Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Oseola McCarty, a poorly educated African-American laundry woman in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, gave more to charity in one gift than our Vice-President has given in his lifetime. Last week's release of the Bidens' tax returns reveals a troubling character weakness. Stinginess. Unrelenting shameless stinginess.

During the campaign, both Biden and Obama released their tax returns dating back to 2000. As far as I know, my radio show was the only media outlet to discuss all the candidates' returns for what they reveal about character and spirit. Generous people are happier than stingy people, more compassionate than stingy people, and more selfless than stingy people. Generosity matters. It reveals who you are.

As April 15 arrived this year, Obama and Biden released their tax returns for 2008. Two observations: Biden is stingy, and Obama only began giving when he knew the public would be watching.

First, consider Oseola McCarty, who lived a simple life in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, doing other people's laundry to eke out a living. She lived in a small home with no cable television, only getting air conditioning in the final three years of her life. Her Bible was taped together to keep all the books intact. She saved and gave $150,000 at age 87 to help poor kids go to the local college, the University of Southern Mississippi, since she had only been able to finish the 6th grade herself. She said she figured the kids trying to get an education needed the money more than she did. Generous giving gave her life purpose and joy.

On the other hand, consider Vice-President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, who have given about 0.2% of their income to charity in each of the years between 2000 and 2008. Less than ½ of one percentage point given to persons in need, to ministries of their Catholic Church, to agencies that serve the poor and the hurting. In fact, this year they gave a total of $1885 to charity, marking the first time they had even given a sum larger than $1000 for the entire year. In every year of this decade, the Bidens' income has exceeded $200,000, and for the first time they gave away more than $1000 of their own money. Astonishing stinginess. Record-setting, in fact.

Their stinginess makes Barack and Michelle Obama appear generous. The Obamas gave away 6.5% of their considerable income ($2.6 MM) in 2008. They are showing progress. This percentage of giving (6.5%) marks their own personal best in the past decade. In fact, they gave less than 1% away in 2000, 2001, and 2002, only breaking into the paltry 1% category in 2003 and 2004, when he began to run for public office. Then, upon launching a bid for the presidency in 2005, their giving rose to 4.7%, and then 6.1% in 2006, and 5.8% in 2007.

So to the Obamas, here's a “Well done!” for continuing to increase their percentage given to charity; however, it is important to note that the Obamas now are only tied for last with President Reagan for the least generous presidents since 1969. Reagan and Obama are so far below the giving levels of Carter, Clinton, and both Bushes, that comparison is nearly impossible. The Reagans did grow forward in personal generosity in their second administration, so there is hope for the Obamas' growth in grace. People can and do change (although Biden appears reluctant to do so).

Sadly, one has to wonder why the Obamas' giving only began to reach any meaningful level once they began to run for public office. Was it because they knew it would now be scrutinized by the public eye?

Generous giving has changed my life. In fact, the happiest, most joyful people I encounter are also the most generous. There is a direct correlation. Stinginess makes miserable, critical people. Generosity breeds joy, selflessness, and grace. Jesus was right: Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Your heart follows your money. Not vice-versa. Be generous and your heart will grow outward; be selfish with your money, and your heart will become increasingly Grinch-esque.

Even more remarkable, your level of income has nothing to do with it, but the percentage of income given does. Oseola McCarty is no exception; she is the rule. Poorer people actually give a higher percentage of their incomes to charity than wealthy persons. AND persons who give higher percentages of their incomes, regardless of their wealth level, report higher levels of life happiness and satisfaction. My own experience, in my twenty years as a pastor, confirms these studies. Joyful people are generous people. Stingy people are critical and selfish.

I could not help but notice the contrast this week. We now have the stingiest presidential team in the past forty years while a new American record for generosity appears to be being set. Over the past month, nine American colleges and universities, including the University of Southern Mississippi, have received anonymous gifts totaling over $45MM. Purdue University received the largest ($8MM), while UNC-Asheville, Penn State-Harrisburg, Norfolk State, and others all received gifts of more than $1MM.Many of these gifts are the largest ever received by these schools. A record-setting occurrence of generosity.

