In a bold response to rising trade tensions under the Trump administration, Tesla has suspended orders for its American-made electric vehicles in China, signaling the high stakes of the ongoing economic standoff. The move comes as President Donald Trump doubles down on his America First trade agenda, pushing back against decades of one-sided deals that have favored Beijing. While the temporary halt may rattle markets, supporters say it’s necessary to protect American manufacturing and hold China accountable for its unfair trade practices.

On Friday, Tesla announced that it has stopped taking orders to import the US-made models Model S and Model X to China to persuade buyers to purchase the Shanghai-made Model Y and Model 3 manufactured out of its Gigafactory outside Shanghai. However, Tesla has not officially disclosed the reason behind the decision.

The shift comes after China hit back at Trump’s tough-on-China trade stance by hiking import tariffs on all U.S.-made products by a staggering 50 percentage points—bringing the total to 84 percent. The retaliatory move was intended to counter President Trump’s push to level the global trade playing field, but in the end, it’s Chinese consumers bearing the brunt of the consequences. Tesla's Model S now costs over 1.26 million yuan (about $172,260), while the Model X starts at 1.33 million yuan, thanks to Beijing’s steep tariffs on American innovation. China raised its tariffs on U.S. imports to 125 percent after Trump increased duties on Chinese goods to 145 percent.

Elon Musk recently endorsed a “zero-tariff situation” and a “free trade zone” between the U.S. and Europe.

“I hope it is agreed that both Europe and the United States should move, ideally, in my view, to a zero-tariff situation, effectively creating a free trade zone between Europe and North America," Musk said. “That's what I hope occurs, and also more freedom of people to move between Europe and North America if they wish, if they wish to work in Europe or wish to work in America, they should be allowed to do so, in my view. So that has certainly been my advice to the president.”
