Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden told MSNBC host Lawerence O'Donnell on Thursday that if he were a voter and believed Tara Reade's sexual assault allegation, he would not vote for himself.
Reade has come forward with a claim that Biden sexually assaulted her in 1993 while she was one of his staffers. In addition to calling for Biden to drop out of the race, she has said Biden must unseal the Senate documents he gave the University of Deleware to prove she had filed a complaint with his office.
"Well, I think they should vote their heart. If they believe Tara Reade, they probably shouldn’t vote for me. I wouldn’t vote for me if I believe Tara Reade," Biden said.
"Her story changes considerably, and so I don’t want to question her motive. I don’t want to question anything other than to say the truth matters. This is being vetted. It’s been vetted. They went and people interviewed scores of my employees over my whole career. This is just totally thoroughly completely out of character and the idea that in a public place in a hallway, I would assault a woman," he continued. "I mean, anyway, I promise you, it never happened. It should be vetted. She should be thoroughly looked at and whether or not these happened, look at the story. Follow the storyline and determine whether there is any truth to it, and there is no truth to it. I promise you."
While Reade admits the complaint she filed with his office does not mention the alleged incident, she reportedly told her brother, Collin Moulton, about the alleged assault. Court documents from 1996 show she told her ex-husband about the allegations. In addition, Lynda LaCasse, Reade's former neighbor said she had conversations with Reade about it.
