bitter pill to swallow knowing that which you voted against and programs you don't agree with are the very tools which has kept this country safe from terrorist attacks. Obama begins here and not where President Bush had to start his Presidency. Great obstacles were removed by President Bush and our troops. Business as usual never would have been possible had President Bush listened to his critics and international opinion about fighting a war against terrorism. It's difficult to talk about hope and change if you lived in a country torn by car bombs, suicide bombers, and kidnappings in protest of the war in Iraq. Obama was able to talk about hope and change, a campaign slogan provided by President Bush and our troops. Obama knows not to make any drastic change which would endanger our troops abroad and open the doors to terrorist signaling that it's time to start thinking about attacking America again. There's a saying if it's not broke don't fix it. Obama would be wise not to listen to President Bush's critics and international opinion concerning the safety of this country. A seven year track record of not being attacked outweighs any criticism against the war on terrorism.

Don't go saying iraq is over as Petreaus says it is still very unstable. Bush the torturer had six years and he failed at this point

Not exactly Charles
As evidenced by some of the comments to this article, nothing can "vindicate" Bush for those afflicted with acute and terminal Bush Derangement Syndrome. They have their talking points, points carefully incubated over the last 8 years by the liberal propaganda center AKA the media.

This will be the evidence, however faulty, incomplete or just plain fabricated that will serve as the foundation for the continued pillory of both Bush and anything or anyone who has the "audacity" to say different.

Reality, like facts, are stubborn things however and both have a way of getting out. Liberals will be happy for the next 6 to 12 months as they frolic in their make believe world but that world is already in a heap of what comes out of the fan. And the fan hasn't even been turned on yet.

Politics of The Who
"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

Charles is the best
I have never failed to read one of Charles commentaries without being thoroughly fascinated for his on target, hit it on the head approach.

His ability to have such spectacular and clear perspective is what makes him one of the best.

Kudos Charles, this was spot on! As usual!

Panetta
Still scratching my head about that one. Perhaps Obama needs his skills as a master spin doctor, because I agree with Krauthammer, BHO will use all means to keep from having another terrorist attack on his watch. He is, after all, a politician first and foremost.
I had wondered history would ever vindicate Bush, given who controls media and academia. Bush truly is taking the hits, caring more about making this thing work than his legacy.
Bottom line, the Clintons and Obamas aren't fit to wash out this man's shorts. I think that's what ticks the loony left off most, because they know this too.
BTW, before you dismiss me as some mindless Bushie, I couldn't more disappointed with him domestically.

Media Driven
I don't think Bush would be nearly as unpopular without the media driven propaganda whose agenda was to inculcate idiots with their constant barrage of negativity and misinformation as well as suppression of all things negative to liberals.

This media propaganda used to be something for which we condemned dictatorships.

We cannot let....
these people rewrite history in any way. What people fail to reliaze is the fact that IT'S NOT ABOUT PRESIDENT BUSH, they are gloryfying these crude acts for future uses. They are propping up the messenger so that the message is not sullied, which is that the United States should dispense precieved "justice" and pretty much single-handedly decide right from wrong. It doesn't matter what happens to the local population, it doesn't matter that similar meddling has led to serious of atrocities committed by their respective dictators that these policies have been thrust upon. Above all they need to keep the Military Industrial Complex alive to swindle money from the Government, and to keep the power structure going. Again, this is not about Bush and never has been, it's always about this blood thirst for greed and power.

President Bush protected America
Not only was there not attacks in the United States, but niether was any other American country attacked by extremist which can not be said for Africa, Europe, Asia, nor Australia. Much as the liberals love to attack President Bush just look back to the years prior to him taking office. Both north and south america were regularly attached by extremist forces. The protector of the free world did his job.

The Days of Innocence are over
Charles hit in on the head. No matter what the media says, or the liberal machine, reality does not change. What is sad is that most people live in a bubble and are taken back when their eyes are open.
Congress and the ilk that is in Washington are so disconnected with reality they don't have the ability to see the truth, and can't respond with wisdom. God save this country!

What?
>I don't think Bush would be nearly as unpopular without the media driven propaganda whose agenda was to inculcate idiots with their constant barrage of negativity and misinformation as well as suppression of all things negative to liberals.<

You do realize that Townhall is the media? This columnist writes for the Washington Post. Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, Sinclair Broadcasting, Clear Channel, Wall Street Journal, Bonneville Communications(owned by the LDS Church), the 700 Club, atc are all the media.

It's completely dishonest to apply generic descriptions to the media when it's really just the media you don't like. You're guilty of propoganda.

Mistakes
Pres. Bush did what he thought was best for Our Country, he cannot be faulted for that. There were some bad decisions made during his administration, but i do not believe anymore than the the Clinton adm. There will be bad decisions made by the Obama adm.

