Government Unions the REAL Big Spenders

Remember President Obama's rant about the Chamber of Commerce's participation in the midterm elections?

Or his denunciation of Karl Rove and Ed Gillespie for trying to "influence our elections

"?

Perhaps the President would care to comment on this story running today in the Wall Street Journal, which reveals that the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees is now the biggest outside spender of the 2010 elections.  How 'bout it, Mr. President: Are the government employee unions a threat to democracy, too?

The Journal piece notes that "[t]he 2010 election could be pivotal for public-sector unions." You got that right -- let's hope that a more conservative Congress makes them stop bleeding taxpayers dry.

Oh, and just for the final indignity:  The Journal article reveals that we, as taxpayers, are essentially funding the government worker unions. That's right: Member salaries (and thus, the union dues that government workers are required to pay) come directly from state budgets.

It's a great country -- for the unions -- when you can collect taxpayer money to support political activity in direct opposition to what most taxpayers want, isn't it?
