Arizona State Senator Switches to Republican Party

A State Senator in Arizona has announced that he is switching parties.

Carlyle Begay announced yesterday that he is leaving the Democratic Party in favor of becoming a Republican. Begay said that the Republican party better reflects the values of self-determination and self-empowerment that he holds and wants to emphasize in his district.

Begay is part of the Navajo tribe and represents Arizona’s 7th District and also represents the tribal communities that are consumed with rampant unemployment and poverty.

Begay was appointed to the Arizona State Senate in 2013 and was reelected in 2014.