Going into Iraq was not one of the mistakes made. I am a Desert Storm Vet and when i came home i knew we would be back. And yes there was WMD's...Saddam used them on the Kurds after we left Desert Storm...Just a reminder.

Now to make my point, The Democrats and Republicans all make mistakes, and both parties are responsible for the mess that we as a Country are in. PE Obama ran his campaign on the premise of change. How are we going to get change with so many of the Clinton cabinet being in Obama's? Change is not coming it will be business as usual in D.C. Tax Tax Tax...Spend spend spend spend spend.

If America TRULY wants change then America needs to wake up, get involved with the political process, and vote out everyone who is serving in the Senate and Congress. Republicans and Democrats have forgotten that it is the People that they serve and not special interests, lobbyists and corporate America. It is time to look at other options. That is why I am now a Libertarian...This is the only Party that will bring the changes that our country needs. IMHO

Patrick
"President Bush protected America"

Over three thousand Americans died under George Bush's 'Reign of Error' from foreign terrorists.

78 Americans died while Bill Clinton was President for eight years from foreign terrorists.

Kudos Mr. Krauthammer/Dan Nv.10:21
Mr. Krauthammer, your articles are always a pleasure to read. I wish that you could write one about your dinner with Barry.Yeah...,I know. It was "off the record".

Dan...,another great post! My thanks to you. You save me so much trouble.

Bush Hero to America
Australia, Asia, Africa, and Europe all continued to be attacked by extremist but not in the Americas because of the protection of President Bush. Democrats and liberals of both political parties prospered under his protection.

Obama wants expanded wiretapping? Duh!
Obama is often compared to Lincoln and like Lincoln he is a smug, scary statist. He must have loved the so-called crisis of the banking industry.

Why is anyone surprised he would keep Gates and Geithner? If something catastrophic happens in Iraq/Afghanistan...well, it was Bush's appointee's fault and I'll axe him in a press conference the same as Bush axed the Clinton-appointed head of the CIA, George Tenet not too long after 9-11. And if there is economic meltdown? It was Bush's Treasury, not Obama's.

Obama's real cabinet is the Democrat-controlled Senate and they are going to pass more welfare-related programs and institute more government control than any federal government in this country perhaps since FDR.

Who cares about who is running things in Iraq when his EPA blows away energy companies and they have to raise prices on us to compensate for massive controls forced on them?

Watch federal gas taxes go up, watch your own taxes go up, watch the people you work for have their taxes REALLY go up (and you will pay for it, trust me).

For RealCon
I don't agree that "Bush was lousy".

Bush was excellent in his primary duty, which was to "provide for a common defense."

Bush was also good on the economy. His tax cuts saved us from the Clinton recession and the economic effects of 9/11.

Bush correctly proposed faith-based charities and intelligent reform of Social Security.

Bush attempted many times to correct the irresponsible mortgage lending that has led to our current economic mess.

It was rampant entitlement spending, not the war, which caused record deficits. Increases in entitlement spending are THE LAW, enacted before Bush took office. Bush, if you will recall, was bashed by liberals in Congress and the media for reducing entitlement spending proposed by Congress in virtually every budget.

Bush was right to cut federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

Bush was not right all the time. Medicare Prescription Benefits are not only a boondoggle, they are diametrically opposed to SS reform.

Bush should have vetoed campaign finance reform.

He should have vetoed steel tariffs.

He should have enforced the law instead of trying to give illegals amnesty.

Overall Krauthammer is right. Bush will take the heat for Iraq, but in the end those who bashed him the most for Iraq, Gitmo, and FISA will end up claiming credit the successes these policies bring.

Pancho
You are right...the left wing media barrage far outweighs the right wing media. And if the leftist loons have their way about it, they will shut down the right wing media totally. Madame Pelosi has publicly stated that is on her agenda to reinstate the 'Fairness' Doctrine.

Charles Krauthammer
writes, "Indeed, Newsweek's neck-snapping cover declares, "Why Obama May Soon Find Virtue in Cheney's Vision of Power."

Neck snapping indeed. Somebody call me a chiropractor. I am suffering from political whiplash. Continuity we can believe in. Lol. Great column Charles.

As we all know, the vaunted liberal press would gladly repeal habeas corpus and any and all restrictions on government such as our right from illegal searches and seizures, a right to a jury trial, etc. etc. if "The One" determined it was necessary. All the same trolls that have spent the last six years decrying the loss of our liberty from wiretapping international calls to suspected terrorists and claiming the trampling of our rights will be out front and center defending worse if their annointed one desires it.

