Every once in a while "that book" comes along which so simply defines and then arms us with the knowledge to combat a problem in society--and that book is D.A. Carson's latest, "The Intolerance of Tolerance." This video provides me with the opportunity to encourage all of you to read it. Carson provides the clarity of a Sowell read but does it in under 200 pages! Here's a snipit from the book's description:
Carson traces the subtle but enormous shift in the way we have come to understand tolerance over recent years -- from defending the rights of those who hold different beliefs to affirming all beliefs as equally valid and correct. He looks back at the history of this shift and discusses its implications for culture today, especially its bearing on democracy, discussions about good and evil, and Christian truth claims.
Using real-life examples that will sometimes arouse laughter and sometimes make the blood boil, Carson argues not only that the "new tolerance" is socially dangerous and intellectually debilitating but also that it actually leads to genuine intolerance of all who struggle to hold fast to their beliefs.
Pastor Mark Driscoll defines the problem with modern-day "tolerance" perfectly: "Sadly, the debate about Christianity has shifted from 'is it true' to 'was anyone offended.'"
In this clip we see that those who do not embrace, support, and endorse a homosexul lifestyle are automatically considered "intolerant" and must stop embracing Biblical "bigotry." Homosexuals and their lifestyle-supporters do not even consider the notion that they should tolerate the views of those who do not agree with their lifestyle. That's never an option!
The segment begins with MSNBC host saying LGBT and women's rights are "under attack"--standard objectivity from MSNBC. Homosexual Rev. Troy Perry (He speaks of his "partner") of the Metropolitan Community Church, and Pastor Jay Bakker of Revolution Church (son of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker) are the guests. Bakker makes these two whopper comments during the interview: "Religion is not an excuse to be a bigot." and "'Homosexuality' was not originally in the Bible." Really?! I would love for Bakker to exegete that one! BTW: Bakker just received the 1st "Straight For Equality" award from Rev. Perry.
Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of "The Intolerance of Tolerance."