Even more amazing each school has no idea who made the gift. And they were required to sign statements binding them never to investigate who had generously supported them and invested in their scholarship funding. The giver(s) want to remain completely anonymous.

The contrast could not be more clear. Our President gives only when he knows others will be watching. And our Vice-President does not give at all. Meanwhile, a generous American, perhaps an individual or a group or a foundation, gives in abundance with a great desire not to be known. The focus is on the gift and the good done.

Jesus would be proud, I think. “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Clearly, generosity is alive and well in America. For the evidence, one need only look to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, rather than to Washington, D.C.

Matter of Worldview
It's not just a matter of rich vs. poor. It's a matter of worldview. On the one hand, we have a Marxist administration. While they pay lip service to their respective churches, their religion doesn't seem to have impact on how they live their lives or inform their policy decisions.

A Marxist believes that it's the government's job to take care of everyone. When society is broken down into the have and have-nots, those who subscribe to Marxism will identify themselves as the have-nots and will never have enough no matter how much they acquire. It's why the Obamas could complain about what underdogs they were prior to the election, in spite of the fact that they're among the most wealthy, fortunately placed people in America. Marxism is an inherently ungrateful worldview.

A Judeo-Christian worldview on the other hand says that it's an individual's responsibility to care for the less fortunate. When a person believes that they've been blessed by God, they're less inclined to stinginess.

Cheapskates & thieves or liberals?
Well what a suprise! NOT. No wonder they want our money to "solve" the problems they created. They are so dishonest and cheap, they have no concept of what Christian generousity is. And, of course, the problem is they want to choose where our money goes. So really, the problem is they know we give to tons of good causes, ones they don't approve of and want to fund agendas with our money against our wills. Sorry. get the money to fund Planned Parenthood and all your other sick projects from YOUR rich friends who bought the election for you.

Generosity to colleges
giving money to colleges and universities is good? Professors are overpaid and underworked while stuffing young minds with liberal trash. Those who give money to these institutions - with a few exceptions, none listed above - are enablers of those who are doing their best to destroy this country.

And to whom did Obama give money?
One of his larger donations was to the Congressional Black Congress. I have never thought of a collection of congressmen as a worthy charity, but whatdo I know?

No tax receipts given
If you give money annonymously or to specific people in need you don't get a tax receipt for it and it isn't included in your tax returns. So it is quite possible that these politicians are giving more than we know. Or maybe it is what it is. But my point is we can't necessarily use tax returns to determine a person's generosity.

Yes, pastor, but...
the current leaders are incredibly generous with other people's money!

Cheap Democrats
It's a proven fact that conservatives are far more generous than liberals when it comes to charity. The only time Liberals are "generous" is when they are giving away someone else's money.

Lochman3 is exactly correct.
I'm no Democrat, and certainly no fan of VP Biden, but this column makes me uncomfortable. It's exactly as Hunt says:

"...But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

Maybe Biden gives to charity and simply doesn't report it on his taxes. Maybe he doesn't want to put his charitable giving on display. Maybe he doesn't feel comfortable taking a tax break on a charitable contribution.

Or, maybe he's stingy. My point is simply that I cannot see how Allen Hunt can know for certain one way or the other. Perhaps he should limit his comments about VP Biden's character to that which is truly demonstrable. A tax return proves nothing.

Amen
What has already been said about our not so generous, so called leaders is true. They take great pride in taking WORKING peoples money and giving it to people who buy houses they can't pay for,and have babies they can't support. There are not really giving them anything. They are only buying votes for the next election.

No more tax deduction for Charity ? ? ?
I contend that the reason bambam wants to eliminate the tax deduction for charity is so that he and his other liberals cohorts can go back to their stingy ways. They then can claim generous contributions and there will be no one to dispute them.

Leftist hypocrisy
I must admit a grudging respect for those wealthy (over $250K) people that voted for Obama; they knew their taxes were going waaaay up and voted for him anyway. They put their money where their mouth is.

