Sen. Sasse Calls Out Perez’s ‘Bizarre’ Abortion Stance: No Room for Those Who Believe ‘A Baby in a Mom’s Tummy is a Baby’

Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) spoke Wednesday to Students for Life of America (SFLA) during a rally in which they delivered nearly 200,000 baby socks to the Capitol representing babies killed by Planned Parenthood and encouraging Congress to defund the abortion organization.

Sasse brought up Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Tom Perez’s recent demand that all Democratic candidates support abortion, calling that stance “bizarre.”

“He said that the Democratic party has to be a party that doesn’t have any room for people who believe that a baby in a mom’s tummy is a baby,” Sasse said. “That is bizarre.”

“I care about a whole bunch of things far more than I care about the Republican party or the Democratic party,” Sasse emphasized, “and one of the fundamental ones should be that America exists to fight for the most vulnerable, that shouldn’t be a Republican or Democratic proposition, that should be an American proposition and that should be a human proposition."

Sasse mentioned a tweet he sent to the DNC Chair pointing out “Your profile says you fight for the little guy. Please check out this little fella -- special, isn't he? (He's 12 weeks old.)” The tweet included a picture of a 12-week-old unborn child.

The senator said some of the response he got on social media was “a whole bunch of people accusing me of propaganda” which was “strange since the picture I tweeted out is just science. It’s a picture of what’s actually happening inside a mom’s womb.”

“That kind of picture needs to be the thing that we’re about,” he emphasized, “the first thing we’re trying to do is trying to persuade our brothers and sisters to look at the gift of life and look at the glory of what’s actually happening in a womb and the truth about the fact that that baby has dignity.”

He also praised SFLA’s idea of bringing baby socks to Congress saying “this picture you’re trying to create today is another special way to tell the story of what we’re about.”

The group hopes to eventually collect 323,999 baby socks to represent the number of babies killed by Planned Parenthood last year.

Sasse called that a “devastatingly large number” but added that “we need to have an image like this so that people start to reflect on the magnitude of the suffering that’s happening out there.”
