Mets Fans Are Enjoying Every Minute of the 'Summer of Grimace'

Yesterday's game got a little soggy, but the New York Mets swept the New York Yankees in the subway series when it resumed. The Yankees are in a bit of a slump, but they're still one of the best teams in baseball this year. They're likely going to win the division. Remember, this is a 162-game season. Meanwhile, the Mets are now .500 for the first time in 50 days, but you'd think this crew was some unstoppable force destined to be in the World Series this season. That's unlikely, but one figure has been giving Mr. Met a run for his money concerning who the actual mascot is this year.

I watch baseball, but it's not my go-to sport for viewing. I'm a football and hockey guy, but when I watch the MLB, I'm a Mets fan. Don't ask me why; I don't know. The 2024 season looked like it would spiral into a total disaster for the club until it was saved by someone from McDonaldland: Grimace.

On June 12, celebrating his birthday, Grimace threw the ceremonial opening pitch. It turned out to be what saved the Mets' season. The team went on a seven-game win streak and hasn't lost a series since. It's been a source of hilarious memes and social media commentary about the power of Grimace, who is also apparently a gay icon. Who cares—the "gay Mets" are coming to wreck everyone's day until they're not.

Grimace is what Tommy DeVito was to New York Giants fans who were in the throes of a dismal season last year. It's a chance for fans to have a lot of fun, and they are:

It's the Summer of Grimace at Citi Field. Even the Empire State Building and McDonald's proper have joined the fun.
