Pelosi Calls GOP Immigration Proposal a 'Compromise With the Devil'

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) slammed the idea of working with Republicans on compromise bills aimed at fixing the immigration crisis Thursday. She employed her typically hyperbolic rhetoric calling their legislation “a compromise with the devil.”

"It's not a compromise.” Pelosi told reporters of the GOP’s proposals, “it may be a compromise with the devil, but it's not a compromise with the Democrats in terms of what they have in their bill."

Republicans will be considering two immigration bills, a conservative bill from Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) and a more moderate proposal arranged by House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) which would offer DACA recipients a pathway to citizenship.

“Their bills are anti-family, perpetuate child detention, end existing protections, cut off many people who have been waiting lawfully to enter the country,” she added.

Pelosi also slammed President Trump’s immigration policies after he tweeted that open borders were her “dream.” She claimed Democrats know the importance of border security, but believe it can be achieved without Trump’s policies.

"He thinks that the way you protect the border is to put children in cages," she told reporters. "The president is either not knowing, not caring, delusional, in denial about his own policies being outside the circle of civilized human behavior."

However, she went on in the press briefing to call building a wall on the border “ineffective, inexpensive, immoral,” saying “what’s better to do is to build a bridge.”
