Embattled Rep. Akin Stands Up Piers Morgan and CNN

After a convoluted series of events, embattled GOP Senate nominee Todd Akin stood up CNN host Piers Morgan in prime time tonight and set the stage for a fundraising drive that Akin hopes would keep him in the U.S. Senate race in Missouri. Outraged, Morgan called Akin a "gutless little twerp" before saying that the Congressman has an open invitation to appear on the show.

Both Piers Morgan and showrunner Jonathan Wald alerted the world that Akin would be appearing on CNN at 9pm to discuss his controversial comments regarding rape, pregnancy and abortion, and to discuss the widespread GOP calls for dismissing himself from the GOP nomination.

Shortly afterwards, however, Dana Loesch reached out to the Akin campaign and discovered that Rep. Akin was not to appear on CNN.

Which is how we ended up looking at Piers Morgan and an empty chair at 9pm.

Earlier today, the National Republican Senatorial Committee announced that they would not be spending money to support Akin, and GOP Super PAC American Crossroads followed suit. In a bid to raise some money after these abandonments, Akin launched a fundraising drive this evening, saying "I'm in this to the end" and "I've just begun to fight."

“The people from Missouri who elected me know I’m not perfect. They don’t make perfect people. We all make mistakes. When you make a mistake you to tell people you’re sorry, you don’t try and hide it. I made a mistake and I’m sorry,” Akin says in the email. “I have just begun to fight and I’m in this race to the end!”

Akin has until tomorrow evening to leave his race for the Senate seat from Missouri if the Republicans are to have any chance of replacing him on the ticket.
