Lena Dunham Expresses Regret She's Never Had An Abortion

So much for "safe, legal, and rare." Speaking on her podcast, actress Lena Dunham expressed regret that she's never had an abortion, saying that she was concerned that there still remains a stigma on the procedure. She also discussed how, from a young age, she and her sister were raised to believe that abortion is a societal good.

Dunham described an encounter she had at a Planned Parenthood in Texas, where she was asked to participate in a project about women sharing their stories about how they have had abortions. She said she realized then that she was carrying a "stigma" about abortion as she felt as though she had to inform someone that she was "unblemished" and had never actually had one.

(Emphasis mine)

“And I realized then that even I was carrying within myself stigma around this issue,” Dunham continued. “Even I, the woman who cares as much as anybody about a woman’s right to choose, felt it was important that people know I was unblemished in this department.”

Dunham said that many of her loved ones have “had to have abortions for all kinds of reasons.”

“I feel so proud of them for their bravery, for their self-knowledge, and it was a really important moment for me then to realize I had internalized some of what society was throwing at us and I had to put it in the garbage,” she said. “Now I can say that I still haven’t had an abortion, but I wish I had.”

First, this is just absurd and comes off as a desperate plea for attention, which, sadly enough, I am now giving to her.

Second, if you've never had something happen to you, there is nothing wrong with saying that you've never had that experience. It would be inappropriate for someone who has never done something to partake in a project centered around sharing those experiences, regardless of what the issue is. This doesn't mean there's a "stigma" surrounding that issue. Everyone has different life experiences.

Third, I feel as though the women of Silent No More would have some issues with Dunham's sick desire to have an abortion.

Outrage over Dunham's comments propelled her to the number two trending topic on Twitter in the United States on Tuesday.
