As Crime Soars, Here's What the DC City Council is Focused On

You're already aware that the DC city council has responded to a massive spike in carjackings by reducing criminal penalties for carjacking.  And that they've responded to struggling tourism rates by hiking hotel taxes, supposedly to 'boost tourism.'  And that they've responded to "democracy under attack" by permitting illegal immigrants and Russian and Chinese spies to vote in local elections.  Some local media outlets are laboring to justify the latter move:

It may not be a "new" idea, as other deep blue jurisdictions have moved to allow some foreign nationals to vote in local elections, which is a broadly unpopular idea in most of the country.  It is, however, a very bad idea that the council has leapt to adopt in the most radical and sweeping way imaginable.  I'd love to see a poll on how Americans feel about illegal immigrants and hostile nations' spies being allowed to vote in our nation's capital city.  Hostile nations such as Cuba, which seems to be occupying center stage in the DC city council's matrix of priorities these days:

The repressive Communist regime in Havana is undoubtedly thankful for this propagandistic activism, and I'm sure its "diplomats" in Washington will be sure to vote for supporters of this resolution.  They can do that now, after all.  Meanwhile, as the council carries water for foreign Commies, raises taxes, and enacts pro-crime "equity" policies that are so insane that even the leftists at the Washington Post and in the mayor's office are opposed, this just goes on and on:

These are just a handful of examples from the past two days alone, and I didn't even list all of them from this account, which tracks DC crime.  The city council has already voted overwhelmingly to reduce penalties for illegal gun possession and carjacking.  Might they...slash penalties for stabbings, too?  Why not, at this point?  "Equity" and "justice" require it, no?  By the way, do these sound like people eager to defund the police and coddle criminals?  Or do they sound like people desperate for law and order to be restored?

“Next thing I know, he walked up talking about, 'give me your keys, I got a gun.' I said, 'baby, you better shoot me, because you’re not taking my car.'” She declined to go on camera, but she's known in her 22nd Street Southeast neighborhood as "Grandma." She was on her way to chemotherapy Friday when a 15-year-old boy tried to carjack her, MPD said...Grandma said when she called for help, neighbors responded. "They all came out to help me," she said. He ran across the street and that’s when they caught him. "They caught him and I said, 'oh, you going to jail today. You definitely going to jail, yes you are," she said. Grandma showed 7News her scar from the teen snatching her keys. The police report said the would-be-carjacker left the scene in an ambulance, and Grandma said the teen is now in lockup. "And they said it’s a wonder he wasn’t dead," she said. "On 22nd Street? He must didn’t know where he was. Nobody has seen this boy before."

House Republicans have voted to overturn two of the council's most outrageous moves, but the mayor is lobbying Senate Democrats to allow the city to continue its self-governance without adult supervision (i.e. Congressional guidance), which has become increasingly disastrous.  The awful policies are being implemented. This is what Democrats want to make the 51st state. They know it's a terrible idea, but they support it because it would hand them two automatic US Senate seats. It's a raw power play. Such a scheme would be DOA in a GOP Senate, but the party blew winnable seats last year. Next year offers an historic opportunity to reverse that trend.
