GOP Elites, Stop Biting Our Hands That Feed You

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

If the GOP establishment wants to win in 2016, they should stop biting our hands as we spoon food into its mouth—or prepare to starve.

Last week’s budget deal, which raises our debt ceiling by $1 trillion and increases federal spending by nearly $80 billion over two years, was quietly passed by the Republican-controlled Congress. Also last week, the Republican National Committee (RNC) endorsed one of America’s biggest spending architects to replace John Boehner as House Speaker: Rep. Paul Ryan.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus supported Ryan despite the fact that, in 2013, Ryan reached so far across the aisle that he tumbled to the other side. Ryan essentially became a Democrat, partnering with Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) to override spending limits set by sequestration.  As Sen. Rand Paul says: “Paul Ryan was instrumental in getting rid of the sequester. "

Obama loves Paul Ryan, because—unlike a Ted Cruz or a Rand Paul—he is as malleable as soft clay. “There's no doubt that Ryan was the White House's favored choice for speaker after John Boehner resigned,” reports the New York Times.

GOP Elites Give Obama Everything He Wants, Ignore Us

Ryan has been praised as a “pretty sincere guy” by… none other than President Barack Obama, the man who told us: "If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan." A few more remarkable facts about Ryan:

  1. Many years ago, according to Rush Limbaugh, Ryan interned under Boehner. And we thought we were getting rid of Boehner! We elected Junior.
  2. The New York Times has a story out describing how excited the president is over Ryan’s nomination: “Obama has long admired Ryan's seriousness on fiscal issues” and how White House aides “point to” Ryan’s “willingness to reach across the aisle” and partner with the Democrats.
  3. Specifically, the White House is ecstatic over Ryan’s willingness to capitulate on spending and trade—partnering with Sen. Murray to override the sequester and promoting Obama’s Trans Pacific Partnership trade pact. Breitbart.com proved this trade deal gives the president a means to ignore Congress and constitutional separation of powers while The New American exposed Russia’s “backdoor participation.” Sounds like a sweet deal!

“Democrats like what they hear from Ryan,” was last week’s big headline on TheHill.com. “Democrats say they're buoyed by Ryan's debut speech calling for more comity and cooperation, hoping the power shift will … grease the skids for future legislative successes,” cooed The Hill.

Gee, I wonder why? Could it be because Speaker Ryan will be Speaker Boehner 2.0?

Priebus loudly endorsed Ryan before the vote that made Ryan King of the House. “Paul Ryan is the right person, at the right time to lead the House of Representatives during this critical period in our country’s history. Paul is also a conservative leader.” Nope. He’s the Democrats’ best friend. Nice try, Reince.

Either Ryan is a big spender who no longer identifies as a Republican or he is afraid of being blamed for shutting the government down. Ryan should know better. Even you and I know that government shutdowns win elections for Republicans.

Priebus, a figurehead for the GOP establishment, wisely deflected attention from his hand in promoting Ryan to replace Speaker Boehner. Last week, Priebus made a big show of pillorying CNBC for the “crap sandwich” the network delivered in its treatment of GOP candidates during the October 28 presidential debate.

If Priebus truly were “pissed off” that CNBC implied Donald Trump is running a “comic-book version of a presidential campaign,” he wouldn’t have reportedly asked Trump to “tone it down” on immigration earlier this summer. Priebus and his establishment friends also would not be working on a secret plan to adjust their national convention rules and expel Trump, Carson and Cruz.

Stop Reaching Across—and Falling Over—the Aisle

“Reaching across the aisle” is not a virtue on par with faith, hope and charity when Republicans reach so far that they fall over, effectively becoming Democrats. Stop it.

We lose elections when we take tips from Democrats and bulldoze our grassroots superstars like Donald Trump, Dr. Ben Carson, Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Rand Paul in favor of moderates like John McCain; Mitt Romney; John Boehner and now Paul Ryan. We will win elections when we do the right thing and close part of the government for a few days in order to uphold fiscal morality; human life; and the integrity of our borders.

Dear GOP Establishment: We’re fed up. We’ve fed you with our money; our volunteer hours; and our votes. Our hands are mangled and bloody from your cruel bites. We’re walking away and leaving you to feed yourself if you don’t start listening to us.