Obama is sounding more and more reasonable every day. Downright conservative. Where is the liberal outcry? Where is the groundswell demanding we give up all we have achieved in Iraq that we listened to for the last five years? He will still do much damage to this country in his attempts to pacify those radical leftists. I haven't heard him change his mind on jacking up our electric bills and crushing the economy to save the planet from carbon dioxide.

Charles
"Pres. Bush did what he thought was best for Our Country, he cannot be faulted for that."

Are you saying that spending like a drunken sailor is best for the country? Are you nuts???

It was six years of George Bush and Republican 'cut taxes and spend like drunken sailors' attitude that led to this debt bubble implosion.

Spending more than you have will surely lead to disaster.

It was George Bush and Republicans who spent more than the Democrats. They increased pork barrel spending from 3,000 to 14,000 projects a year, NOT PAID FOR.

They have engaged in a five and half year social engineering project in the Middle East that costs $120 billion a year and may well last another 100 years, NOT PAID FOR.

They have added another layer of entitlement spending that costs $50 billion a year called Medicare Prescription, NOT PAID FOR.

Mandated $4 billion a year in ethanol subsidies, as well as drastically increased cotton, sugar, soybean, corn, wheat handouts, NOT PAID FOR.

Doubled the size of the Department of Education, NOT PAID FOR.

How would you pay for all this spending? It took 210 years for the first $5 trillion and debt and only 7 years of Republican control to double it. It's nigh time for some fiscal Republicanism.

zapdoodat
So, under your philosophy of who should be blamed for the deaths of Americans on American soil by terrorists, I take it that, being the principled liberal I'm sure you consider yourself to be, come January 21, any deaths of Americans on American soil from the actions of terrorists from that day on until at least January 20, 2013, you'll just as resolutely hold Barack Obama wholly responsible for as you do George Bush for the deaths of the 9/11 victims?

RIGHT?!!

Maine defrost yourself
Was it not President Clinton who refused to apprehend or kill the terriorist in the first place after the first World Trade center attack back in 1993.? Is that the only attack you are considering try again. Not just in the United States but Bush presence stopped international attacks in Canada and Mexico. Clinton had no problem sending checks and repairing embassies and military bases.

wiseone, NOT!
George Bush exploded the cost of our government to $10,000 per person per year in the USA.

That's $3 trillion divided by 300 million Americans. George Bush and his Republican enablers, did jack-squat to diminish government. He presided over the largest increase in government since LBJ's 'Great Society.'

Additionally, the Republicans controlled the House from January, 1995 through January of just last year. The US Constitution gives Congress the 'power to tax and to spend.'

If you want to blame someone for the state of affairs in taxing and spending in today's government, have your favorite Republican, yourself, for example, look in the mirror.

Clinton is responsible for the decrease in agencies like the CIA to the point of being ineffective. Bush inherited an anemic safety system which is why 911 happened.

Do your homework. Read the book "See No Evil" by Robert Baer. "Approximately the first two-thirds of the memoir focus on the various experiences of Baer's two-decade (1976-1997) career at the CIA, while the last third depicts the growing cynicism brought on by the corruption and obliviousness encountered in Washington."

iraq is not a success
first there is this

Until now it was impossible to predict with confidence what the end of the war would look like in Iraq. But a clear picture could be emerging here in Mahmudiyah. The outcome is hardly what the occupation's supporters wanted, but it's too late for anyone to do much about that, under the deadlines set by the new U.S.-Iraqi security agreement. By the middle of this year, American combat forces must complete their official withdrawal from population centers. Security duties will be left to Iraqi forces, although U.S. military trainers and advisers will remain. As of Dec. 31, 2011, three years from now, all U.S. troops are to be out of the country. Meanwhile they still have their hands full in the northern city of Mosul, where insurgents and jihadists have dug in for another showdown, and Iraqis are bracing for more violence in the run-up to elections at the end of this month.

The situation is summed up in a phrase you hear among American combat troops and trainers: "Iraqi good enough." The term expresses their resignation—realism, they'd call it—about the limits of what America can accomplish in Iraq. They say it when an Iraqi Army unit has no choice but to buy fuel for its Humvees on the private market because Iraq's military-supply system is so corrupt and inefficient. Or when the persistent shortage of capable leaders forces Iraqi battalions to function with only half the number of officers they require. Or when Iraqi soldiers fall apart in a senior officer's absence because that's the way it goes in a top-down society. The concept has spread to American Embassy staffers, who invoke it when speaking of the near-impossible task of reforming the decrepit old welfare-state economy.

iraq is not a success
is this why we gave our blood and treasure

The prime minister of Iraq, America's staunch ally, Nuri al-Maliki, has called on all Arab and Muslim countries to "cancel their diplomatic relations and stop all contacts—public and private—with this murderous regime, which continues its painful aggression against peaceful, unarmed civilians." Iraq's most respected religious leader, Ayatollah Ali Sistani, praised by many American neoconservatives, issued a fatwa last week describing the Israeli attack as "vicious" and calling on all Arabs and Muslims to "take practical steps in order to stop this cruel aggression."

