Steve Scalise Upgraded to 'Fair' Condition; Undergoes Another Surgery

Nearly a month after he was shot and wounded at baseball practice in Alexandria, VA, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) remains hospitalized at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. On Thursday, he was upgraded from "serious" condition to "fair" condition. Additionally, Scalise successfully underwent a surgery on Thursday for "the management of deep tissue infection related to his bullet wounds."

Scalise is the only person injured in last month's shooting who remains in the hospital. He suffered injuries to his internal organs and bones after being shot in the hip, and arrived at the hospital in shock. Since the shooting, he has undergone multiple surgeries and returned to the intensive care unit for a week after coming down with an infection.

The shooter, James T. Hodgkinson, specifically targeted the Republican Congressional Baseball Team and had a list of Republican members of Congress on him at the time of the attack. Hodgkinson was killed at the scene by a member of Scalise's security detail after opening fire at the baseball field. Hodgkinson was a former volunteer for Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I-VT) presidential campaign and reportedly went on a long-winded rant against Republicans on the eve of the ambush. After the shooting, members of Congress rallied together at the Congressional Baseball Game in a bipartisan show of support for Scalise.
