A tense moment during the opening moments of Fox News’ Republican presidential debate Thursday night involved Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) and anchor Bill Hemmer. Santorum, frustrated by the tone of the moderator’s question about his long shot status in the 2016 race, used the opportunity to condemn the general election media for dismissing him and his fellow candidates who have not made the main debate stage.
There’s “no conversation” about the four people on stage, he said. Instead, they have been referred to by the media as the “undercard” candidates. What’s more, the senator frustratingly noted how the media spent most of their airtime ahead of Thursday's debate discussing whether or not the “entertainer” candidate Donald Trump would show up, rather than the remaining candidates or substantive issues at hand.
“This is what the media has been doing in the past year in trying to segregate and take Iowans out of the process,” he said. “What Iowans deserve is to hear from every candidate on equal footing."
The senator also complained about being reported as having zero percent in election polls, particularly in a Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey.
That, Santorum explained, was because they “never include his name on the list.”