Too bad people like this are in a minority in the Dem party. The Dems consist of poor people who voted for "the free stuff" and utterly hypocritical elites who rant against the "rich" and accuse others of greed....while doing everything possible to maximize the gelt in their pockets.

Maybe Mr Reagan was stingy?
And maybe he understood the importance of anonymity.

Much real giving is never used for tax avoidance -- and Mrs Reagan never claimed she'd gifted Mr Reagan's used underpants to charity.

Lochman3, good point
The scripture quoting Jesus speaks of us giving in private. However, we are also called to be good stewards of that which God has entrusted to our care. If I can take a tax deduction for charitable giving and I do not, I have less to do good with at my disposal.

Pesonally I'd rather see ALL deductions eliminated. I'm sick of the government manipulating people through the tax code. You earn X amount, times Y%, pay Z amount.

WRT to charitable giving, the way you steward your resources reveals that which you value. God new this. That's why there are far more references in scripture to money and possessions, over 2300, then there are on salvation. Give me a man's checkbook, and I can tell you what he values.

Charity overrated as moral barometer
Many unexamined false premises in this article. Our primary moral obligations are to abstain from violating others' rights, and to lead productive lives. Charity has its place in emergency situations, but can easily become negative if it enables destructive behavior.

Charity is also morally questionable if it is merely an efficient form of public relations spending (think most politicians, Princess Di, entertainment industry types, etc.). Some corpoations will make a $10,000 donation and then spend $10 million publicizing it.

Church donations have been funneled to leftist goups like the Worldwide Council of Churches and used to prop up dictatorships, spread leftist propaganda, and even purchase weapons for terrorists.

Executives at some of the biggest and most established charities (e.g., United Way) have used donations for luxurious vacations, cocaine, and prostitutes.

Moral 1: you can't buy virtue by writing a check.

Moral 2: if you want to give, give directly to someone who needs it, and don't hesitate to attach conditions if needed to make sure the funds are used in a positive manner.

Charity?
I recall Algore had very Biden-like giving habits also. Must be a Dem VP thing. Also during the election Hillary was proud of her and hubby Bill's 7 figure donation. The recipient?... Why the Clinton Foundation of course (so they can dish out the dough, such as paying the lady who manages the Clinton library over a half million a year)

Hypocrisy
This explains Obama's position on deductibility, and the Liberal taunt about how you can still give after taxes. There is only a few bucks of difference between Slow Joe giving his $1800 before or after taxes. For truly generous people who actually care about helping those less fortunate, such as Darth Cheney and his charming wife, it really does make a difference. One year (can't remember which) when the Bush admin released tax information, the Cheneys made about $5M and gave away around $3M. That's about 60%, or 10 times what the Obama's give when they know people are watching. Without deductibility, and at the Clinton-era rate of 40%, IRS would have skimmed $2M off the top, leaving only $3M for the Cheneys to pay their own bills and to give away.

When $1 is sent directly to a church or private charity, 80 to 95 cents go into the hands of someone who needs help. From each $1 appropriated for public assistance programs, maybe 25 or 30 cents gets to a recipient. Most is eaten up in bureaucratic overhead. Clearly, the poor are better off with full deductibility.

Give a little bit...give a lot
I am a firm believer that giving is good for your soul and your spirit. Give what you can and teach your kids to do the same.

bud
I too, was concerned about these gifts to universities. I think they meant well, but their money could have been better spent.

Anoynmous giving
To credit Mr. Biden with anonymous giving that he does not report for tax purposes seems noble, but it flies in the face of the fact that he kept receipts for $1885 of donations and chose to claim those. Why claim a very detailed $1885 if one is giving a lot more? Illogical.

I seem to remember a story
about a liberal who was confronted about lack of charitable giving. He said "I'm a liberal. Don't confuse that with being a Christian."

Mayb a quick of...
Dicken's "A Christmas Carol" would enlighten them to benefits of giving however I doubt it as they seem more inclined to take from us and spread our generosity to those that they deem fit to receive.

