A U.S. service member was killed in Somalia Thursday during an operation against al-Shabaab.
The operation was an advise and assist mission with the Somali National Army that took place near Mogadishu, according to U.S. Africa Command.
“Al-Shabaab presents a threat to Americans and American interests. Al Shabaab’s affiliate, al-Qaeda, has murdered Americans; radicalizes and recruits terrorists and gathers in the United States; and attempts to conduct and inspire attacks against Americans, our allies and our interests around the world, including here at home,” a statement reads.
U.S. forces will continue supporting their Somali counterparts and regional partners to dismantle the threat al-Shabaab poses in the country and beyond, the statement added.