Hal
Irrespective of all your rhetoric, is it your stance then that freedom is not afforded every human being on this planet?

That those who have freedom then inherit a responsibility to support others toward such freedom?

That by supporting and liberating people they can then make their way in a world of free choice?

The Clinton Adm. had bin laden ready to be handed to us and he said no. BIG Mistake. Clinton shut down numerous Military bases BIG mistake. Bush kept the fight off of American soil by taking it to Afghanistan and Iraq. NO mistake. No attack on the USA after 9/11...Good Job!

I never said that i agreed with everything that His Adm. did. Lets face it He spent tax dollars like a Democrat. He grew the gov. like a democrat. He poured more money into failing programs like a democrat. I disagree with a lot of the Bush Adm. almost as much as the Clinton Adm.

My point was...Change will not come with the current two party system...It will take Libertarians, and as much as i do not agree with the Constitution party (imo they cannot separate church and state) them too.

There have been failed policies for the last 90 years starting with Hoover and FDR. It is pretty clear to me that the Rep. and Dem. have failed America.

It is time for a new way of running the Gov. and it starts with our votes in removing the Dem's and Rep's from office.

The "Hammer" hits the nail on the head!

Well written and true!

Same old crap from Zap
And so, the same old answers.

The amount of money spent since the 1960's on LBJ's "War on Poverty" is roughly equal to the total national debt.

Defense is mandated by the Constitution. Welfare is not.

The national debt inherited by Bush was more than twice the $3 trillion Zap claims he added to it, and the debt Bush inherited is ENTIRELY the responsibility of Democrats, who controlled Congress for 50 years prior to 1995. The only balanced budgets we've had in the last 60 years were insisted upon by Gingrich Republicans and achieved ENTIRELY by cutting military spending from 1995 thru 2000.

The first budget Bush approved was in the Fall of 2001, AFTER 9/11. Democrats controlled the Senate at that time and had been obstructing Bush's agenda ever since he took office. They would agree to increases in Defense spending but not with commensurate cuts in entitlements. That is how the die was cast for deficit spending under Bush.

Despite obstructionism from Senate Democrats, which continued in the form of "filibuster" even after the GOP regained control of the Senate in 2003, the Bush tax cuts increased revenue to the Treasury by more than the increases in Defense spending. But childish Democrats and their BDS supporters kept insisting on more, more, more, entitlement spending and the deficits that came with them.

The highest deficits under Bush came after the Dems regained control of Congress in 2007.

Liberal clowns like Zap really make me laugh. The Democrats haven't balanced a single budget in that last 50 years that they have run Congress, but when a GOP Prez presides over a deficit budget all we get are lectures from them about excessive spending.

What, besides the military, are you libs willing to cut in order to balance the budget?

Krauthammer
is right for once. Bush will be rehabilitated by the historical revisionists thoroughly and come out shinny and clean. I think we will miss a lot about Bush, his kind wife, and his sense of humor. And, if Palin is the republican future, we we miss his intelligence. And... what a graceful way he ended his farewell speech, with platitudes for Obama! He did have class.

.308 Win
And you can blame George Bush and his Reign of Error for their deaths.

Sycophants to the Republican party, like yourself, play politics with national security.

Ever hear of Clinton Administration defense cuts? It was the Republican-controlled Congress that made all those cuts that put this country in danger.

Stop playing politics with national security.

I "gived" to the garbage jockeys this morning along with crisp $10 bills to each of them.

They "axed" if I "be" from Ireland because I don't speak "like from around here". Not only did they offend my King's English learned in NOLA-area private schools, they kicked my French and Spanish to the curb.

And, two days ago, the nanny axed for money to "make groceries".

you say this

"Irrespective of all your rhetoric, is it your stance then that freedom is not afforded every human being on this planet?

That those who have freedom then inherit a responsibility to support others toward such freedom?

That by supporting and liberating people they can then make their way in a world of free choice?"

although i sympathize with the idealistic nature of the neo-cons of "project for a new american century", they were very ignorant of the culture.

bush sent karen hughes to the mid-east to meet with educated muslim women at a convention in jordan.
she tried to teach them the beneficial effects of democracy for women. they booed her.
as one participant said
1) if iraq is an example of democracy we don't want it.
2)we don't want a secular society we want a muslim society.

samuel hunnington, a political scientist specializing in studying foreign governance said this:

Huntington noticed a troubling trend. Sometimes, progress American style—more political participation or faster economic growth—actually created more problems than it solved. If a country had more people who were economically, politically and socially active and yet lacked effective political institutions, such as political p
