Playing politics with American jobs.
President Trump campaigned on renegotiating NAFTA with terms more favorable for American workers. After striking such a deal, the United States—Mexico—Canada Trade Agreement, House Democrats denied Trump the political victory by waiting more than a year to approve the trade deal.
But Speaker Pelosi only waited a full hour after revealing articles of impeachment to announce that she had finally reached a deal with the president -- yes, the one she's trying to impeach -- to finally move forward with a vote on USMCA. The timing is very calculated by the Speaker, burying a political win for the president under a mountain of impeachment news this week.
Pelosi did admit that the trade agreement is important for American workers, and she's right. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said he expects the agreement could create as many as 589,000 new jobs over the next five years.
But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell threw a wrench in the Democrats' plans to deny Trump his political win over USMCA by announcing he would wait until after the president's impeachment trial was finished in the Senate before moving forward on USMCA.
