It's no secret that college is expensive, and many American college students will apply for loans and grants using FAFSA, or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. @FAFSA, the official Twitter account for the Federal Student Aid office of the U.S. Department of Education, tweeted an odd and somewhat insulting Tweet last night to its nearly 65k followers:
The "Help me. I'm poor." text is a reference to the movie Bridesmaids, when a drugged-out character portrayed by Kristen Wiig demanded a seat in the first class cabin of an airplane.
The tweet was deleted less than 12 hours after it was sent.
While this was certainly a valiant effort to be relevant and/or funny to today's college-bound 17 through 22 year old students, it's a little odd for an official Twitter account for a federal program to be tweeting stills from movies. Furthermore, there's a big difference between actual poverty and being unable to afford a college education--never mind the fact that the Department of Education's subsidies are a large reason as to why higher education is so expensive in the first place.
Higher education is a bubble, and thanks to the DOE's policies and loans inflating tuition costs, that bubble is going to burst.
