A World War II veteran and recipient of two purple hearts has just won another tough battle: defeating the Wuhan coronavirus at 99 years-of-age. Max DeWeese of Kansas City was discharged from Ignite Medical Resorts in Kansas City on Thursday.
"99-years-old and didn’t succumb to the virus. Oh, I was sick — there was no question about that," Deweese said, according to WSLS-TV. "I’ve gone through hell more than once and this came almost as close."
Members of the community, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and medical professionals were in attendance when DeWeese left the medical facility. Following his discharge, the marine was awarded a couple of medals commemorating his latest victory over the Wuhan coronavirus.
"Expected maybe a friend or two, but to have all this and to get these, I don’t know how to describe it," Deweese said, according to KSHB-41.

"I’ve gone through four engagements in the Pacific World War Two and that was hell,” Deweese said, according to Fox 4. "This wasn’t near as bad because at my age, I figured out what’s going to happen is going to happen and all ride with it. So and I’ve ridden it and thank goodness the good Lord has seen fit to keep me around for a little while longer."
The veteran initially went to St. Luke's South Hospital in Lee's Summit, Kansas, after developing symptoms. He was later admitted to Ignite Medical Resorts in Kansas City on April 15.
Deweese will spend the next two weeks under home quarantine.
