Pelosi Suggests That Yes, a Sitting President Can Be Indicted

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is expected to be re-elected speaker of the House Thursday as Democrats take over the lower chamber. She left nothing to the imagination as to what will be on her agenda when she sat down to speak with "TODAY's" Savannah Guthrie. The Democrats are going for President Trump's jugular via Robert Mueller's Russia investigation.

While Department of Justice guidelines state that a sitting president cannot be indicted, Pelosi isn't so sure.

"Do you believe the special counsel should honor and observe the Department of Justice guidance that states a sitting president cannot be indicted?" Guthrie asked.

“I do not think that that is conclusive," Pelosi answered. "No, I do not.”

Guthrie continued to challenge Pelosi on the notion, again citing DOJ rules. The representative said it was an "open discussion."

Pelosi's tone is a far cry from where she was last year, when she rejected fellow Democrats' calls to remove Trump from office. It "wasn't even a priority" for her.

Trump rejects the Mueller investigation as a "witch hunt," which has so far provided no conclusive evidence that his campaign colluded with Russia in the 2016 election. It has, however, landed a few of Trump's former associates in jail for other crimes, like lying to the FBI.

Still, Democrats have taken advantage of the Russia probe in hopes it will be Trump's undoing. They've also done away with subtlety in signaling their plans to investigate Trump's tax returns. The House Ways and Means committee plans to formally request Trump’s tax returns, and Pelosi, they said, is "in" on it.

Let the 116th Congress begin.