BTC, here's the point ...
If the Biden's don't believe in taking a tax deduction for their charitable contributions, fine, more power to them. The elephant in the room is the fact that they DID take a deduction for $1800. Why not the rest of their contributions? The only obvious conclusion is that there were none.

Charitable Giving
I am not a Biden-Obama supporter, but I do think that we should not be so vindictive toward them. Some people do not report any donations to charity, because they choose to remain anonymous--unknown givers. We do not know who the unknown givers are in the list in the article. Perhaps one is Biden or Obama. I had an aunt who gave to many charities, but she never claimed any of her donations on her income tax. She wanted to remain anonymous.

Leanna..
Good on you. Where I come from, real people dont put their stuff on the street and charity is such a thing. People in public life have no expectation of privacy, unlike the press. The press has the luxury of hiding behind personal liberties that public servants have given up. Maybe the conserv msm should hollar out against that lose of freedom!
Knowing that the public (and numerous high and mighty critics) was going to see my tax returns I wouldnt claim no where near the deductions I might qualify for because everyone knows what would happen. "Oh, he's thinks he's special, or "see, the rich can do that, we poor press writers cant" or " he's just showing off because its his wife's money".
Gag me with a spoon.

And where is the public outcry about a poor laundress who gives away over $2000 a year for every year of her working life? Where did that come from? Could be she is one of the ones who pay no income tax. Duh.
See how the emotional gamesmanship can work on you.
Bert, dont you have something better to do?

Show me my yours and Ill show you mine
You show mwe yours and ill show you mine. But unless youdo then shut upo about what you may or may not know anything about.

Leanna Are you Seriuos
Leanna implied that maybe President Obama and Vice President Biden give to charities anonymously. She also implied that the President or Vice President might be among the unknow giver or givers who recently gave gifts in excess of $45mm to various colleges. WAKE UP. Vice President "Slow Joe the Plaigarist" Biden would not give anything in secret. He wants the spotlight so much that he steals other peoples quotes and anecdotes and passes them off as his own. President Obama claims even the smallest accomplishment. There is no way either of these consumate politicians would pass up the smallest shot at glory or praise.

It is not vindictive to point out their lack of personal charity. Remember these are our elected leaders who told us it was our patriotic duty to pay MORE taxes. If its so patriotic, why do they give so little to charity of their own volition?

Wealth redistribution
I have never understood why burglary is against the law but voting Democrat isn’t.

You have Excuse Joe Biden
Bidens problem is he cant see where he is going or where hes been because its hard to give to charity with your foot in our mouth and your head up your rear, it must be painful.

SoCalEd
Obviously if the Bidens and the Obamas deducted their charitable contributions, they would pay fewer taxes. Those who pay fewer taxes are less patriotic. Therefore, they give HUGE donations but they don't take the deductions.

Of course, in Biden's case, his spokesperson said he and his wife give their valuable TIME rather than actual cash, so it's possible they don't actually give HUGE contributions, but if they did, they wouldn't deduct them from their tax returns as that would make them less patriotic.

The Obamas, on the other hand, don't have to prove their patriotism at all. They are actively giving away all the Other-People's-Money they can = patriotic. Besides, he has now said that he "loves" this country.

I'm not absolutely positive but I think The Poor are automatically exempted from the "more taxes, more patriotic" rule. Mostly the rule applies to The Rich.

giving and taking...
It is more blessed to receive. And the financial genuies on Wall st continue to make sure that they gets their 'entitlements'. After all, what self respecting grad of Penn, Harvard, Yale, Brown, etc could hold their head up at a squash court if people knew that they werent getting 4-10 million bonuses. Why not have these guys who are now on public incomes make their tax returns available to see what charitable hearts beat under the Brooks Bros suits.

biden
He could cut off his scalp and donate his hair plugs. I'll bet that was a pretty penny.

The old goat is a moronic self absorbed BOOB !!

And if that cow Michelle gave a fraction of what she spends on clothes just think how many people she could help.
