Following Mitt Romney’s historic win in the Granite State, the former Massachusetts governor appeared on CNN’s Starting Point this morning to address Debbie Wasserman Schultz’ claim that his triumph in New Hampshire was, well, not really a victory. Let the spin begin:
The DNC chairwoman’s assertion that Mitt Romney is a “wounded candidate” because he failed to garner 40 percent of the vote yesterday is demonstrably false. Granted, Mitt Romney did launch his candidacy, buy a vacation home, and campaign assiduously in New Hampshire. Nevertheless, the election results from last night suggest that Mitt Romney is resonating with a plurality of Republican voters. He won over evangelicals, pro-life conservatives, and as Guy noted in his post earlier today, 40 percent of Granite Staters who support the Tea Party movement. Thus, when we look more closely at the data, Mitt Romney is actually galvanizing supporters from across the Republican spectrum.
And yet, for obvious reasons, DWS chose to disregard these salient facts. Romney, meanwhile, didn’t miss an opportunity to reiterate the president’s now-infamous shortcomings.
She’s got to stand up for the President’s record. And that is pretty bad. You’ve got almost two million people that have lost their jobs under this president. You’ve got median income that has dropped 10 percent over the last four years. You’ve got 24 million people out of work or stopped looking for work.
Though I personally think this election is far from over (Rick Santorum can still win South Carolina), the aforementioned video is rather encouraging. Most important of all, perhaps, it shows that Democrats are worried about Mitt Romney’s surging candidacy. And for what it’s worth, that is just fine by me.
